Abstract

This invention consists of an internally threaded vertically disposed hollow receptacle adapted to receive the lower end of a portable gasoline pump that may be of the manually operated type. The aforesaid receptacle has its lower end provided with a hollow rectangular member having an externally threaded shoulder located in the vertical center thereof. The just mentioned shoulder is provided with a nut that rests on top of the gasoline drum to which the pump is secured by means of this novel invention. Two diametrically opposed U-shaped members, which I personally call dogs, each has its vertical portion passing through the aforesaid shoulder. The upper end of each dog is in the form of a handle by which the dog can be rotated to lock the device in place on the gasoline drum since the lower end of each dog terminates in a horizontally disposed member adapted to fit under the inside of the drum when the dog is turned to a locked position, thus locking the gasoline pump to the drum.

Sturm ABSTRACT: This invention consists of an internally threaded vertically disposed hollow receptacle adapted to receive the lower end of a portable gasoline pump that may be of the manually operated type. The aforesaid. receptacle has its lower end provided with a hollow rectangular member having an externally threaded shoulder located in the vertical center thereof. The just mentioned shoulder is provided with a nut that rests on top of the gasoline drum to which the pump is secured by means of this novel invention. Two diametrically opposed U-shaped members, which I personally call dogs, each has its vertical portion passing through the aforesaid shoulder. The upper end of each dog is in the form of a handle by which the dog can be rotated to lock the device in place on the gasoline drum since the lower end of each dog terminates in a horizontally disposed member adapted to fit under the inside of the drum when the dog is turned to a locked position, thus locking the gasoline pump to the drum.

It is the principal object of this invention to provide a lock for gasoline pumps that will firmly lock the pump to nearly any gasoline drum in a minimum or time and with a minimum of effort without the use of specific tools.
Another object of this invention is to provide a lock for gasoline pumps that will make it possible for one to change pumps on the drum without having to turn the pump to remove the device from the drum.
Still another object of this invention is to provide alock for gasoline pumps that may also be use for pumping liquids other than gasoline from drums or the like having a'wall or head of any thickness, as will hereinafter be described.
Other and furtherobjects and advantages of this invention will no doubt appear as the reading of this specification and its appended claims proceeds in connection with an examination .of the accompanying drawing in which: I

Directing ones attention first at FIG. 2 of the accompanying drawing it will be seen that this lock for a gasoline pump consists of a hollow member 11 having internal threads 12 adapted to receive the external threads of the lower portion of I a gasoline pump. The pump is not shown in any of the views of the drawing since it is not an actual part of this invention. The bottom 13, of the aforesaid hollow member 11, is provided with a vertically disposed hollow rectangular member 14 which is provided with a shoulder 15 having external threads 16 which screw into the nut 17 that is located on top of the gasoline drum [8.
Continuing to look at FIG. 2 of the drawing it will be seen that the aforesaid shoulder 15'is provided with two diametrically opposed U-shaped dogs 19, Each dog has a handle 20 on the upper end of a vertically disposed member 21 which passes through an opening in the aforesaid shoulder 15 to terminate in a horizontally disposed member 22 that is of a length sufficient to extend in under theunderside of the wall of the aforesaid drum [8 when the dog I9 is rotated in the locked position shown in FIG. 2. The lower end of the aforesaid hollow rectangular member 14 is provided with a suitable internally threaded hollow fitting 23 in which is screwed a pipe (not shown in the drawing) that extends downward into the drum for the receptionof the gasoline or other liquid that is to be pumped from the drum."
Although not previously. mentioned, it is obvious from examination of the accompanying drawing, and particularly of FIGS. 1 and 2, that this device fits :in part into an opening in the drum that is known in the art as. the bunghole which must naturally be large enough to permit the insertion of the aforesaid shoulder 15 portion of this invention into the bunghole. t
The phantom lines in FIG. 3 of the accompanying drawing clearly illustrate the rotated position of each of the two aforesaid horizontally disposed members 22 of the U-shaped dogs 19 in order that the device can be removed from the gasoline drum l8.
It will be realized on examination of FIG. 2 of the accompanying drawing that this invention will fit on any drum regardless of the thickness of the wall or end of the drum since the aforesaid nut 17 can be screwed up or down on the external threads 16 of the shoulder 15 of this invention. Obviously,
the rotating of the lgust mentioned nut 17 will raise or lower the entire lock and t e pump secured thereto, thereby placing pressure on the underside of the aforesaid U-shaped dogs 19. The pressure on the dogs 19 will naturally be transmitted to the upper surface of the aforesaid horizontally disposed members 22 of the dogs. The members 22 press up under the wall of the aforesaid drum 18, as will be understood by anyone experienced in the art if they examine the aforesaid FIG. 2 of the drawing, thereby firmly holding the lock and pump in the desired position on the aforesaid drum 18.
It is to be understood that this invention is subject to any and all changes in detail design and/or modifications that one may care to make in the same in so long as the changes and/or modifications fall within the scope and intent of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A device for locking a gasoline pump to a gasoline drum comprising:
a wall having an opening therein;
a tubular member extending through said opening;
a support member surrounding and sealingly engaging a portion of said tubular member within said opening; and locking means for releasably attaching said support member to said wall including at least one U-shaped dog having a center portion thereof pivotally attached to said support member; an end portion of said dog engaging a surface of said wall in one pivotal position thereof and being free to pass through said opening in another pivotal position thereof; and a nut member threaded to said support member adjacent an opposite surface of said wall for adjusting said locking means to the thickness of said wall.
2. The invention of claim 1, wherein the center portion of each of said U-shaped dogs extends downward through an opening through the support membezn'the upper end of each of said U-shaped dogs terminating in a handle.
3. The invention of claim 2, wherein the tubular member is a vertically disposed hollow rectangular member, the lower end thereof being provided with an internally threaded fitting in which is screwed a pipe through which the contents of the said gasoline drum is pumped as the said pipe extends downward nearly to the bottom of the said gasoline drum.

Claims (3)

1. A device for locking a gasoline pump to a gasoline drum comprising: a wall having an opening therein; a tubular member extending through said opening; a support member surrounding and sealingly engaging a portion of said tubular member within said opening; and locking means for releasably attaching said support member to said wall including at least one U-shaped dog having a center portion thereof pivotally attached to said support member; an end portion of said dog engaging a surface of said wall in one pivotal position thereof and being free to pass through said opening in another pivotal position thereof; and a nut member threaded to said support member adjacent an opposite surface of said wall for adjusting said locking means to the thickness of said wall.
2. The invention of claim 1, wherein the center portion of each of said U-shaped dogs extends downward through an opening through the support member, the upper end of each of said U-shaped dogs terminating in a handle.
3. The invention of claim 2, wherein the tubular member is a vertically disposed hollow rectangular member, the lower end thereof being provided with an internally threaded fitting in which is screwed a pipe through which the contents of the said gasoline drum is pumped as the said pipe extends downward nearly to the bottom of the said gasoline drum.
