To all whom it may concern..-

Be it known that I, \VENDELL E. TURNER, of Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stair Pads, of which the following is a'specification.

My invention relates to stair-pads which are severally composed of an envelope of cotton cloth or other fabric and a filling of cotton or other fibrous material. Such pads are advan tageous, because they may be washed out when dirty in the same way as an article of clothing; and the object of my invention is to provide such a pad with convenient means for attachment at its front edge to a stair tread or riser, so as to hold it securely in proper position, and also to prevent the shifting or lumping of the filling within the envelope when the pad is washed, or by the action of the feet in ascending the stairs.

The invention will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of a stair-pad embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of such pad applied to a stair-tread.

Similar letters of reference designate corre sponding parts in both figures.

The pad consists of a covering or envelope, A, of coarse muslin or other inexpensive fabric, and a filling, B, of loose cotton fiber or any other elastic and yielding fibrous material. I prefer to make the filling of cotton or other material which will not be injured by the thorough soaking and washing of the pad in water.

I secure the covering or envelope and the filling B together in this example of my invention by lines of stitching a, which pass through them, and which cross or intersect each other, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the filling is retained in position very securely within the covering or envelope, and will not be liable to lump up within the envelope by use, or by rubbing and washing out the pad,as one would an article of clothing.

The filling B does not extend throughout the entire width of the pad, but at one edge terminates short of the edge of the envelope A, and is confined at that edge by a longitudinal row of stitching, a. This forms at one edge of the pad and beyond the filling B a thin flap, A, which comprises only the envelope or covering fabric A, and when the pad is laid upon a stairtread, O, as shown in 2, this thin flap A may be tacked to the front edge of the tread C, or to the riser D, immediately below the tread, so as to hold the pad. securely in place.

By my invention I provide an inexpensive pad, which may be washed out in the same manner as one would wash an article of clothing, and which has the filling so secured that it will not be lumped up or displaced by washing or by use, and so that a thin flap is formed at the front edge of the pad for securing the pad to a stair tread or riser.

\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A stair-pad consisting of a covering or envelope of woven fabric and a filling of fibrous material, the covering or envelopehaving a straight line of stitching, a, at the front of and beyond the filling, to form a thin flexible flap, A, for attachment to the stair tread or riser, substantially as herein described.

2. A stair-pad consisting of a covering or envelope of woven fabric and a filling of fibrous materiahthe two being secured together by crossing or interlaced lines of stitching, and the covering or envelope having a straight line of stitching, a, at the front of and beyond the filling,to form a thin flexible flap, A, beyond the line of stitching for attachment to a stair tread or riser, substantially as herein de scribed.
