Abstract

A power-driven wheelbarrow and brick transporting device comprising a motor-driven carriage supporting a wheelbarrow for mortar and a lift for brick and/or building block whereby mortar and a stack of brick and/or building block can be moved about together on a building site, and the brick lift can be detached from the wheelbarrow when it is desired to use the wheelbarrow by itself.

Schwenzer [54] POWER DRIVEN WHEELBARROW AND POWER DRIVEN WHEELBARROW AND DETACHABLE BRICK LIFT It is an object of my invention to provide a labor saving device in the form of a power-driven wheelbarrow in combination with a brick and/or building block carrier whereby a supply of mortar and brick can be moved about on a building site simultaneously by one operator thus reducing manual labor and time for keeping bricklayers supplied on a bricklaying job. i
A further object is to provide a motorized wheelbarrow and brick transporting device that will enable a laborer to transport a greater quantity of mortar and brick at one time and thereby reduce the labor necessary for moving brick and mortar on a bricklaying job.
A primary object of my invention is to provide a mortar and brick transportation power driven device that enables a single operator to transport greater loads of mortar and brick together from place to place on a building site whereby a saving in labor is accomplished and strenuous labor is reduced to a minimum.
These an other objects will become apparent from the drawings and the specifications forming part of this applica tion.

Referring to FlG. 1 there is illustrated a carriage chassis 1 supported on a pair of rubber tired wheels 2 and a third wheel 3 for facilitating the steering of the wheelbarrow. The wheel 3 is rotatably supported on an axle 4 that is secured in a swiveling bifurcated yoke 5. The swiveled yoke is rotatably secured on a king pin 6 that is secured in the carriage chassis at 7 and the yoke and third wheel swivel about this king pin. Fixed on the chassis there are a pair of extended guiding handles 8 which, when moved to the right or left in a horizontal plane, will cause the swiveled wheel to rotate about the king pin and thereby my wheelbarrow with my lift attached to it will change direction of travel.
Secured on the chassis there is an internal combustion engine 9 having remote controls (not shown) secured to the handles to regulate the speed of the engine and hence the speed of travel of the wheelbarrow. A driving sprocket 10 is driven by the engine. This driving sprocket wheel is connected by means of a sprocket chain 11 to a clutch driven sprocket 12. The driven sprocket wheel 12 is rotatably mounted on a shaft 13. This driven sprocket rotates the shaft 13 when a clutch (not shown) is brought into engagement with the driven sprocket. The clutch is slidably keyed on the shaft 13 and the engagement and disengagement of the clutch with the driven sprocket wheel 12 is accomplished by remote control (not shown) that is secured on the handles. The movement of the wheelbarrow with the lift is controlled by the engagement or disengagement of the clutch with the driven sprocket wheel. The shaft 13 is rotatably mounted in bearing blocks 14 that are secured on the bottom of the chassis. The rubber tired wheels 2 are secured on the shaft 13 and they rotate with the shaft when the clutch is engaged with the driven sprocket.
At end 15 of the chassis (see FIG. 5) piovides a hollow rectangular receptacle 16 with a slot 17 in its bottom 18 to slidably receive and retain a tongue 19 for coupling the lift to the wheelbarrow. The tongue, when it is secured in the rectangular receptacle, is supported on bottom ledges 20 of the rectangular receptacle.
The lift has a base 21 that is rotatably supported on swiveling casters 22. The tongue 19 is secured to and extends outward from the base and is adapted to slide into and be retained within the rectangular receptacle. A latch 23 is rotatably secured on a pin 24 that is secured in bosses 25 on an end of the tongue. The latch has a slot 26 for engagement with a top side 27 of the rectangular receptacle.
An opening 28 is provided in the top side of the rectangular receptacle to allow the latch to be rotated into engagement with an edge of the top side of the rectangular receptacle. A drawbar 29 is rotatably connected to the latch by a pin 30. The drawbar has threads 31 and it is slidably retained in a fixed boss 32 that is secured on the tongue. A threaded rotatable hand wheel 33 abuts against the boss 32. When the hand wheel is rotated it will rotate and pull the slot 26 on the latch 23 into engagement with the top side of the rectangular receptacle. An abutment has another notch 34 that is secured on the tongue. This notch is adapted to receive an end opposite the end of the rectangular receptacle that is engaged by the slot in the latch 23. When the rectangular receptacle is clamped in the notches of the abutment and the latch, the lift will be secured to the wheelbarrow and they will move together as a unit.
Secured to the base of the lift there are spaced vertically disposed tubular members 35 that are secured together by crossbars 36 to form a rigid frame. This frame is fixed to the base by means of a bracket 37 that is also fixed to the lower one of the crossbars 36 thereby uniting them together as an integral unit. Secured to the bracket there is a foot bearing housing 38 for rotatably retaining a rotatable elevating screw 39. The elevating screw is between and parallel to the tubular member. The elevating screw is rotatably retained in the foot bearing and detained from sliding up or down in relation to the foot bearing, the base and the tubular members.
Secured to another frame 40 there are threaded nuts 41 that move up and down with the other frame when the elevating screw is rotated within the nuts. Rotating the elevating screws by means of a crank handle 42 will cause the other frame 40 to move up and/or down in relation to the frame composed of the tubular members and the base. Secured and fixed in the frame 40 and movable with it are vertically disposed slide bars 43 that are slidably retained in the tubular members 35. The frame 40 with the slide bars and threaded nuts move up and down in relation and separately from the tubular members, the elevating screw and the base. Secured to and fixed to the bottom of the frame 40 there are projecting tines for carrying pallets of bricks and/or building blocks.
To stabilize the upper part of the lift with the wheelbarrow there are tie bars 44 that removably secure the lift and wheelbarrow together. 1
To secure my lift to the wheelbarrow the tongue is slid into the rectangular receptacle. The threaded hand wheel is rotated and its rotation will bring the slot in the latch into engagement with a right side upper edge of the rectangular receptacle. Simultaneously, an upper left side edge of the rectangular receptacle will be brought into engagement in the slot in the abutment. The hand wheel is turned until the gripping of the top side of the receptacle is secured in both slots. In this condition the lift will be secured to the wheelbarrow.
In use the tines on the lift are lowered by turning the elevating screw. The tines are than placed underneath a pallet loaded with bricks. To lift the pallet with the bricks the elevating screw is rotated and it raises the frame with the brick loaded tines. The clutch is engaged with the driven sprocket and the wheelbarrow with the lift is then moved to a desired location on the job.

a chassis supported on rotatable tired wheels disposed on each side of said chassis; an engine secured on said chassis connected to a driving sprocket;
said driving sprocket connected to and driving a driven sprocket;
said driven sprocket rotatable on a shaft for said tired wheels and said shaft rotatable in bearing blocks secured on said chassis;
a clutch slidably retained on said shaft for engagement with said driven sprocket to drive said shaft and tired wheels;
a bifurcated yoke rotatably secured on said chassis and rotatable about a vertical axis relative to a horizontal axis of said chassis;
said bifurcated yoke supporting a single rotatable tired wheel;
handles secured to said chassis to direct the movement of said wheelbarrow together with said lift;
said lift detachably secured to said chassis and movable with said wheelbarrow;
said lift having a frame slidable up and down in relation to said chassis and a base of said lift;
tines secured at the bottom of said frame for supporting and transporting a pallet of brick;
said frame slidably retained in tubular members that are fixed to and integral with the base for said lift;
said base for said lift secured on spaced swivel casters facilitating movement of said lift with said wheelbarrow;
an elevating screw, rotatably retained in a foot bearing, in-
hibited from vertical movement in relation to said base and tubular members;
,said foot bearing secured and fixed to said base, inhibited from movement in relation to said tubular members; threaded nuts secured on said frame and movable therewith; said nuts and frame being movable longitudinally of said elevating screw and said base when said elevating screw is rotated; and
said wheelbarrow and lift secured together to transport mortar and a load of brick simultaneously. 2. A power-driven wheelbarrow with a manual operable lift for transporting mortar and brick as set forth in claim 1 com- 5 prising:
a tongue extending horizontally from said base;
said tongue detachably secured within a rectangular receptacle secured on said chassis;
a slot, in an abutment, fixed on an upper surface of said tongue, detachably engaging an upper edge of said rectangular receptacle;
another slot, in a latch, rotatably mounted on said tongue for engaging another edge of said rectangular receptacle to detachably retain said rectangular section within and between said slots, and;
a slidable threaded drawbar rotatably secured to said latch to draw said latch into engagement withsaid other edge; and
said drawbar having a threaded hand wheel to rotate said latch and clamp said rectangular section between said slots to removably secure said wheelbarrow and lift together.
3. A power-driven wheelbarrow with manual operable lift for transporting mortar and brick as set forth in claim 1 wherein said lift detachably secured to said chassis and movable with said wheelbarrow further comprises:
detachable means for securing said lift to said wheelbarrow;
said detachable means having an extension on said base for removably securing said lift to said wheelbarrow;
latch means clamping said lift to said wheelbarrow; and
means on said extension for rotating said latch means to removably secure said lift to said wheelbarrow.

Claims (3)

1. A power-driven wheelbarrow with a manual operable lift for transporting mortar and brick comprising: a chassis supported on rotatable tired wheels disposed on each side of said chassis; an engine secured on said chassis connected to a driving sprocket; said driving sprocket connected to and driving a driven sprocket; said driven sprocket rotatable on a shaft for said tired wheels and said shaft rotatable in bearing blocks secured on said chassis; a clutch slidably retained on said shaft for engagement with said driven sprocket to drive said shaft and tired wheels; a bifurcated yoke rotatably secured on said chassis and rotatable about a vertical axis relative to a horizontal axis of said chassis; said bifurcated yoke supporting a single rotatable tired wheel; handles secured to said chassis to direct the movement of said wheelbarrow together with said lift; said lift detachably secured to said chassis and movable with said wheelbarrow; said lift having a frame slidable up and down in relation to said chassis and a base of said lift; tines secured at the bottom of said frame for supporting and transporting a pallet of brick; said frame slidably retained in tubular members that are fixed to and integral with the base for said lift; said base for said lift secured on spaced swivel casters facilitating movement of said lift with said wheelbarrow; an elevating screw, rotatably retained in a foot bearing, inhibited from vertical movement in relation to said base and tubular members; said foot bearing secured and fixed to said base, inhibited from movement in relation to said tubular members; threaded nuts secured on said frame and movable therewith; said nuts and frame being movable longitudinally of said elevating screw and said base when said elevating screw is rotated; and said wheelbarrow and lift secured together to transport mortar and a load of brick simultaneously.
2. A power-driven wheelbarrow with a manual operable lift for transporting mortar and brick as set forth in claim 1 comprising: a tongue extending horizontally from said base; said tongue detachably secured within a rectangular receptacle secured on said chassis; a slot, in an abutment, fixed on an upper surface of said tongue, detachably engaging an upper edge of said rectangular receptacle; another slot, in a latch, rotatably mounted on said tongue for engaging another edge of said rectangular receptacle to detachably retain said rectangular section within and between said slots, and; a slidable threaded drawbar rotatably secured to said latch to draw said latch into engagement with said other edge; and said drawbar having a threaded hand wheel to rotate said latch and clamp said rectangular section between said slots to removably secure said wheelbarrow and lift together.
3. A power-driven wheelbarrow with manual operable lift for transporting mortar and brick as set forth in claim 1 wherein said lift detachably secured to said chassis and movable with said wheelbarrow further comprises: detachable means for securing said lift to said wheelbarrow; said detachable means having an extension on said base for removably securing said lift to said wheelbarrow; latch means clamping said lift to said wheElbarrow; and means on said extension for rotating said latch means to removably secure said lift to said wheelbarrow.
