To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEOPOLD KIOZANDER, of the city, county and State of New York, and ROBERT RUDDY, of Mount VernomNVestchester county, and State of New York, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Yokes and StufiingBoxes for the Spindles of Steam-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention has particular' reference to yokes, stufiing-boxes, and valves used with inj ectors, or, with inj actor-starting valves, where it is desirable to locate the threaded part of the valvespindle outside of and away from the t5 steainchan1ber,in order to prevent the con` tact between the threaded part ofthe spindle and the steam, thereby lessening the wear and tear, and causing the spindle to last longer.
However, our improvement can be applied 2O not only to injector-valves, but to any kind of steanrvalves and their spindles whenever the location of the threaded part of the spindle at a distance from the steam-chamber is desirable. y
Yokes and stufiing-boxes as heretofore constructed have customarily contained two orr more threaded pins screwed into the yokebody, which pins served as guides 'for the gland or follower, and this latter has been 3o pressed into the stufng-box by two or more nuts engaging with the above-mentioned pins and bearing against the ilanged part of the gland. This construction requires a certain amount of space for the application of wrenches 3,5 when the nutsA are to be tightened, which, vespecially in the case of injectors, is seldom to he had, as injectors,- as a general rule, are placed very close to the boiler, and at least one of the stuffing-box nuts will be so situated that 4o it will be very difiicult to place a wrench between it and the boiler. Furthermore, this construction requires a certain amount of skill in effecting the packing, as it is necessary to tighten all the nuts uniformly. It this is not done, the gland might he pushed in onesided, causing unnecessary friction and a bad leaky packing. It has also been proposed to press the gland into its box by means of a single central pressurenut screwing upon a neck through which the valve-stem passes; but in 5o this plan the nut has been caused to act upon the gland through the intermediary of sepa` rate puslrpins interposed between the gland and the nut. These push-pins, being loose or separate from both the gland and the nut, have required guides th rough which they must pass, and in which they must tit snugly in order both to prevent them from cramping and to cause them to press evenly and uniformly on the gland. This construction enhances the t c cost ot' manufacture and detracts materially from the simplicity of the device, and is not at all times reliable.
The object of our invention is to avoid all these inconveniences, to render the construco5 tion simpler, to make the act of packing independent of the individual skill of the engineer, and to make it reliable and uniform under all circumstances.
The nature of our invention will be best 7o understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, iu'which- Figure 1 is an exterior viewof ouriniproved yoke and stuftingbox, representing its appli cation to a common globe steam-valve, shown sectionallyin dotted lines. The yoke proper consists of the part a, slot- 8o ted at the points b to receive a spanner-wrench, by means of which the yoke is screwed into the injector, valve-body, or any other valved steam-chamber; and it further consists of the cylindrical part c, threaded externally to receive a packingnut, e, and a lock-nut, f, and also threaded internally to form the nut for the threaded portion ofthe valve-spindle'A,which on one end is provided with a suitable handle, t, and on the other end with a valve-disk, k. 9o The part-s a and c are firmly bound together by two bars, d. The cylindrical gland gis provided with two wings, h, which engage Witha circular groove cut in the packing-nut e. The plug n is externally screw-threaded, so that it 93 may readily be screwed into a valved steamchamber, and it is formed with the internal packing box or chamber, Z. Thus the yoke quiring no skill or special careiu packing the valve. The gland will always press uniformly J on the packing material, and is therefore reliable under all circumstances.
By means of the circular groove the wings h are `guardedagainst spieading,and are kept in a centra-l position, which is very material for the effective working of the apparatus. At the same time the circular groove allows the nut to be rotated freely relatively to the wings l1. Besides the groove, other devices might be employed for the same purpose; but we prefer the circular groove on account ofits simplicity.
The lock-nutf has merely the purpose of preventing the packing-nut e from getting loose.
That we claim herein as new, and of our own invention, is as follows:
1. Ayoke consisting of an externally-screwthreaded plug or part, a, adapted to screw into a valved steam-chamber and formed with the packing chamber or box Z, and an internally and externallyscrew-threaded part, c, constituting the spindle upon the exterior of which the packing-nut can screw, and the nut through which the valve-spindle can screw, the two parts being connected by legs or bars, as d.
2. The combination, with the yoke consisting of the externally-screwthreaded plug or part c, the tubular part c, and the connecting legs or bars d, of the packing-nut screwing upon the exterior of the part c and the packing-gland vprovided with wings or prolongations upon which the nut may bear, said wings or prolongations being rigidly attached to or formed in one with the gland, substantiallyas u and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.`
3. The combination ofthe yoke, the packingnut `formed on its bearingfface with an annular i groove, and the packing-glandprovided with wings which enter `and engage said groove, substantially as described, whereby the packing-nut, while steadying` and centering the gland, is free to rotate independently of the latter, substantially as and `for the purposes set forth.
4. The combination of theyoke consisting of a plug adapted to screw into a valved steamchamber and a tubular internally and exterv nally screwthreaded part, c, connected to said plug by legs or bars, as described, with a valvespindle screwing throughsaid part c, a pa'cking-nut screwing upon the exterior of said part c, and a packing-gland formed in one with or rigidly attached to wings or prolongations against which the nut `will bear, `all substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
