.IMPROVEMENT IN HAND-STAMPS.
4 Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,114, dated August 5, 1862.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD SPENCER, of the city and county of St. Louis, and-State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Stamps; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a side elevation of my said irnproved stamp, and Fig. 2 is a top view thereof with the upper part, A, removed.
I make my stamp in the form of a pair of I squeezers hinged at the end, in the manner shown by the drawings. One part of said squeezers (which I shall call the lower part I make much thicker than the other and hollow it out, so as to fit it to receive a die, B, of any desired shape or configuration, and two rollers, D D, arranged one on each side of the said die. Upon said rollers I wind a ribbon, h, saturated with printers7 ink, and stretch it over the face of the die, in the manner shown in Eig. 1. Under the bottom of the die I arrange a yielding bottom, so that the face of the die can adjust itself to the face of 'the platen I A. In the front end of thelower partI arrange purposes; but it is chieily intended for the use of railway-conductors.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the dieB, the rollers C,
and ribbon h with a pair of squeezers made substantially in the manner shown and described.
