2 Claims.
With certain of the grinding machines provided with grinding wheels, for instance with machines for the grinding of gearing, it is necessary that according as the grinding wheel becomes worn down, the said wheel should be brought towards the teeth to be cut and also towards the tool (a diamond) employed for dressing the wheel, and that the distance between the .axis of the grinding wheel and the axis of the gear-wheel should always be equal to the distance between the axis of the grinding wheel and the axis of the dressing apparatus.
The present invention relates to a device which is particularly simple, accurate and easy to employ, by which this result can be automatically obtained.
The said device is chiefly characterized by the fact that the carriage which supports the dressing apparatus is'movably mounted on the carriage supporting the grinding wheel, and co-operates with a guiding member in such way that for each vertical displacement of the carriage supporting the grinding wheel, the carriage supporting the dressing apparatus shall be given a lateral movement which is substantially equal to the upward movement.
The guiding member preferably consists of a guide which is inclined substantially at 45 and is preferably adapted for a certain adjustment.
The carriage supporting the dressing apparatus is subject to a reaction in the desired direction, for instance by means of a spring acting through the medium of a cable.
Further characteristics of the invention will be set forth in the following description with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a constructional form of device carrying the grinding wheel, which is improved according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a corresponding plan view.
Referring to the drawing, the frame I is mounted upon the plate 2 of the grinding machine, by means of a circular part 3 having a V section.
On the frame I is vertically slidable the carriage 4 which supports the grinding wheel 5.
The distance between the axis A of the said wheel and the axis B of the support 6 of the gear-wheel to be ground, should always be equal to the distance between the axis A of the wheel and the axis C of the dressing device, whose diamond or like tool acts upon the grinding wheel at D.
This result is obtained, in conformity with the invention, in the following manner.
The dressing device, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing and generally referred to by reference characters 2|, 22 and 23, is mounted on a carriage 1 which is laterally movable upon the wheel-carriage 4. A dressing device of the of two oblong slots i2 and set-screws I 3.
The two carriages are operated at the same time by a hand-crank l4 upon whose shaft I is mounted a worm I 6. This latter co-operates with a worm wheel I1 mounted on a shaft I8 which provides for the vertical movement of the carriage 4 holding the grinding wheel 5, by means of a screw-thread l9 engaged ina tapped socket which is secured to the said carriage.
It will be observed that when the carriage 4 is thus raised to a certain degree, the carriage 'l which supports the dressing device will rise at the same time, and owing to the groove 9, it will be laterally displaced by substantially the same distance, thus corresponding to the desired conditions.
It is obvious that the form of construction herein described and represented is given solely by way of example, and that it is possible, without departing from the spirit of the invention, to modify in any suitable manner the number. size, shape, nature and assembling of the several parts. The actuating device, as well as the device for imparting the movement to the carriages, may have any desired construction. It should be noted, however, that the form of construction herein represented is particularly advantageous from the fact that the wear is taken up in the same direction in all cases, thus ensuring the greatest accuracy for the apparatus in spite of the simple means employed.
I claim:
1. A gear wheel grinding apparatus comprising a support, a grinding-wheel carriage mounted on said support and adjustable vertically thereon, .a tool carriage adjustably connected with said grinding-wheel carriage, a stud mounted upon said tool carriage, an adjustable inclined guide having a groove entered by said stud, and means for adjusting said grinding-wheel carriage and thereby simultaneously ediusting said tool carriage.
2. A gear wheel grinding apparatus comprising a support, a grinding-wheel carriage mount ed for vertical movement on said support, a tool carriage mounted for horizontal movement on said grinding-wheel damage, a slotted guide member mounted at an angle upon said support, a stud mounted upon said tool carnage and riding in said-slotted member for imparting a horizontal movement to said tool carriage upon vertical movement of said grinding-wheel carriage,
means tending to move said tool carriage in such a manner as to cause said tool thereof to engage the grinding wheel of said grinding-wheel carriage and means for giving said grinding-wheel carriage a vertical movement.
