Cl. 123195A 3 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Accessory units for an internal combustion engine are mounted on a housing adapted to be detachably secured to the engine, the housing carrying a single drive shaft for the ignition distributor, an oil pump and a fuel pump, and the distributor and oil pump and a fuel pump actuator cam being arranged coaxially of the drive shaft which is adapted to be driven by a drive chain belt which drives the engine cam shaft.
This invention relates to internal combustion engine accessory units such as fuel pumps, ignition distributors and oil pumps, and their attachment to, and drive by, an internal combustion engine.
According to this invention an engine accessory units assembly comprises a housing adapted to be detachably secured to a seat on the engine, an accessory units drive shaft which has fixed thereon a toothed pulley adapted to be driven by an engine drive chain belt, or a toothed belt, and a plurality of engine accessory units including a fuel pump, :an ignition distributor and an oil pump, mounted on said housing, said ignition distributor and oil pump and a fuel pump actuator cam being arranged coaxially of said drive shaft for drive thereby. The accessory units drive shaft is preferably a horizontal shaft mounted parallel to the engine cam shaft, the drive belt driving both the cam shaft and the toothed pulley on said drive shaft.
The ignition distributor is mounted horizontally instead of in the customary vertical position; and the housing preferably also carries a mount face for an oil filter, conveniently in the form of a discardable sheet metal casing containing an oil filter element, the housing being provided with passageswhich communicate with the inlet and outlet ports of the filter element and with inlet and outlet ports of the engine lubrication system. The housing preferably also includes an oil pressure valve and an oil filter by-pass valve.
The scope of the invention is defined by the appended claims; and the invention and the method by which it is to be performed are hereinafter particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a vertical section through an accessory units assembly according to the invention, as seen on the line I-I of FIG. 2.
FIG. 2 is an end elevation of FIG. 1, as viewed on the line IIII thereof; and
FIG. 3 is a view on the line IIIIII of FIG. 2, the fuel pump, oil filter and toothed pulley being omitted therefrom for the sake of simplicity.
The engine accessory units assembly shown in the drawings comprises a housing 1 formed with a seat face 2 with apertures 3 therein by which the housing 1 is adapted to be bolted on to a seat on an internal combustion engine. The housing 1 has journalled therein in bearings 4 a horizontal drive shaft 5 on one end of which is secured a toothed pulley 6 around which extends a toothed drive belt 7 which also extends around a toothed pulley (not shown) secured on the engine camshaft (not 3,606,874 Patented Sept. 21, 1971 shown). Mounted on the end of the housing opposite the toothed pulley 6 is a horizontally mounted ignition distributor 8 having a drive shaft 9 which is coaxial with the shaft 5 and has at its end a tongue 10 which engages in known manner in a slotted end portion 11 of the drive shaft 5 to provide a drive connected therewith.
The customary centrifugal advance and retard mechanism of the distributor 8, indicated at 8a, is conveniently housed as shown, in a recessed end portion 13 of the housing 1. Also mounted on the drive shaft 5 adjacent the end portion 11 thereof is the internal rotor of an oil pump of the internally meshing lobed gear type the outer rotor 14 of which is journalled in a recessed portion 15 of the housing 1 which constitutes the pump chamber, the latter being closed by a cover plate 16 secured thereover. The cover plate 16 and the recessed portion 15 of the oil pump are formed with similar arcuate recesses 17, 18 respectively which act to equalize the pressure on opposite sides of the rotors. The pump chamber 15 has inlet and outlet ports (not shown) which communicate with an inlet passage 19 and an outlet passage 20 which opens at the mount face 2 and are adapted to be placed in communication with corresponding passages of the engine oil lubrication system when the mount face 2 is secured to the seat on the engine.
Instead of the oil pump described a gear pump could be used, one of the two meshing pump gears being mounted coaxially on the shaft 5.
The housing 1 is also formed with an internal cavity 21 to accommodate a rotary drive cam 22 for a fuel pump 23 which is bolted on to a mount face 24 therefor on the housing 1. The fuel pump 23 is operable by a rocker arm 25 the inner end of which extends through an opening 26 in the mount face 24 and engages the cam 22. The cam 22 is secured on the shaft 5 by a drive pin 27.
The housing 1 is also formed with a seat face 30 for an oil filter 31 which is preferably of the kind in which a filter element is enclosed in a discardable sheet metal canister having a central threaded socket. The filter 31 is secured to the seat face 30 by screwing the threaded socket on to a threaded spigot 32 which is secured coaxially of the mount face 30, the spigot being in communication with a passage 33 in the housing 1 for the delivery of filtered oil to the engine lubrication system. The delivery passage 20 from the oil pump 12, 14 is in communication with a passage 34 which opens into an annular recess 35 in the mount face 30 by which oil to be filtered is delivered to the filter 31.
The oil inlet and outlet passages in the housing 1 may incorporate, in known manner, an oil pressure valve and a by-pass valve so that, when the pump pressure exceeds a predetermined maximum value an outlet to the engine oil sump is opened, and when the filter pressure exceeds a predetermined value, the filter element is by-passed.
The attachment of the assembly described to the seat on the engine is not described or illustrated herein, as it will be well understood by those skilled in the art, or for example, by reference to U.S. Pat. 3,338,229, De Lorean et al., wherein the attachment of an accessory units assembly to a seat on an engine is described and shown, as well as the manner in which the tension of a drive belt or chain on the engine camshaft.
The assembly described provides a compact arrangement of the engine accessory units which can be readily incorporated in the assembly before the latter is attached to the engine, thereby reducing manufacturing costs and lessening the possibility of improper assembly.
