Description

(N Mdl 8 5 J. J. GLOVERK COMBINED ANVIL AND VISB. No. 258,855. Patented May 80,1882.
) WITNESSES VENTOR 'ATTORNEYS J UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. GLOVER, OF DARDANELLE, ARKANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO LOUIS O. HALL, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED ANVIL AND VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 258,855, dated May 30, 1882. Application filed October 20,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN J. GLoVER,a citizen of the United States, resident of Dardanelle, in the county of Yell and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in a Combined Anvil and Vise; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being bad to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The figure of the drawing is a representa- -tion ofa side elevation, partly in section, ofmy
device.
This invention has relation to a combined anvil and vise; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the anvil, anvil-block, and a detachable vise, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawing, A designates the anvil-block, having achannel,B, in its upper end, extendingnearly the entirelength thereof, as shown. In the block A, at the bottom of this channel, is a recess, O, for the reception of a stud, D, on the under face of the angular arm E. and arecess, F, at the mouth ofthe channel B, is provided for the reception of the lower end of the piece G, having thet'emale screw H, slot I, and key 1', as shown. The angular arm E is slotted at K for the passage of the foot of the piece G, and is provided at its inner end, and upon the upper face thereof, with a stud, L, which enters a recess, M, in the base of the anvil O. The anvil O has the usual holes for the reception of the cutters and swages. The
" lower end of the piece Gris passed through the slot K in the arm E and into the recess F. The upper end of the piece G is then intro duced into the hardy-hole P from the under side, and the key I is introduced into the slot I tolock the piece G in place. The movable jaw Q of. the vise, carrying the spring R, screw S, and lever T, is then connected to the piece G by introducing the male screw S into the female screw H, and passing a pin, U, through perforations in the lugs V V at the lower end of the arm E and through a'hole, W, in the foot of the jaw Q. The jaw Q and the quarterface of the anvil form the jaws of the vise.
When itbecomcs necessary to use the anvil without the vise the latter may be dropped down out of the way by simply withdrawing the pin U and key I, which permits the piece G to drop a sufficient distance to present the hardy-hole for use. The pieceGonly extends about a quarter of an inch up into the hardyhole, and the cutters and swages may be'used without removing it entirely.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the anvil O, recessed in .its base at M, with the anvil-block A, having the channel B, recesses G and F, the angular arm E, having slot K, studs D and L, and the lugs V V, the piece G, slotted at I, key I, inovablejaw Q, pin U, screw S, and lever T, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
' JOHN J. GLOVER. Witnesses:
T. M. Gieson, G. L. MEYERS.
