Abstract

A glass cutting wheel holder in which the wheel supporting axle is swingably secured at one end to a spring loaded bar. Replacement of the cutting wheel is effected by pulling the bar outwardly of its supporting block, rotating the axle about the bar until the cutting wheel falls off the free end of the axle, replacing the wheel with a sharp wheel and rotating and releasing the axle to permit the cutting wheel to resume the operative position.

Juhasz Assistant Examiner-James F. Coan Attorney-Albert F. Konman ABSTRACT: A glass cutting wheel holder in which the wheel supporting axle is swingably secured at one end to a spring loaded bar. Replacement of the cutting wheel is effected by pulling the bar outwardly of its supporting block, rotating the axle about the bar until the cutting wheel falls off the free end of the axle, replacing the wheel with a sharp wheel and rotating and releasing the axle to permit the cutting wheel to resume the operative position.
BACKGROUND OF' TI-IE INVENTION Glass cutting wheels, particularly in glass cutting machines, need frequent sharpening. Presently known holders for glass cutting wheels require a substantial amount of disassembly in order to replace the cutting wheels. Such disassembly increases the amount of labor involved and the down time of the machine.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The glass cutting wheel holder, according to the present invention, employs a block having a longitudinal off-axis bore therein. A spring loaded bar is carried within the block with one end extending therefrom. An axle is secured at one end to the bar and extends normally therefrom across the front of the block. The cutting wheel is carried by the axle. The block is provided with a slot to receive the wheel and a transverse groove for the axle.

FIG. 7 is a somewhat exploded view in front elevation of a cutting wheel holder according to the present invention.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring to the drawing and particularly to FIG. 1, 10 indicates a holder for a glass cutting wheel having a wheel supporting block 11 and shank 12 extending rearwardly thereof. The shank 12 is adapted to be carried by a glass cutting machine and may be cylindrical o r noncircular in cross section.
The block'll is provided with a longitudinal off-axis bore 13 (best shown in FIGS. 5 and 6). The bore 13 is reduced in diameter at the end opposite the shank l2.
A bar 14 is slideably carried within the bore 13. A stop member 15 is screwed into the end of the bar 14 adjacent the shank 12. The stop member is slightly smaller in diameter than the bore 13 and larger than the diameter of the bar 14. A coil spring 17 is carried within the bore 13 around the bar 14 between the stop 15 and the step 18 in the bottom of the bore The cutter end of the bar 14 is longitudinally slit as indicated at 19 for a portion of its length, and transversely bored as shown at 20 in FIG. 2. An axle member 21 is carried at one V end within the transverse bore 20. The axle 21 is tightened within the bore 20 by means of a screw 22, which is threadably received within the bar 14, nonnal to the slit 19.
The support block 11 is provided with a longitudinal slot 23 at the front thereof to receive the cutting wheel 24. A recess 25 in the block 11 permits the head of the screw 22 to move longitudinally within the block, and acts as a stop for the inward movement ofthe bar 14. The front of the block 11 is also formed with a transverse groove 26 to receive the axle member 21.
The operation of the glass cutter wheel holder will be apparent from the foregoing description and the drawings. With the elements assembled in the manner shown in FIG. 1, the holder may be inserted into a glass cutting machine (not shown) or the like by means of the shank 12. If it is desired to substitute a sharp wheel for the cutter wheel within the holder,
it is merely necessary to push the bar 14 forward in the manner shown in FIG. 6.. This operation may be carried out by means of a small rod 27, or by grasping the screw 22 and pulling it forward. When the screw 22 clears the end of the recess 25, the bar 14 can be rotated either up or down in the manner shown in FIGS. 1 and 7. The cutting wheel 24 can then he slipped off the axle 21 and replaced. With a new cutting wheel on the axle, the axle 21 and the bar 14 are again rotated until the axle 21 snaps into the groove 26 by the operation of the coil spring 17. The cutting wheel is then ready for application to a surface 28 of the glass.
From the foregoing it will be seen that there has been provided a simple but positive glass cutter wheel holder in which the cutting wheel can be replaced with a minimum of effort and disassembly.
Iclaim:
l. A holder for a glass cutting wheel comprising a block, a shank carried by the block and extending outwardly thereof, an off-axis bore in said block, a recess in the top of the block communicating with the front portion of the block and a portion of the bore and parallel with said bore, an elongated bar freely carried within the bore, a stop secured at one end to the elongated bar extending outwardly of said bar into the recess to limit the inward travel of the bar, said elongated bar having a longitudinal slit therein and being transverselybored, spring means within the bore to urge the bar in the direction of shank, an axle member secured at one end to the bar and normal thereto receivable within the elongated bar bore, a transverse groove at the block opposite the shank to receive the axle member, a glass cutting wheel freely carried by the axle and a slot in the block, normal to the transverse groove and communicating with said groove, said slot being of the width and depth to receive the cutting wheel therein.

Claims (1)

1. A holder for a glass cutting wheel comprising a block, a shank carried by the block and extending outwardly thereof, an off-axis bore in said block, a recess in the top of the block communicating with the front portion of the block and a portion of the bore and parallel with said bore, an elongated bar freely carried within the bore, a stop secured at one end to the elongated bar extending outwardly of said bar into the recess to limit the inward travel of the bar, said elongated bar having a longitudinal slit therein and being transversely bored, spring means within the bore to urge the bar in the direction of shank, an axle member secured at one end to the bar and normal thereto receivable within the elongated bar bore, a transverse groove at the block opposite the shank to receive the axle member, a glass cutting wheel freely carried by the axle and a slot in the block, normal to the transverse groove and communicating with said groove, said slot being of the width and depth to receive the cutting wheel therein.
