S. EGLER.
HUB FOR WHEELS.
Patented Mar. 1, 1887.
. WITNESSES I I I I Attorney N. PETERS, PhmwLilhc A'IENT OFFICE.
HUB FOR WHEELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,736, dated March 1, 1887. Application filed December 2, 1886. Serial No. QQdADS. No model.)
To all 2071 0722, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STEPHEN EGLER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pike Mills, in the county of Potter and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hubs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bands for hubs, the object of my invention being to provide a cen tral band having openings through which thei v ends of the spokes pass, said band having side flanges over which additional bands are placed, so as to not only prevent the hub from splitting, but also securing a bearing for the ends of the spokes, as. will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illnstrate my invention, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a hub, showing my improvementsattached thereto. Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in sec tion, showing the parts detached from each other.
A refers to the hub, which is of ordinary construction, said hub being provided centrally with mortises a, in which the ends of the spokes are placed, the mortises being straggled or straight.
B refers to a metallic band, which is provided centrally with openings I), which are adapted to lie immediately above the openings a in the hub, and the central portion, B, is of much greater thickness than the side pieces, I), which project therefrom and are formed integral therewith. These side pieces, I), are
' provided at suitable-intervals with notches or vid ed with straight inner edges, their exterior portion being curved, and these bands are adapted to be driven over the side projecting flanges of the center band, so as to make them conform to the shape of the hub as well as to prevent the hubs from splitting. The outer curved edges of the band C, which is placed over the flanges of the center band, will be on a line or flush with the outer edges thereof. The center band may be made of malleable iron or cast-steel.
By means of the device hereinbef'ore described a regular bearing is provided for the shoulders on the ends of the spokes, and the device will strengthen the hub adjacent to the mortises therein.
The side flanges not only serve the office of holding the center portion of the band rigidly in place, but also prevent the band C materially injuring the hub by burning when they are shrunk upon the same, and if the center band should ever come loose the outer band can be taken off and shrunk on again.
I claim 1. In combination with a hub, a continuous band, B, encircling said hub, provided at its ends with longitudinal notches, and the band 0, arranged to confine said notched ends in close contact with the hub, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a hub, a center band provided with side projecting flanges of less thickness, which project therefrom, said side flanges having notched edges, and bands 0 G, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, substantially as de scribed, of the hub curved longitudinallyfrom its center toward its ends, a band, B, provided at its ends with longitudinal notches, and bands 0, arranged to confine said notched ends and force them in close contact with the curved surface of the hub.
In testimony whereof .I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN EGLER.
