GEORGE A. COLOMB, OF CONVENT, LOUISIANA.
ARTIFICIAL TOOTH CROWN.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 360,206, dated March 29, 1887.
I Application filed August23,1886. Serial No. 111,662. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. GoLoMB, of Convent, in the parish of St. James and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Artificial Tooth-Crowns, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention in artificial denture relates to artificial tooth -crowns to be used and inserted on the roots of natural teeth in the mouth; and it consists in a tooth-crown of novel construction for said purpose, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a partly-sectional 1ongitudinal view of my improved crown applied to the root ofa natural tooth; Fig. 2, a longitudinal view of the crown as seen from its back; and Figs. 3 and 4, views in perspective, in reverse positions, of a tube or cylinder used in the construction of the crown.
The tooth-crown A represented in the drawings my invention produces complete and finished, ready to be inserted in or mounted on the root B of a natural tooth. Said artificial crown is composed in part of a shell or main crown part, b, made of the porcelain compound usually employed in the manufacture of artificial teeth, or such part may be made of any other suitable material, and it virtually forms the crown. In the center or interior of such crown or crown partbisa metallic tube or cylinder, 0, shaped on its outer surface so as to afford a firm and solid attachment for the outer porcelain shell or part, b. This tubular structure 0 is so thickened or expanded at its one end as to form a metallic covering for the base portion of the crown. and is made concave on its base 0, so as to case in and over the end of the root B of the natural tooth and to form a recess or receptacle for packing material d, preferably an amalgam, interposed between the crown and root. The concave portion 0 has two or more radial or transverse slots or grooves, e, made in the surface of its base, to give a firmer grip or hold to the packing material 12, and to prevent the crown when in position from rotating or turning. The opposite or smaller end of the tubular core or metallic structure 0 has a small flange,f, on its outer surface, and projecting more or less tangentially from the opposite sides of said flange are pins or arms 9, having heads h on their outer ends arranged to face the front part of the porcelain shell b, which they enter and serve as anchors or looking devices to.
The interior of the tubular metallic core or structure 0 is of different sizes, the same be: ing of larger diameter or area on its outer end for about one-half or two-thirds of its length, as at t, and of smaller diameter or area for the remainder of its length, as at It, so as to form a countersink or seat, Z, for asmall bolt-screw, m, or other fastening used to attach the crown A to the root B.
An artificial tooth-crown made as herein described is not only ready and complete in itself for attachment to the root, but possesses great strength and durability, as well as being neat in appearance and capable of being adapted to a great variety of work. It will effectually protect from decay and seal up the end of the root, and is comparatively inexpensive. It can be fastened to the root by almost any of the well-known means used in fastening crowns on roots, from the ordinary wooden peg to the golden screw or bolt.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An artificial tooth-crown composed of an outer composition shell or crown part,'b, and an incorporated hollow metal structure, 0, embedded and anchored in said composition and constructed with a concave base, 0, and one or more lateral engaging projections at or near its opposite end, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the composition shell or crown part b and the hollow metal structure 0, embedded therein, having an aperture, t'lc, through it of different diameters, a flaring concave base, 0, grooved on its interior surface, and an outer flange, f, at its opposite end, with side arms, 9, having outer heads, h, the whole forming an artificial tooth-crown ready for application to the root of the tooth, substantially as specified.
