INVENTOR MICHAELJ. POLLAQD ATTORNEY BACKGROUND or Tl-lE lNVENTlON This invention pertains to fastening means for shuttle box coverings and more particularly to the back box plate which overhangs the entrance of each shuttle box. As a guide for the fast moving shuttle as itenters and leaves the box, the back box plate is positioned to align the shuttle in a proper pathway. A covering of leather or other material 'is often used for checking the shuttle through frictionalcontact as well as for providing protection against shuttle damage. As a result of the continual contact with the shuttle, the covering tends to wear and require replacement within relatively short intervals. This invention is directed toward a simplified means for permitting easy removal and replacement of the covering as well as for maintaining the covering in position when in use.
Back box plate leathers have generally been fixedly attached by using a series of screws inserted through properly positioned holes in the leather into threaded holes in the box plate. Attachment and removal have been time consuming and the original cost has been unnecessarily high.
SUMMARY or THE INVENTION A spring fastener is provided for the covering on a back box plate which exerts a tension for drawing together the ends of the covering with sufficient force to maintain its position upon the back box plate. Application is easily made by inserting each spring hook through a hole randomly pierced into each of the covering material. v
It is the general object of this invention to devise a means for fastening the frictional covering upon a back box plate which shall be inexpensive to manufacture'yet easy to install and remove. With the fastener of this invention, aback box plate covering may be replaced in moments.
BRIEF DESCRlPTlON or THE DRAWINGS The invention will be described by reference to a specific embodiment as illustrated in the accompanying FlG. of drawing showing in perspective a back box plate for a loom having the covering material retained by the spring fastener of the invention.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Now referring to the drawing, a back box plate 10 is shown with an integrally formed flange 11 which will overlie the entrance to the looms shuttle box for purposes well known in the weaving art. Covering the under surface of the substantially horizontally extending flange 11 is a strip of box plate leather 12 cut to conform generally to the flange. The box plate leather 12 may have a rubberlike backing 13 to provide cushioning for the leather strip. The box plate leather I2 is bent upwardly at the ends 14 and 15 to partially overlap the upper surface 16 of the flange 11.
A coiled tension spring 17 is fastened between the leather ends 14 and 15 by having the two end coils pierced through the ends as at 18 and'l9 The spring 17 provides a moderate tension force to urge the ends 14 and 15 toward each other and, combined with the nearly 180 bend at each end, will lock the box plate leather in place.
Application and removal of the back box plate leather are easily accomplished with the instant invention and the leather is held in position without the need for screws or tapped holes as were previously required.
lclaim:
l. A back box plate for a loom comprising a substantially horizontally extending flange defining an under surface and an upper surface, a strip of box plate leather coextensive with said under surface having ends overlapping said upper surface,
and a tension inducing member supported by and extended between said overlapping ends for drawing said overlapping ends toward each other along said upper surface.
