SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,513, dated February 8, 1887.

Be it known that I, JOHN \VEIK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Air Heating Furnaces, of which the following is a Specification.
This invention relates to heating-furnaces; and it consists in the combinatiomwit-h a sectional furnace-barrel and a fire-grate located therein, of a series of alternating perforated distributing plates and deflecting plates arranged in said barrel above the fire-grate and secured between the sections of the barrel.
The'invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my improved heatingfurnace. Fig. 2 is a transversesection of the same in the plane 03%, Fig.

In the drawings, the letter A designates the barrel of the furnace, which is built up of a number of annular sections that are composed of clay or other refractory material, and are tongued and grooved together. The top sections are formed conical to reduce them to the diameter of the flue A at the top of the furnace, through which the gases are led to the chimney. A damper (which is not shown in the drawings) is located in this flue, as usual, to control the draft.
B is the fire-grate, which is situated near the bottom of the barrel, and is provided with a projecting arm, b, so that it can be shaken.
G is the ash-pit, and B and O are the respective doors of the fire-box and ash-pit.
Above the fire-grate is located a series of alternating perforated plates, E, and deflecting-plates F, which are intended alternately to distribute and to contract thegases resulting from the combustion of fuel on the grate. These plates E and F are all secured between the sections a of the barrel, and the perforated plates, which distribute the gases, completely fill out the cross-section of the barrel, so that the gases must'necessarily pass through the perforations, whereby they are finely divided and evenly distributed in the space between the consecutive plates. The deflecting-plates F are smaller in diameter than the interior of the barrel, and are provided with projecting ears f, Fig. 2, which are clamped between the sections of the barrel. Annular spaces are thus left between the walls of the barrel and the periphery of the deflecting-plates, through which spaces or contractions the gases are drawn by the draft of the chimney and are thrown against the walls of the barrel. The number of these alternating perforated and deflecting plates naturally varies with the height of the furnaces.
The furnace is encompassed on all sides by a foraminous screen, G,which closes at its bottom against the base of the same, and is closed at its top by a foraminous cover, so that the external air can freely circulate through the walls of the screen, and by coming into contact with the furnace-walls is strongly heated,and a continual circulation of air takes place.
By alternately distributing and contracting of the furnacegases in the barrel, and by deflecting the same against its interior walls, as described, all the heat of the gases is utilized in heating the walls, so that a very economical heater is produced thereby.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhecombination, with the sectional barrel A and a fire-grate located in said barrel, of a series of alternating perforated distributingplates, E, and deflecting-plates F, arranged in said barrel above the fire-grate and secured between the sections, substantially as shown and described.
