In earlier type dressers it was not necessary to change the usual straight inclined plane feed cam when the contour cam on the dresser was changed. With the more sophisticated forms of contours to be formed and the high precision required, it was necessary to go to timed cams. Timed cams consist of profiles on the feed cam as well as on the contour cam. This required changing of both the feed cam and the contour cam when changes of the contour cam were made.
One of the main problems caused by this double cam change was that the cam slide had to be removed from the dresser housing to allow changing of the feed cam on the rear of the cam slide. Many union contracts forbid the operator of the machine to remove any structural parts of equipment and as prior dressers have both electrical and hydraulic components attached to the cam slide, it was necessary in order to comply with the union contracts to call in an electrician, a hydraulic repair man and a machine repair man. This caused the machine to remain idle for hours waiting for these several men to be present simultaneously when cams were to be changed. It was therefore necessary to produce equipment where the operator could remove and exchange the feed cam and contour cam without the assistanceof other men.
I have previously produced apparatus which solves the problems discussed above. The present invention is directed to an improved apparatus which has been simplified.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The apparatus intended primarily for forming contours on grinding wheels and for dressing grinding wheel surfaces, includes a base support. A dovetail slide is mounted on the base support and is vertically adjustable. The dovetail slide carries an elongated slide guide on which the housing is slidably mounted. A main slide is mounted within the housing and removably supports the elongated feed cam and contour cam on the same side of the main slide. An elongated slide is mounted within the housing and has a follower mounted thereon and in contact with the feed cam. This last slide is adjustable with respect to the housing by means of a feed screw secured to the dovetail slide. A ratio cam slide is also mounted in the housing and has a follower at one end in contact with the contour cam. The ratio slide also has mounted thereon a ratio cam. The tool slide carries a follower in contact with the ratio cam. Biasing springs maintain the cams and followers in contact.
By removably mounting the feed and contour cams on one side of the main slide, the so-called front slide, the cams may be easily replaced without dismantling the entire apparatus. An opening in the housing permits ready removal of the ratio cam slide for changing ratio cams. Thus cam changes can be made without dismantling the entire equipment, thus eliminating the problems pointed out above.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The invention will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings showing one embodiment of my invention;
FIG. 1 is a front perspective of one form of apparatus incorporating my invention;
FIG. 2 is a front elevation of the apparatus shown in FIG. 1 with covers removed and parts broken away to show details of construction;
FIG. 3 is a section taken along the line 3-3 of FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is a section taken along the line 4-4 of FIG. 3 with parts broken away to show details of construction; and
FIG. 5 is a section taken along the line 5-5 of FIG. 3.
The preferred form of apparatus made according to my invention includes a base supporting an adjustable slide guide upon which the main 'housing is slidably supported. The main housing slidably supports the dressing diamonds or tools and the cams and followers for causing the housing to move transversely of the wheel being dressed and the dressing tools radially of the wheel to form the desired contour on the wheel. The construction of the apparatus made according to my invention is such that all cams can be removed from the housing without the necessity of completely disassembling the housing, removing all the slides interfering with the electrical controls or circuits, or the hydraulic systems.
Referring now to FIGS. 1, 3 and 4 apparatus made according to my invention includes a base 20, slideably supporting the dovetail slide 21. The slide 21 has fixed thereto a nut 22 engaging in a rotatable screw 23 supported at its ends by base 20. Means are provided for rotating screw 23 including the shaft 24 and helical gears, 25 and 26. Rotation of shaft 24 causes the slide 21 to move up or down to adjust the position of the slide and the main housing which it supports. A casing or cover 27 isfixed to slide 21.
Attached to the dovetail slide 21 is a tranversely fixed slide guide 30 which slidably supports the main housing 31, on ball bearing assemblies 32 and 33. Mounted within the housing 31 is the main slide movable transversely of the movement of the housing and carrying in one face thereof both the feed cam for controlling movement of the housing and the contour earn which controls movement of the tool slide and tools movable parallel to the movement of the main slide. A ratio slide is mounted between the tool slide and the main slide and carries a ratio cam. All cams can be removed easily from the main and ratio slides with ease.
MAIN SLIDE Referring to FIGS. 2, 3 and 4, the main slide 35 is supported on ball bearing assemblies 36 and 37 for movement transversely of the housing 31. This slide is actuated by means of the hydraulic piston 38 having its piston rod 39 secured to the main slide 35 by the bracket 40.
The main slide 35 has removably attached thereto on the same or front surface of the slide, the feed cam 41, and the contour cam 42. These cams can be easily removed and replaced by removing the front cover of the housing.
To produce movement of the housing, adjust the position of the housing, and simplifyoverall constriction, an adjustable slide having a feed cam follower thereon is mounted on the dovetail slide and extends within the housing.
As shown more particularly in FIGS. 3 and 4, a slide 45 has fixed thereto a follower 46. The slide is supported within the housing 31, by ball bearing assemblies 47 and 48. Slide 45 is adjusted relative to the dovetail slide 21 by means of screw 49 attached to slide 45 by means of nut 50 attached to slide 45. Thus while the slide 45 is adjustable, it is fixed relative to the housing 31. Compression spring 49 is provided to eliminate back last between the threads of screw 49 and nut 50.
Follower 46 is in contact with and is biased against feed cam 41 as will be described. As the main slide moves up and down, the housing 31 will move back and forth along the slide guide 30.
A ratio'slide 50 supported in bearing assemblies 51 and 52 has fixed thereto a follower 53 in contact with contour cam 42. A ratio cam 54 is removably attached to the slide 50. Slide 50 is biased to maintain contact between follower 53 and contour cam 42. To permit changing of the ratio cam 54 without disassembly of the dresser, a rod 55 is attached to slide 50 and extends through the opening 56. When plate 57 is removed and the tool slide, to be described, and its follower moved out of contact with cam 54, slide 50 and cam 54 can be removed from the housing 30. A boot or dust shield 58 is provided to keep dust out of the housing.
Tool. SLIDE The tool slide which supports the diamond dressing tools is slidably mounted for movement parallel to the main slide, and has a follower thereon engaging the ratio cam.
The tool slide 60 is mounted on the ball bearing assemblies 61 and 62. The follower 63 is in contact with the ratio cam 54. Movement of slide 50 causes transverse movement of slide 60. Dust shield 64 is connected between the cover 65 on slide 60 and housing 31.
To maintain the cams and followers on contact, see FIGS. 3 and 5, I provide spring- type reels 70 and 71 mounted in the housing 31. The connecting flexible strap or wire 72 on reel 71 has one end 73 fixed to the dovetail slide 21. The biasing spring urges housing 31 and the main slide of the left (FIG. 3) causing follower 46 to maintain contact with feed cam 41. Biasing spring 70 has a flexible strap or wire 74 one end 75 being fixed to the ratio cam slide 50. The biasing spring 70 urges slide 50 to the right to maintain follower 53 in contact with the contour cam 42. The weight of the tool slide assembly maintains follower 63 in contact with ratio cam 53.
The diamond dressing tools 75 are mounted at the upper end of slide 60. Dust shields 76 and 77 are provided between slide 21 and the housing 31.
