UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
"WILLIAM D. SCOTT, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
BELT-LACE GUARD.
SPECIFICATION. forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,944, dated March 8, 1887.
Application filed October .25, 1856. Serial No. 217,142. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. Sco'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BeltLace Guards; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to guards for belt-laces which hold the ends of belts for driving machinery together; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide a simple cheap protection for belt-laces which will proteet the laces from the usual wear by coming in contact with the pulley-wheels over which it runs; second, to provide a cushion between the pulley-wheel and the lacing, so that the strings, while sustaining the strain of the belt, will strike on a soft instead of a hard substance. I attain these objects by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a belt, showing the lacing with the edge of a guard underneath. Fig. 2 is a side view of a belt with a guard over and under it and the position the guards occupy; Fig. 3, a top view of a piece for holding and protecting the ends of the guards; Fig. 4, a side view ofsame in position on a belt.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
a is a belt for driving machinery, the two ends of which are brought together at a and held by the lace b, which passes through the belt in the ordinary manner. 0 is a piece of tough flexible material placed over the lacing on the side of the belt coming in contact with the driving-pulleys of the machinery which it is to operate. Should the belt pass over one pulley and under another, then one of the guards 0 should be placed over the lacing on both sides "of the belt, as shown in Fig. 2.
The ends of the guards are held in position by rivets c passing through their ends and through the belt. In some cases the ends of the guards should be protected. \Vhen this occurs,I place a strip of steel or other metal (shaped as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, marked (1) over the ends. In placing this strip d, I cut slots in the belt at the proper places for the reception of the lips d, which are first introduced into the slots, then pressed down onto the guards c. The rivets are then passed through the parts at o a, 850., and fastened in the ordinary manner. Should there be guards o c placed on both sides of the belt, the rivets e are passed through the whole and fastened in the same way.
I have had these guards in practical use for many months, and find that with the use of oiled rawhide guards (which I prefer using) the life of the lacing is extended many times and is a great saving of labor and trouble. Although I prefer riveting the guards to the belt, I do not confine myself to this exact means of securing them to it, as they may be attached by sewing, cementing, and other well-known means.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination, with a belt, a fasten ing device securing together the ends of said belt, a guard, 0, covering and protecting the said fastening device, and pieces or strips d, secured upon and protecting the ends of said guard, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a belt andaguard, 0, covering the connected ends of said belt, of pieces d, covering and protecting the ends of the pieces 0, substantially as shown.
3. The combination, with a belt and pieces 0, covering the connected ends of said belt, of pieces (Z, covering and protecting the connect-ed ends of the belt, the said pieces (Z being provided with lips d, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
