Description

VW.. RBDETT.
SLATEv ROOF. No. 357,503. Patented-feb. 8, 1887'.
UNITED STATES PATENT EETCE.
SLATE ROOF..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,503. dated February 8,1887.
Application tiled April 23, 1886. Serial No. 199,929. (No model.)
following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a slate roof of such construction that the slates may be laid direct-ly on the rafters, if desired,`
and the joints thereof be so tight that it will be practically impossible for any rain or snow to get through the roof.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a portion of a roof embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a section of the same on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4t are detail views of one of my non-c0nducting slates.
A denotes the rafters of the building, and B the larger slates, (preferably about fourteen by twenty-four inches in size,) which may be nailed directly to the rafters, thesev slates being laid lengthwise of the roof, or with their sides extending up the roof, as shown in the drawings. 'These slates have a lap of about two inches, and between the lapping edges I prefer to spread a narrow line of hydraulic or otherwaterproof cement. (Indicated by a.) The joints b between the ends of the slates B are covered by narrow overlapping cap-slates C, which (excepting the lowest one) are of a length which is greater than the width of the large slates B, so that each of the said capslates will cover the nails c, by which the capslate below is secured in place. Between the cap-slates C and the large slates B, I prefer. to spread a line or coating of cement. (Indicated by d.
Tha cement between the lapping edgesof the slates B, and also between the slates B and the cap-slates C, is preferably appliedin a semifluid condition by a reservoir-syringe, a .line of cement being run along the edges of the upper surfaces of the slatestj ust before the overlapping slates are laid in place.
To rendermy improved roof more or less impervious to heat, I prefer to cover the slates on their under sides with a coating of some adhesive paint, on which is sprinkled, while the paint is still wet, sawdust or other similar fine non-conducting material, which will permanently adhere to the slate when the paint is dry.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a slate roof, the combination, with the large overlapping sla'tes arranged lengthwise of the roof, ofthe smaller overlapping capslates covering the joints between the ends of do the large slates, and having a length which is substantially as set forth.
2. In a slate roof, the combination, with the large overlapping slates B, extending lengthwise of the roof, of the overlapping cap slates O, covering the j oints between the ends of the slates B, and having a length which is greater than the width of the said slates B, and a linevgreater than the width of the said slates B,
and a line or joint of cement between the said cap-slates C and the'slates B, substantially as set forth.
4. A slate roof composed of slates provided on their under sides with a non-conducting coating consisting of a comminuted material secured to the slates by an adhesive substance, substantially as set forth.
In testimonywhereof- I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
