Abstract

A tailpipe extension for vehicles with internal combustion engines is a one-piece tubular member having a venturi tube portion formed therein and side openings immediately downstream from the waist of the venturi for inducting air to mix with the exhaust gases. The exhaust opening is cut at an angle to divert exhaust gases downward.

Ward, Jr. Attorney-Lyon and Lyon ABSTRACT: A tailpipe extension for vehicles with internal combustion engines is a one-piece tubular member having a venturi tube portion formed therein and side openings im mediately downstream from the waist of the venturi for inducting air to mix with the exhaust gases. The exhaust opening is cut at an angle to divert exhaust gases downward.
TAILPIPE EXTENSION SILENCER WITH VENTURI AIR EXTRAINMENT and downstream thereof there are provided a pair of laterally extending tubular openings This invention relates to a tailpipe section or extension for I the exhaust pipe of-vehicles havinginternal combustion engines and comprises essentially acne-piece tubular member having lateral openings intermediate its ends adjacent to which there is venturi tube section upstream from the lateral openings, which causes the exhaust gases to increase in velocity and thus in their power to induct air into the lateral openings to dilute the exhaust gases and promote complete combustion thereof. The device is preferably made of neoprene which causes the device to act as a noise-reducing member.
In addition to the functions of diluting the exhaust gases 7 with air and promoting complete combustion thereof and the noise reduction above referred to, the device of thisinvention is lightweight, durable, economical, easy to manufacture and easy to install. These and other objects, features and advantages will be apparent from the annexed specification in which:
I FIG. I is a side view of the device embodying the present invention installed on a tailpipe.
FIG. 2 is an enlarged section taken on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1. FIG. 3 is a section taken along the line 3-3 of FIG. 2. Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the tailpipe section or extension 10 is a unitary member generally tubular in disposed substantially adjacent construction and preferably formed of neoprene and has a portion 11 which is narrowed as at 12 to present a venturi tube section having a waist 13. Substantially adjacent the waist 13 14 and 15. Downstream from the tubular openings 14 and 15 there is a tubular section 16 which terminates in an exhaust opening 17, which is cut at an angle for the purpose of directing the exhaust gases downward. A clamp 18 may be used for attaching the extension 10 to a conventional exhaust pipe I9.
While there has been described what at present is considered a preferred embodiment of the present invention it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that various modifications and changes can be made therein without departing from the essence of the invention.
What I claim is:
l. A tailpipe section or extension for the exhaust pipes of internal combustion engines comprising a tubular member having a venturi tube formed therein, said venturi tube having a waist, said tubular member having at least one lateral opening the end of said waist and downstream from said waist whereby air is drawn into said section and mixed with the exhaust gases when said engine is running.
2. A tailpipe section as set, forth in claim I formed entirely of neoprene.
3. A tailpipe section as set forth in claim 1 including a pair of diametrically opposed lateral openings disposed substantially'adjacent to and downstream from said waist.
4. A tailpipe section as set forth in claim 1 including a discharge opening at the end thereof cut at an angle to and vertical with the upper side extending beyond the lower side.

Claims (4)

1. A tailpipe section or extension for the exhaust pipes of internal combustion engines comprising a tubular member having a venturi tube formed therein, said venturi tube having a waist, said tubular member having at least one lateral opening disposed substantially adjacent the end of said waist and downstream from said waist whereby air is drawn into said section and mixed with the exhaust gases when said engine is running.
2. A tailpipe section as set forth in claim 1 formed entirely of neoprene.
3. A tailpipe section as set forth in claim 1 including a pair of diametrically opposed lateral openings disposed substantially adjacent to and downstream from said waist.
4. A tailpipe section as set forth in claim 1 including a discharge opening at the end thereof cut at an angle to and vertical with the upper side extending beyond the lower side.
