NITEB STA'1ES JAMES A. KIBBY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB T ERNEST S. BENSON AND GEORGE T. HOUSTON, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
. SEAL-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letcrs Patent No. 360,100, datec'l March 29, 1887.
Applioation file(l Soptomber 7, 1886. Serial No. 212.949, (ModoL) To all whom it may concorra:
Be il; known that I, JAMES A. KIRBY, residing ai; Chicago, in t-he county of Cook and State of Illinois, and {L oitzon of the Unitod States,
have nventod a now ancl usoful lrnprovemenb in Sea1-Looks, of whioh the following is a full clesorption, reforence being had to the accompa-nying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elovation showing the look ID applied to a (1001, the full door and side not being shown, but; only so muoh thoreof as is required to show the manner of applying she look; Fig. 2, a. front elevaoion of the look; Fig. 3, a longitudnal seotion of thelook olosecl 1 and che seal in place; Fig. 4, a longitudinal seotion With the seal out off by the sliding bolt and the paris in position for the facoplate to bo swung up; Fig. 5, a detail of the form of seal to be used with the look of Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4; Fig. 6, a front olovation showing a,
modificatiou in the oonstruotion of the sliding bolt orplate and che knife; Fig. 7, 2L (letail in perspective, showingo modifioation in the form ofseal to be used With the oonstruotion of look shown in Fig. 6.
This invention rolates to seal-looks to be used in conneolion With rooeptaolos which are to be seourely lockod and sealed for tlxe purpose of disclosing any tampering Wibh tho con- 0, tnts; and it; has for its objeots to oonsbruct a look whioh con bo readily applied, and by whioh a hingetl faoo-plato Will be held seourely, and whioh con lmve a soal readily appliod t-hereto; ito improve the mannor of zq5plying the seal and the means for breaking or disoon' neoting tl1o sumo when the reoeptaolo is to be opened; to improve the form of the soal and .the mannor of applying it to a look, and to improve tho construction and oporation of the 0 seal-look as a whole; and its nature consists in the soveral parts and combination of parts, horeinaftor dosoribed, ELDd pointod out in the olaims as now.
In che drawings, A represonts a sliding bolt,
5 ono end of whioh, in the form of the oonstruotion shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, has a knifeeclge, a.
B ropresonts a hinged faoo-plate, on whioh is mountod the sliding bolt; A, and this hinged face-plato B, ai; one end, is providod With ears 2), for hinging the hinged faoo-plate B to the supporting or attznohingbasoplate. Thefaoeplato B has across its faootransverselya crosspieoe, B, boneath whioh 1l1o sliding bolb A passes, md on this cross-plato B is a loop, b, for the attaohmont 0f tho ordinary wire or strip soal.
C reprosonts a slot or opening in the foce plato B, inio whioh projoots a pin, 0, from the sliding bolt A, whoh slot C pormits un end cc movemont; of said bolt for the purposo of looking and unlookng the bolt.
D reprosents a base-plate having thorein holes (Z, for tho possage of sorows, bolts, or other dovioos forubtaohing the look as a whole 6 in placo.
E represonts a hoad on tho buse-plato D,and havng a, part, 6, to enter bobwoen the ears 1), so thas apin, o, con bo passod through said oars and part 6 and bingo the faco-plate B to the baso-plate D.
F ropresonts posts 011 the basoplate D, connootod at their outer ends by the oross-piocos f,bonoathyvhioh the end of the sliding bolo A passes whon the look is fastened. 7 5
G reprosonts a. stud on the base-plate D, betwoen the hoad E md posts F, and projooting out so as to have the faco-plate B, whon down, come in contaob with its outer end.
H ropresonts a hasp abtachod to the reooptaole by a sbaple, g, aml hzwing in its body a slot, h, to pass ovor the sbud G. As shown, tho hasp H is attaohod to tl1o oasng of the (loor and the basoplato D is abtaohod to the door, tho arrangemon: shown boing omo for 8 applying tho look to a froight or other oar; bui; tl1o look is to be usod Wibh any roooptaolo which it is dosirod to have soouroly lookod anfl soalorl.
I represents the soal, which con be made of 0 lead or othor sofb material thai; cannot be romoved without boing defaced. As shown in Fig. 5, the seal I has a rivot, i, which onters an oponing, j, in the faco-plnto B, and, as shown, alle inner end of sad oponing is countersunk, and in lino therowibh on the head E is a point, k, against which the ond of the rvet 2' Will striko as the soal is forood down, and by whioh point k tho rivob will be spread Co fill tho oountersink of the opening j, as roo shown in Fig. 3, so that the seal I cannot be removed, except by severing or breaking the rivet The modification shown in Fig. 6, instead of having a knife-edge,a, on the end of the bolt A, has a blade, A. seoured in the crosspiece B, with a knife-edge, a, whieh blade lies above and. in contact With the faoe of the bolt A, and in this arrangement the seal I, instead of being carried by 01 secured to the plate B, is carried by or secured to the bolt A between the blacle A and. the oross-piece f, when the said bolt is closed; end, instead of a single rvet i for the seal I, two rvets czm be used, as shown in Fig. 7, and when two rvets are used two holes j are provicled, as shown in Fig. 6. ,As shown in said figure, the rivetsi are upset or heacled by ther ends striking'the plate B between the slot 0 and the end of said plate. The bolt A in the construetion shown in Fig. 6 has a turned end, A, in whioh is a slot, and through which slot and the loop I) the ordinary wire or strip seal can be passed, if so desirecl.
'lhe bolt A s slipped into place beneath the cross-piece B on the faoe-plate B and the stud or piu o secured thereto in the slot 0, and the plete B is hingecl to the baseplate D by the pin e, when the look is ready for use; and in use the look is attached to the receptacle by seouring the plate D in place With suita.ble sorews or other means through he holes d, and. the hasp H is attached to the receptaole to have its slot h pass over the stud G. 'Ihe plate B s then dropped down over the end of the hasp, and the end of the bolt A is then passed under the cross-pieoe f, and after this is done the seal I is applied by entering the rivet or rivets i through the opening or openings 9', and by spreadng the end or ends of sueh rivet or rivets completing the sealing of the look.
'Ihe seal, if it remains intaot, shows that the receptacle has remaned olosed, and to unlook the receptaole the bolt A is moved in the direction to withdraw its end. from beneath the cross-piecef, whioh movementsevers theneck or riveti of the seal I, eutting off the seztl end allowing the bolt A to be unobstructed in its withdrawal, and when the bolt is wholly withdrawn from beneath the strip or cross-piece f the bolt A and plate B can be turned up and the hasp H removed from the stud G. The lockoan be appliecl end usedagain in thesznne manner'by simply putting a new seal in the place of the one removed.
'Ihe seals are to be lettered aml numbered, as usual, to indicate the party to whom they belong; end in the event it is not tlesired to use a seal to be severed by the sliding bolt A,
the ordinary wre or strip seal can be applied by passing it through the loop I) and. the slot h of the hasp, or through loop b and the slot in the end. AOf theboltA; orboth the seal and. the wire or strip seal oan be used, il so desired.
It will be seen that with either form of construction the seal is removed. through the movement of the knifeedge a,whether the seal is carried by the face-plate B 01' by the bolt A.
It is evident that the look could be attached 130 the body of the reoeptaole and the hasp attaoheclto the door or cover, and the look can be used with other forms of fastening devices than ahasp, without departingfrom the spirit of the invention, whioh is the employment of a sliding looking-bolt and a. seal arranged in connection wth the bolt to be severed by the movement of bolt in being released.
What I claim a.s new, and ,desire to seoure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a seal-lock, the combination, With a base-plate and a. face-plate hinged thereto, of asliding bolt, a riveted seal, end a knife'-edge in proximity to or abutting against the rivet of said seal, so that said rivetissevered by the movement or" the sliding bolt, substantiallyas desorbed.
2. In a. seal-lock, the. oombination, With a face-plate and a seal riveted thereto, of asliding bolt having a knife-edge, substantially es and. for the objeet desoribed.
3. In a seal-lock, the combination, wilh a fece-platea having a seal rveted thereto and hingecl te a ba-se-plate, of a sliding bolt having a kuife-edge,substantially as and for the purpose desoribed.
4. The combination, with a sliding bolt, A, having a knfe-edge, end a hinged fece-plebe, B, having a seal rivetecl thereto, of the baseplate D, having a cross-piece, f, end a stud, G, substantially asrlescribed.
5. A sliding bolt, A, lmving a knifeeclge, end a hinged faee-plate, B, having oross-piece B, and loop b, in combination With the baseplate D, cross-pece f, stud G, end hasp H, substantially as described. H
6. A sliding bolt, A, having a knife edge, end a hingecl face-plate, B, in combination with the plate D, erosspiece f, stud G, hasp H, and the seal I, riveted to the faceplate B, substantielly as described:
7. The combination of the sliding bolt baving a knifeedge aud the base-plate, of the hinged face-plate havng 2m opening for the reception of the rvet of 2L seni, substantially es desoribed.
