STEAM-BOILER FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,385, dated March 29, 1887. Application filed December 17, 1385. Renewed August-2G, 153516. Serial No. 211,942. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN Hau, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in thc county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful' Improvements in Steam-Boiler Furnaces, of which the following 1s aspecifcation.
This invention relates to certain improvements on the devices described in Letters Patent No. 331,635 granted to me December 1, 1885, and has for its object to render said de vices applicable to tubular steam-boilers with metallic ire-boxes-such, for instance, as locomotive-boilers. l
The peculiar and novelconstruction of the device which constitutes mypresent invention is pointed out in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanylng drawings, in whichm Figure 1 represents a transverse vertical section of a locomotive-boiler in the plane x x, Fig. 2. In the drawings, the letter A designates the shell of a locomotive-boiler. Bis theire-box; C, the smoke-box, and E E are the fire-tubes.
In the interior of the fire-box is situated the air-distributer F, the front end of which rests upon a bracket, G, secured to the inside of the front wall of said fire box, while the rear end of said air-distributer is supported by one or more air-supply pipes, For this purpose two or more of the fire-tubes are made to extend a sufficient distance beyond the rear wall of the fire-boxand into the rear end of the air-distributer, and in order to produce a convenient connection between the air-distributer and t-he air-supply pipes I use a cap, H, the cover of which is perforated to admit the ends of the air-suppl y pipes, and which is provided with a ange, a, (best seeninFigs. Sand 4,) which is perforated for screw-bolts b, by means of whichit can be readily secured to the inner end of the air-distributer. The bracket G is concave, (see Fig. 3,) and the outer end of the air-distributer rests loosely on thesame,
so that said airdistributer can expand and coutract by the changes of the temperature to which it is subjected. At the same time the concave bracket retains the end of the air-distributer against the jar ot' the locomotive. When the bolts b are unscrewed, the air-distributer can be readily removed.
The outer ends of the air-supply pipes extend into thesmoke-box C, and they are connected to an air-box, I, from which extends the air funnel K. This air -funnel extends up through the top of the smoke-box on the side of the smoke stack, and it is provided with a bell-shaped mouth-piece, so that when the locomotive moves forward a quantity of atmospheric air passes through the air-supply pipes into the air distributer, whence it escapes through a large number of perforations for the purpose ot' producing combustion of the unconsumed gases which rise from the re in the fire-box. 'Ihe air-funnel K may be connected to the air-box I in such a manner that it can be swiveled round, in order to catch the air when the locomotive moves in a backward direction. In the air-funnel is placed a valve, c, which can be adjusted from the engineers cab by means of a rod, d, so as to regulate the quantity of air admitted to the air-distributer.
In practice I propose to place two air-distributers into the fire-box, one on each side, so that a sufficient quantity of air may beintroduced toproduce complete combustion of the unconsumed gases which rise from the fire in the fire-box, and since the air-supply pipes E* extend through the boiler' the air on reaching the air-distributer is heated to such a degree that it is not liable to cool off the temperature in the dre-box.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a tubular steamboiler and its metallic nre-box, of a bracket attached to the inner side of the front wall of the vfire-box, one or more air-supply pipes extendcated in the top part of the fire-box betweenv IOO the tube-sheet of the boiler and the front Wall of the fire-box, substantially as described.
2. The combination, With a tubular steamboiler and its metallic [ire-box, of a bracket attached to theinside of thefront Wall of the firebox, one or more air-supply pipes extending through the boiler and terminating in front thereof, and a perforated air-distributer sup- -ported at its rear end by said air-supply pipe or pipes and loosely resting at its front end on the bracket Without rigid connection therewith, so as to expand and contract longitudinally without breakage of its support, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with avtubular stean1- boiler and with its metallic fire -box,ofabracket secured to the inside of the front Wall of the re-box, one or more air-supply pipes extending through the boiler, a cap secured to the inner ends of the air-supply pipes, and an airdistributer supported at its front end by the bracket and secured at its rear end to the cap, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination, with a tubular steamboiler having a metallic Firebox, B, at one end and a smoke-box, C, at the other end, of airsupply pipes extending through the boiler and projecting from each end thereof, the perforated distributer located Wholly Within the upper part of the tire-box, between the front wall thereof and the tube-sheet of the boiler, and
