SIGNOBSl HYATTV AND OLIVER BASOOM, OF WHITEHALL, NEW

IMPROVEMENT IN KNIFE OR Soissons sHARPl-:NI-:Rst
. Tall whom it may] concern:
Be it known that we, IsAIAH S. HYATT and JOHN W. HYATT, Jr., of Chicago, in the county of Gook\and State-of Illinois, have invented an Improved Knife or Scissors Sharpener;` and Wedo hereby declare that the following isa fullandexact description thereof, reference being had t`o theaccompanyi ng d rawing,f.which isa"sidefelevation of the machine complete@ l y Our present invention is an improvement upon the knife-Sharpener for which Letters Patent ofthe United States were issued to us,
dated February 119,1. 1861, and relates to the adaptation of thelsame to the sharpening of TheV nat-ure ofour invention consists in the use of a stationaryfrestfor guiding and sus- "taining the blades ofkshears or scissors at the `proper ang1e,'*lin connection with a grindingwheel for sharpening` the same, the said rest being formed double, so asrto enable both coinmon shears and sheep .-shears,which are ground at opposite anglesptgbe sharpened on the rlhe natureofour invention also .consists in the combinationof a scissorsrest, either single or double,` with twinzgrinding-wheels, kept together by a spring or equivalent means, and so arranged as to admit `of the sharpening of both knives andscissors by the same machine.
` To enableothersj skilled in the art to make and use 'our invention, we will proceed to describeits construction and- Operation by the i aid of thedrawingand the letters of reference marked thereon.
` Al is a frame of cast-iron or othen suitable material, and B alfriction wheel, pulley, or
` gear havinga bearing therein. I G is a grinding-wheel, made of any proper substance, and fitted in bearings in the frame i A friction` wheel, pulley, or gear, c, on l-...theshaft of C communicates "motion thereto "from the wheel B. f
C is a grinding-Wheel similar to C, and held in close .contact therewith by means of the spring E, so that C is driven` by friction from C.
All these parts are the same as shown in ourpatent of February 19, 1861, before referred to, and are used for the saine purpose-viz., sharpening knives by placing the edge between the wheels G and C' and revolving B iu the direction of tle arrow.
Upon the frame A We affix a rest, D, by casting or otherwise, which rest makes such an angle with the surface of C that when a 4shear-blade is placed against D the surface of the other, d', for sheep-shears. By this arrangement of a double rest the value of the machine is muchincreased. lThe rest D isso arranged relatively to the rolls O and O that it in no Way interferes with their action when grinding a knife, and it is always ready when it is desired for grinding shears.
Having now Vfully described-our invention, what We claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1.v The combination and arrangement ofthe double rest d d' andgrinding-Wheel O, s ubstantially as and for the purpose herein specified.,
2. The combination of the scissors-rest D, either double or single, with the twin grinding-wheels C C', kept in contact by a yspring or its equivalent, the Whole forminga machine for sharpening both scissors and knives, sub stantially as herein described.
In testimpny whereof Wehave h'ereunto set our hands. I
ISATAH S. HYATT. JOHN W. HYATT, JR.
