Description

C. N. ORPEN.
Reservoir for Lamps.l i l No. 36.060. Patented my 29, 1862.
Wmesses: 'D11/enter: @a if 'y W/c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES N. ORPEN, OE NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN GAUDU, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLACING RESERVOIRS FOR LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,060, dated July 29, 1862.
made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Reservoirs for Lamps;
` and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein I have represented a vertical section of my said improvement. Y
In cities and towns particularly a large number of the housesare supplied with gas pipes and ixtureswhich add to the ornamental appearance, but also allow for the introduction of gas from the gasworks. Since the introduction, however, of coaloil many persons prefer to use the same, as giving a good light at less cost than gas. The gasxtures are generally located at the places most-convenient, and my invention provides for the application of a lamp directly to the burner, to take the place of a jet of gas.
The nature of my said invention consist-s in the introduction of a socket, a,y in the bottom of the reservoir b, which reservoir is to contain the. coal or other oil and be provided with any desired wick and burner. The aforesaid socket a is of a siz'e and shape to't over the gas-burner c upon any ordinary gas pipe or fixture, and a small sleeve, d, of india-rubber or other suitable yielding material, introduced over the burner, causesthe sockets to set more tightly upon the burner.
The reservoir b and socket a may be of glass or any suitable material, and should have a small base around the socket, in order that the reservoir may stand when lifted off the burner..
By this construction I am enabled to apply a lamp directly to the gas-burner to take the place of a jet of gas, or the same can be lifted oft' and transported from place to place as required.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patentis- 1. The socket a, applied in the reservoir b, to set over the gas-burner c, as and for the purposes speeied.
2. The elastic sleeve d upon the burner c, to receive the socket a, as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 28th day of April, 1862.
OHAS. N. ORPEN.
