THOMAS M. IANTALL, OF PUNXSUTAW'NEY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSlGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN ST. CLAIR, OF SAME PLACE.
THILL TUG.
EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,785, dated March 1, 1887.
Serial No. 208,742. (No model.)
which the following is a specification, refer-' ence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the de vice 5 Fig. 2, plan views of the metal faceplate, showing front and back; Fig. 3, a plan of the central stiffening metal washer; Fig. 4, a horizontal or cross section through the con- 1 ter of the device; Fig. 5, a plan view of the strap forming loop or keeperfor end of the strap from back-band,also of one of the screws which secure the parts together; Fig. 6, a detail in plan showinghow the ends ofthe tuck- 23 loop are secured.
This device belongs to that class known as thill-tugs and the novelty consists in the construction of the several parts and in their combination, all as will now be more fully set 2 5 out and explained, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, A denotes the parts through which the thill passes, and 13, attached to the part A, the buckle whereby said part is se cured to the harness. The part A consists of the exterior metallic rims,(), one on each side, the washers D, the central metallic washer, E, and the exterior strap, F, which passes entirely around the washers, its extension fserving as additional means for securing the tug to the harness. The exterior metal rims, O, are shaped alike, and each is nearly circular at the body, and has ends 0 c projecting upward and downward, respectivcl y. In these ends are holes 0. Between these rims O and inside the loop of strap F are the washers D, made of leather, rubber, or any suitable material. I have now shown l'our of these washers, but may use any number, this for the most part depending on the thickness of each washer. These washers are in generalof the same shape as the metallic plates G,and have in their ends holes (I. In these rims the indentations c" at the upper ends allow the rims to fit up snugly against or about the lower part of the buckleframe, In the leather or rubber washer it is not absolutely necessary that there should be any exactness of fit about the buckle'frarne, so long as free movement for the buckle is provided for. The central metal washer, E, is of 5 5 like general shape of the other washers and has holes in its ends. I design to have this washer placed so as to come about in the middle of the other washers-that is, centrally between them-thus having an equal number of 6Q leather washers on each side of the metal washer. This metal washer adds strength and firmness to the structure, The holes in the end and the central openings in the external plates and washers, when all in place in the 6 made'up device, match or correspond; but the central openings in the washers are a little smaller than those of the outside metal rims, and are finished smooth and even on the inside. When, now, the several parts are ad- 0 justed together as has been above generally indicated, the screws or screw-threaded rods or bolts G are passed through the holes at the top and bottom of the metal rims and washers, and being set home draw the metal rims 5 toward each other, and so firmly bind together all the parts. The inner edge of the metal rims will not touch the thill; but this passes through the one opening now formed by the junction of the several washers, and only touches the inner edges of the washers.
It will be observed that the inner face of each metal rim is flanged at c. This gives a seat for the embracing-strap F,and thus is afforded a neat external finish; also, the inner face of each of the metal rims on one side of the rounded part is cut away at c. This affords a seat for the ends it of the strap H,which forms the tuck-loop or keeper for the end of the strap from the back-band to rest in. The 0 ends it of this piece H are enlarged a little at h, and extended beyond the inner edges of 0 and thus the strap will not pull out when the metal rims are screwed together, as has already been explained, which process clamps 5 the ends of the strap H upon the edges of the openings through the tu The ends of the strap H are rounded, so as to make a smooth finish with the inner face of the inner edges of the washers.
Instead of screw-threaded rods to hold the several parts of the tug together, bolts may be used and their ends clinched or headed; but where screws are used there will be easier access to the several parts.
The inside of the washers, where the thill or 5 shaft passes, is so nicely made as to prevent any wear or damage to the same. This device is strong, neat, and durable.
Having now described my invention, what I consider new, and desire to secure by Letters IC Patent, is
1. In a thilLtug, exterior metal rims flanged on their inner faces, and having bolt-holes at their upper and lower ends, combined with leather or equivalent washers and a metal 15 washer, eaeh washer having'holes at its upper and lower ends, the several parts held together by screw-threaded rods or headed bolts and with asurrounding strap, which also holds a buckle, whereby said tug can be secured to 20 the harness, substantially as described.
2. A thill-tugcomposed of exterior metal rims having inner flanged edges and washers between the same, the several parts held together by rods or bolts, as described, com- 25 bined with a strap surrounding said washers and resting on-the flanges of the said rims, substantially as described.
3. A thill-tug formed of exterior metal rims and metal and leather washers between the same, all held together by rods or bolts, sub- 0 stantially as described.
4:- The combination of the exterior metal rims, O, indented at c in their upper ends, the leather and metal washers D and E, and the uniting-screws,with the strap F and buckle B, 3 5 substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
5. The combination of the rims 0, each cut away on the inner face at 0 with the straploop H, having enlarged end h, the washers 0 between said rims, and the screw threaded bolts G, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS PANTALL.
