MINERS LAMP. A No. 358,305. Patented Feb. ZZ, 1887.
WMM/wow gnou/Lto@ f l /f l 4 l aum UNITED STATES PATENT OEEi-CE.
EVAN THOMAS, OF ABERDARE, COUNTY OF GLAMORGAN, ENGLAND.
IVIINERS LAIVIP.
SPECIFICATION l'forming part of Letters Patent No. 358.305, dated February 22, 1887.
Application tiled May l1. 1886. Serial No.20l,79;2. (No model.) Patented in France March 9.188G,No.174,646, andin Belgium March l0, 1886, No. 72,299.v
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVAN THoMAs, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at Aberdare, in the county of Glamorgan, Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Miners Safety-Lamps, (which have been patented to me in France, March 9, 1886 No. 174,646, and in Belgium March l0,
41886, No. 72299,) of which the following is u the lamp proper, is of ordinary construction,
which may be varied as may be desired.
a is the reticulated cylinder or cage, which may be of wire-gauze,as usual, the upper portion being, in the example illustrated, doubled in thickness by the, addition of a reticulated cap, a.
bis the outer casing or shield. which'may` be of sheet metal and may be cylindrical, or conical, as shown. It is surmounted by an overhanging cover, b'.
c and e are air-inlet holes.
d dare outlets for products of combustion and air.
f isauietal gua-rd arranged around thelower part of the reticulated cylinder or cage a, and extending upward a certain distance from the upper face of the ring g,which surrnounts the glass h. This guard is made with a iange or projection, f, that serves as a deflector. The form of the guard may be modified by making it cup-shaped and open at the top, leaving an annular space between the wall of the cup and the exterior of the reticulated cylinder or cage a. Opposite the series of holes e e and springing from the inside of the shield is a ringshaped guard,.i, which is curved inward as it extends upward toward the cover of the shield, below which it terminates. It will be observed that the holes d in the cover b of the shield are in a plane which lies outside of the edge of the top or mouth of the ring-shaped guard i.
Air to feed the llame passes into the interior of thelamp through the lower and upper holes, c and e, in the body ofthe shield. The current, after entering the holes, impinges upon the lower and upper guards, which consequently intervene to break the force of currents that otherwise would be liable to cause the flame to be blown through the meshes of the gauze, while products of combustion pass out through the perforations d formed, as aforesaid, in the cover of the shield. A downward current, passing in at the perforations d in the cover of the shield, would be deflected by the upper guard, i, so as to pass outthrough the holes e.
l. A bonneted chimney-lamp comprising, in combination, the lower lamp-standard, the upper outer casing, b b', the reticulated cylinder or cage a a', the support f for said cage, the chamberfbelow said cagetwo or more guards, and the upper and lower inlets, substantially as described.
2. In a miners safety-lamp,'the combination, with a reticulated cylinder or cage, aa', ring g, and au outer casing or shield. b, with lower and upper holes, e and e, of a guard,f, arranged around the lower part of said reticulated cylinder or cage a, -extending upward a certain distance from the upper face of said ring g, and tlauged or otherwise formed at its upper part so as to extend outward nearly to the inner surface of said outer casingorshield, b, thereby serving as a deiiector, substantially as described. v
3. In a minerssafety-lanip, the combination, with the ring g, of the reticulated cylinder or cage a, casing or shield b, with inlet-holes c and e, cover b, with holes d, guardf, with flange f', and guard i, all arranged and operating substantially as' described, for the purpose specified.
