Abstract

This specification discloses a dial type device for recording information of the total calories and carbohydrates a person has consumed during a day. The device has a sheet having the caloric and carbohydrate content of various foods printed on it. The sheet is supported on two rollers. The rollers are connected together through a wheel mechanism made of a knurled wheel which engages two sprockets, one attached to each roller. It has been discovered that while the wheels are, in effect, geared together, the sheet itself may be rolled onto one roller and unrolled from the other and it, and the sheet itself, compensates for the greater rate of movement of the paper onto the ruller roll than onto the roll with less sheet on it. A plurality of numbered dials are supported behind windows to record the amount of calories and carbohydrates read from the chart.

0 o S o PATENTED JUL27 I971 OQCDOQQO 3mm JOSEPH SPITERI GEORGE D. BALDWIN mar CALCULATING MACHINE STATEMENT OF INVENTION This invention relates to recording apparatus and, more particularly, to apparatus for use by persons who are conscious of their diet to record the calories and carbohydrates consumed.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the invention to terpreting and recording device.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved device for recording the calories and carbohydrates consumed by a person.
provide an improved in- DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS according to the in- DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The device disclosed is made up of a diet indicator and information sheet. The device is enclosed in a case which is of a size that can be carried in a pocket or purse.
The indicator is made up of a case having a rear case part 11 and a front case part 12 which are fixed together. A sheet in the form of a scroll assembly 13 is supported on two rollers. The sheet may be made of paper or a suitable plastic and is rolled on rollers 14 and 15. Thumb wheel 17 extends through a slot 27 in the front of the case and thumb wheel 17 has a journal supported in bracket 18. The thumb wheel 17 has a roughened or knurled or toothed outer surface which may act as gear teeth and the gear teeth engage the pinions 28 and 29 which are fixed to the rolls l and 16. Spaced windows 19 and 20 are formed in the face of the front case part 12 and above these windows are formed the spaced small window openings 21. Disks 25, each of which have the numerals 1 through 10 on them, have axles 26 which rest on wire bearing spring 24. The spring 24 is bent to form recesses which receive the axles 26. The ends of spring 24 are fixed at 14 to the ends of the case 1 l. The rear ends of the axles are received in openings in the case 11. The upper edges of the disks extend through slots 22 which are formed by the partitions23 which are fixed to the'top of the rear case part. The ends of spring 24 are supported in openings in the ends of rear case part 11. The spring 24 is bent into convolutions and the second front end of each axle 26 is recessed in a convolution 30 or 31. Thus each disk is restrained to rotate in the rear casepart l 1.
When a person wishing to use the diet indicator, before eating breakfast, he will look up all the food he is planning to eat on the calorie/carbohydrate chart by rotating the thumb wheel. He will then add the figures and record them on the calorie and carbohydrate wheels by rotating the disks 25 until the proper numerals appear in windows 21. He will do the same for lunch, with one exception, he will add his lunch calories and carbohydrates to the reading of breakfast calories and record the total for both meals by rotating disks 25 until the proper numerals appear at windows 21.
He will take the sum of his dinner in the same manner and add it to the calories and carbohydrates for the other two meals. The sum of the three meals should be the total that the doctor recommends for a daily intake. If this amount does not agree, subtract part of the dinner with the aid of your Dial-A- Diet chart until the numerals in windows 21 read the correct amount.
The embodiments of the invention in which we claim an exclusive gropert or privile e is claimed as follows:
l. A evice or accumu ating and exhibiting the caloric and carbohydrate content of foods comprising a case,
a sheet in said case having the caloric and carbohydrate content of different foods on said sheet,
tworollers journaled in said case having the ends of said sheet supported on them,-
a plurality of disks supported in a row in said case having numerals on one surface thereof,
a plurality of small openings in said case, one of said small openings being in front of each said disk through which a number of said disk can be observed,
means to rotate each said disk so that each said numeral will come to view successively in each said window,
and means on said rollers whereby said rollers may be rotated and successive portions of said sheet can be exposed whereby the user may find the caloric and carbohydrate value of different foods,
said case is made up of a rear case part and a front case part,
said front case part having two spaced large windows therein adjacent said sheet through which said sheet may be observed and a row of said openings above said large windows,
means supporting said disks in said case,
each said disk having a plurality of numbers of one through ten on its face,
one said opening being disposed in front of each said disk whereby one number on said disk may be viewed through said opening, and said disks may be rotated to expose each said number successively,
and slots in said case in one edge adjacent said front,
a side edge of each said disk extending through each said slot whereby a user can engage the edges of each said disk with his finger and rotate said disks, bringing a said number into view behind each said disk whereby said user may record the value of calories and carbohydrates in each item of food at a meal,
each said roller has an axle member on one end thereof and a pinion member on the other end thereof,
spaced brackets in said rear case part said brackets receiving said axles,
a thumb wheel rotatably supported on one said axle,
said thumb wheel having a knurled outer surface,
said pinion on said rollers engaging said knurled surface whereby said thumb wheel will rotate said rollers,
an axle extends from each side of each said disk,
a first end of each said axle on each said disk being disposed in an opening in said rear case part,
an elongated spring bent into generally serpentine shape having a plurality of recesses,
means supporting each end of said elongated spring,
and a second end of each said axle resting in one said recess in said spring.
