H. HATGHMAN.
STOVE GRATIS No. 360,690. Patented Apr. 5,1887.
% INVENTOR:
WITNESSES:
ATTORNEYE UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE HATOHMAN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
STOVE- T0 (oZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE I'IATCHMAN, of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in StoveGrat-es, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in.which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the frame of my improved stove-grate, showing one of the grate-sections in position. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a sectional front grate for cooking and heating stoves and ranges, having a frame for supporting the grate-sections, and provided with sections which may be readily applied to or re moved from the frame.
My invention consists in an oblong frame in form and size'adapted to the stove or range to which my improvement is applied, and in series of grate sections or fingers supported at their lower ends by hooks on a crossbar of the frame, and at their upper ends by arms projecting from the upper bar of the frame.
The frame A consists of bars 13 0, connected at their ends by the angled plates D, the bar B being provided with arms a, which project inwardly from the bar and downwardly at their extremities, as shown in Fig. 1.
The grate-sections E, which are adapted to the frame A, consist of one or more fingers, I), cast integrally with the plate 0, and arranged at an angle with the plate which corresponds to the angle of the end plates, D, of the frame A. The back of each finger bis provided with a hook, (I, which is capable of receiving be tween it and the body of the finger the bar 0 of the frame A. The free end of the plate a is provided with a rib, c, on its upper surface, forming a recess, f, in the middle of the plate, for receiving the downwardly-projecting end of one of the arms a. lVhen the frame Aand the grate-sections E are in place in the stove,
GRATE.
s Patent No. 360,690,'dated April 5, 1887.
Serial No. 201,191. (No model.)
the free edge of the plate 0 rests on rib-shoulders or stops cast with the side of the stove, so that the upper end of the grate-section is held between the downwardly-projecting ends of the arms a and the side of the stove.
heating-stoves, several frames A being employed in the different sides of the stove and arranged as shown in Fig. 2. The grate, being made in sections, is less liable to warp by overheating than a grate made entirely in one piece. It also permits of removing injured portions and replacing them with new. The frame A, being removed from the hottest portion of the fire, retains its form and does not require renewal.
It is obvious that my improved front grate is applicable to heating-stoves as well as cooking stoves and ranges, and when applied to heating-stoves showing the fire all around the grate will necessarily be applied to all sides of the fire-pot.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a front stove-grate, the combination of the frame A, formed of the bar 13, provided with the arms a, the bar O, the angle-plates D, connecting the bars B O, and the grate-sections E, provided with hooks d, and having recesses f, for receiving the arms a, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a front stove-grate formed of the frame A, having bars B 0, connected by angle-plates D, the arms a, projecting from the bar B, the grate-sections E, formed of the fingers b, and plate 0, cast integrally therewith, the fingers I) being provided with hooks d, and the plate 0 having a recess, f, substantially as herein shown and described.
