Each end wall has one or more ribs which extend to the bottom lip which serve as guide members. The removable cover has a top wall and spaced downwardly extending end walls which have an inwardly extending lip adjacent the bottom. The cover is adapted to be positioned on the base member so that the top wall of the cover extends over the top of the base member and the end walls of the cover are adjacent the exterior of the end walls of the base member, with the lips of the end walls of the cover riding over the rib or ribs on the end walls of the base member as same is moved into position and the lips engage the bottom of the base member to detachably lock the cover to the base member.

[22] Filed July 14, 1969 [45] Patented Feb. 16, 1971 [73] Assignee Morris Nozette [54] DISPLAY BOXES 220/U-shape Primary Examiner-Donald F. Norton Assistant ExaminerRichard Wagner Attorney-Max R. Kraus ABSTRACT: A display box molded of a plastic material comprising a base member and a removable cover, with the base member having a bottom, spaced sides, end walls, and an open top. The bottom extends outwardly of the end walls so that it forms a lip exteriorly of the end walls adjacent the bottom of the end walls.
DISPLAY BOXES BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION One of the objects of this invention is to provide a display box formed of a base member which is integrally molded of a plastic material, and a separate cover member which is formed of a plastic material. The base member and the cover are constructed so that the cover is readily secured to the base member and detachably removed therefrom. The cover is in effect positioned in relation to the base member so as to snap onto the base member to securely lock said cover against accidental unlocking and yet may be readily removed from the base member when so desired.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is an exploded perspective forming this invention; I
FIG. 2 is a view partly in section showing the cover secured to the base member; j
FIG. 3 is a view taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 2; and
FIG. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of FIG. 2.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION The display box as shown in the drawings is formed of a base member generally indicated at and a removable cover generally indicated at 12. Each is formed of a plastic material and injection molded.
The base member 10 comprises a bottom 14, a pair of spaced sidewalls l6 and a pair of spaced end walls 18 formed to provide an open top 20. The spaced end walls have a slight outward inclination from the top towards the bottom. The bottom of the end walls are spaced inwardly from the end of the bottom to define lips 22 extending exteriorly of the bottom of the end walls 18. t
A pair of spaced guide ribs 24 are formed on the end walls 18. Said ribs extend to the bottom lip 22 and are flush with the exterior surface of the lip. The ribs 24 are perpendicular to the lip 22 and the ribs are inclined and merge into the outwardly extending lip at the bottom.
The ends of the sidewalls 16 extend outwardly beyond the end walls 18 and have a slight outward inclination from the top to the bottom. The sidewalls 16 have a longitudinally extending shoulder 26 on the inside thereof which is planar with the top 18' of the end walls 18. The base member thus may be integrally molded of a plastic material, such as styrene, in a plastic injection molding machine and ispreferably opaque.
The removable cover 12 is preferably formed of a transparent plastic material, such as styrene, and is injection molded. The removable cover has'a top 28 and a pair of spaced downwardly extending end walls 30 which slope outwardly from the top towards the bottom. Extending inwardly at the bottom of the end walls are inwardly extending short lips 32, the ends of which are rounded as at 34 or provided with a radius. The lip 32 may be formed as a bead or the like.
view of the display box The removable cover is readily secured to the base member by positioning it over the open surface of the base member. with the inwardly extending lips 32 of the cover engaging the vertical guide ribs 24 on the end walls 18 of the base member,
5 and by pressing the cover down the lips 32 on the removable cover will ride over said ribs and after the lips 32 pass over the guide ribs the end walls of the cover will snap into locking engagement with the underside of the lips 22 of the base member. The top 28 of the cover will rest on the longitudinal shoulders 26 of the sides 16 of the base member. The cover is thus securely locked to the base member and forms a display box for articles which are positioned in the box.
By virtue of the construction shown, both the cover and the base member may be inexpensively molded, each as a single integral unit in an injection molding machine, effecting great economy in the production of such a box and, further, the locking arrangement is such that the cover is positively locked to the base member and is prevented from being accidentally removed therefrom, but may be removed manually by applying a slight pressure against one of the end walls of the cover and lifting it so that it rides over the vertical ribs 24 of the base member.
We claim:
1. A display box molded of a plastic material comprising, a base member and a removable cover, said base member having a bottom and spaced side and end walls and an open top, said bottom extending slightly outwardly of the end walls to thereby define a lip extending outwardly of the end walls, a rib on said end walls extending perpendicular to said lip and outwardly of the end walls, said removable cover having a top wall and spaced downwardly extending end walls and an inwardly extending lip adjacent the bottom of said end walls, said cover adapted to be positioned on said base member so that the top of the cover extends over the open top of the base member and the end walls of the cover are adjacent the exterior of the end walls of the base member with the lip of the cover riding over the rib and engaging the bottom of the base member to detachably lock the cover to said base member.
2. A display box as set forth in claim 1 in which the end walls of the base member are inclined at an angle and the end walls of the cover are inclined at an angle.
3. A display box as set forth in claim 1 in which the end walls of the base member slope outwardly from the top to the bottom and in which the end walls of the cover slope outwardly from the top to the bottom.
4. A display box as set forth in claim 1 in which the rib on the end wall of the base member merges into the lip at the base of the end wall of the base member.
5. A display box as set forth in claim 1 in which the sides of the base member have a shoulder spaced from the top on which the top of the cover rests.
6. A display box as set forth in claim 1 in which the end walls of base member are provided with a plurality of spaced guide ribs.
7. A display box as set forth in claim 1 in which the cover is molded of a transparent material.
