Definitions

  • cylinder mounted on said axle and rotatable therewith, hearing means between the frame and each of the ends of the axle, a bearing block housing said bearing means at each end of said axle, a bend spaced apart from each end of the cylinder and fixed to the bearing blocks, the axle ends extending through the bends into the hearing means, pivot means between the bearing blocks and the frame permitting swiveling movement of the bearing blocks about an axis parallel to the frame and an axis vertical to the frame.
  • a carding engine is characterized in that the bearing blocks for the axle ends of the main cylinder are mounted on the frame of the carding engine in a manner which permits swiveling movement thereof at least about the longitudinal and vertical axes with respect to said frame, said axle ends being carried nonswivelably by said bearing blocks, and the bends of the carding engine being rigidly secured to said bearing blocks.
  • FIG. 1 shows a fragmentary side elevation ofthe carding engine
  • FIG. 2 shows a cross section of the carding engine on the line 11-" of FIG. 1 a
  • FIG. 3 is a view corresponding to FIG. 2 of a modification
  • FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 2 of a further modification.
  • FIG. 5 is a fragmentary view of the other end of the axle from that of FIG. 4.
  • the main cylinder has axle ends 11 which are mounted nonswivelably in bearing blocks 12 by means of axially spaced bearings 13 and 14 to ensure that the ends of the cylinder 10 retain parallelism with the inner faces of the bearing blocks 12, and at least at one side to restrain the cylinder against axial movement relative to the bearing block.
  • Bolts 12a fix bearing block 12 to the bends.
  • the bearing blocks 12 are seated on base blocks 15 and are swivelable about vertical axes relative to the blocks 15 on stub axles 16 extending through blind bores 17 and 18 in the bases of the blocks 12 and upper faces of the blocks 15 respectively.
  • the base blocks 15 are mounted for swiveling movement about their horizontal longitudinal axes and for this purpose are rotatably mounted on shafts 19 whose ends are located in bores in mounting blocks 20.
  • the mounting blocks 20 are rigidly secured to longitudinal side frame members 21 of the carding engine.
  • the bends 22 of the carding engine (and possibly other parts) are secured rigidly to the bearing blocks 12.
  • the bends 22 are provided with bearing block 12a at the inner end of which is mounted a bearing 13.
  • a bearing housing 24 At the outer end of the block 12a is a bearing housing 24 and between this housing and the block 12a is located a shim or shims 220 which serve to enable the position of the bends relative to the cylinder 10 to be accurately defined.
  • the bearing housing is secured to the end of the block 12a by bolts 23 and bearing 14 is fixed to axle end 11.
  • FIGS. 4 and 5 it can be seen that the arrangement is similar to FIG. 3 in that there is provided a block on the bends and in that shims 22a and bearing housing 24 are provided at the outer end of the block 120.
  • the bearing 14 is fixed to axle end 11.
  • the block 12a is provided with diametrically opposed part spherical seatings 26 which are located in housing 25 directly attached to the carding engine frame 21.
  • a locating pin 16a is provided in one seating to prevent axial movement. Pin 16a fits loosely in hole 16b in seating 26 at one end of axle 11 (see FIG. 4) and tightly in hole 16b in seating 26 at the other end of axle 11 (see FIG. 5).
  • a carding engine including a frame, an axle, a cylinder mounted on said axle and rotatable therewith, bearing means between said frame and each of the ends of said axle, a bearing block housing said bearing means at each end of said axle, a bend spaced apart from each end of said cylinder and fixed to said bearing blocks, said axle ends extending through said bends into said bearing means, pivot means between said bearing blocks and said frame permitting swiveling movement of said bearing blocks about an axis parallel to said frame and an axis vertical to said frame.
  • a carding engine according to claim 1 in which said bearing blocks are formed integrally'withsaid bends and a swivel pin is carried in said bearing blocks, said pin extending into a base block, said base block mounted for movement about said parallel axis substantially at right angles to the axis of the swivel pin.
  • a carding engine according to claim 2 in which the swivel pin is carried in said base block mounted for movement about an axis substantially at right angles to a mounting block carried by said frame.
  • a carding engine according to claim 3 in which movement ofthebase block is about a shaft mounted in said mount-' ing block.
  • a carding engine according to claim 1 in which the bearing blocks are integral with the bends and in which the bearing blocks are provided with diametrically opposed part spherical seatings located in a housing directly attached to the frame.
  • a carding engine in which one of said seating and said housing is provided with a first locating pin at one end of said cylinder adapted to prevent axial movement ofsaid axle.
  • a carding engine wherein there is provided a second locating pin at the end of said cylinder remote from said first locating pin, said second locating pin being mounted on one of said housing and said seating and extending into a hole into the other of said housing and said seating, said hole being larger than said second locating pin in the direction of the axis of said axle.
