UNITED STATES ATENT "lrrren,
MELANCTHON E. ZELLER, OF BLUFFTON, OHIO.
BRIDLE.
`SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,193, dated March 29, 1887.
Application tiled October 7, 1856. Serial No. 215,569.
(No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beitknown that LMELANOTHON E. ZELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bluffton, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bridle-Bits, of which the following' is a speeication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to bridle-bits, and has for its object theprovision of an article which, while capable of use on any and all animals, is especially designed for use on horses that are easily frightened; and to these ends the invention consists in the combination, construction, and arrangement of the several parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth, and specilically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure l is a view of a horses head, showing the application of the bit; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the bit detached from the horses mouth, and the reins.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the bit proper, which is made ol' any suitable shape-that is to say, jointed, straight, rubber covered, chain, Src-and is provided at each end with an enlarged skeleton side piece, B, having two loops, b b, disposed one above the other, and a side loop,b2, on opposite side from the latter, provided with a trunnion, cast integral with the side piece B, by means of which the bit A is attached to the said side pieces B. The bridge b* between the two loops b b is preferably slightly curved outwardly near its center, the object of which will presently be explained.
C designates the cheek-strap of the bridle,
each side, as shown in Fig. 2, to which the d reins are attached.
By my construction a sliding Fulcrum upon the bit is obtained, whereby great pressure can be applied to the horses mouth with little power, thus enabling a weak or delicate person to control a vicious horse.
I do not conline myself to the exact form and construction ofthe several elements herein shown and described as an embodiment ot' my invention, but reserve the right to make such changes and modifications therein as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
What I claim is- In a bridle, the combinatiomwith a bithaving a loop or frame at each end to inclose the cheek-straps, of the cheek-straps and rings at their lower ends, to limit the downward movement of the bit and provide means for the convenient attachment of the reins, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MELANGTIION E. ZELLER. lVitnesses:
