TICKET- PUNCH.

SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 357,000, dated February 1, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J OHN F. HANSOOM, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ticket-Punches, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

Thisinvention relates to that class of pu nches in which a yielding clearer or ticketstripper is employed between the jaws to clear the punched ticket from the male die which has penetrated it.

My invention is in the nature of an improvement upon the punch patented by Orocker' April 30, 1867, No.64,286. In said patented punch the jaws were of unequal width and length, the one carrying the male die being passed endwise through a recess formed in the other jaw and shortened, so as not to project beyond said die. necessary to attach a plate to the back of the jaw and cause it to project beyond said die, in order to provide something to which to connect the outer end of the stripper and its retracting-spring. My improvement adds greatly to the symmetry of the implement, since the jaws, of equal breadth and length, are each recessed laterally at their pivotal point and are brought together sidewis'e flush with each other, and no supplementary plateis required,because the jaw extends solidly beyond the male die, with a cavity in such prolongation to receive the end of the spring and connecting-pin from the end of the stripper. A saving in labor and number of parts thus accompanies increased utility, and there is no part to become loosened, mislaid, or lost.

My invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts herein described and shown, as stated in the appended claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved punch with the jaws open ready for use; and Fig. 2, alike view, partly in section, showing the position of the parts at the time of punching a ticket.

A and B are the two jaws, recessed laterally at their crossingpoint and united through the center of such recessed portion by the pivot E. An actuating-spring, S, between the jawlevers near their pivot holds them normally Such construction made it open. The male die 0 is fixed to or integral with the jaw A, and the female die D is formed in the jaw B.

Between the jaws the stripper F, pivoted to jaw B at thepoint G, is made with an opening, H, for the male die to pass through it, and its free end has a depending lip, E, which acts as a guide to carry the ticket between the stripper and the female die and keep it from getting beneath the stripper. This lip or extremity of the stripper is hollowed out to re ceive one end of the spring J and perforated to admit theconnecting-pin K.

The jaw A is prolonged beyond the male die 0, and such extension of it is recessed to formal. seat for the end of spring J and perforated through the center of such recess to receive loosely in a smaller hole the connecting-.pin K, which spring and pin permit the stripper to approach near to the jaw A, as in Fig. 2, but not to be thrown farther from it than its normal position. (Shown in Fig. l.) The pin K passes through the spring J, and its end projects entirely through the extension of jaw A, witha'head preventing its withdrawah This prolongation or solid end of the jaw A, with its two-sized hole for spring and pin, is peculiar to my punches, the supplementary plate. with its projecting screws being dispensed with.

I claim as my invention In a ticket-punch, two pivoted jaws, A and B, of like dimensions, recessed laterally and brought flush togethervat their pivotal point, and carrying, respectively, the male and female die, in combination with the stripper F, pivoted to the jaw B, made open to permit the 'male die to work through it, and with the end of the connecting-pin and retracting-spring for the stripper located in a recess formed in the solid jaw A, prolonged beyond the male die, substantially as set forth.
