DEVICE FOR REMOVING THE STARTING END OF A COIL-WOUND TEXTILE YARN FROM THE BORE OF A CORE ON WHICH THE COIL IS WOUND My invention relates to device for removing the starting end of a coil-wound textile yarn from the bore of a core on which the coil is wound. Such removal ls generally effected by suction in order to ready the coil for further processing in a spinning or other textile machine.
In U.S. Pat. No. 3,295,775 of which I am coinventor, it was proposed to remove by suction the starting end of a yarn wound on a textile coil or cop which is disposed in the bore of a hollow core on which the yarn coil is wound. The device disclosed in this earlier patent has the disadvantage, however, that removal of the yarn end can be effected with the required reliability only if the hollow-bore of the coil core or the yarn is completely smooth. When conditions are undesirable i.e. the interior surface of the core or the surface of the yarn is rough, the suction power applied must be increased many times over.
It is accordingly an object of my invention to provide device for removing the starting end of a coil-wound textile yarn from the bore of a core on which the coil is wound which avoids the aforementioned disadvantage of the heretofore known devices of this general type.
More particularly, it is an object of my invention to provide such device which will reliably remove the yarn end, with a resonable outlay of suction power from hollow cores having an inner rough or damaged surface or a surface formed with an undesirable flange around it which tends to hold the yarn end firmly within the bore of the hollow core.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, I provide in accordance with my invention, device for removing the starting end of a coil-wound textile yarn or thread from the bore of a core on which the coil is wound, comprising suction tube means having an opening alignable with the bore of a coil core at one end of the core, a funnel-shaped member having a downwardly tapering end portion and an outwardly flaring end, the outwardly flaring end being formed with an opening alignable with the bore of the coil at the other end of the core, and means for producing a whirling air current located in the downwardly tapering end portion of the funnel-shaped member.
By a whirling air current there is meant both a turbulent flow as well as a flow that runs spirally or helically about the axis of the core. Consequently, the forces exerted by the air current on the yarn are applied not only in the longitudinal direction of the yarn but also transversely thereto so that any snags or catches can be readily loosened.
In accordance with a further feature of my invention, I provide rotatably mounted guide vanes in the downwardly tapering end portion of the funnel-shaped member as the means for producing the whirling air current. It is also possible, in accordance with yet another feature of the invention, to provide the guide vanes with a jalousielike mounting so that they are adjustable for example in accordance with the suction or negative pressure.
In accordance with a further feature of my invention, the means for producing the whirling air current comprises a plurality of air inlet passages formed in the downwardly tapering end portion of the funnel-shaped member and directed toward the opening at the outwardly flaring end of the member, the air inlet passages extending tangentially to the inner surface of the member. The funnel-shaped member is closed at the downwardly tapered end thereof for example, by means of a substantially conical insert.
Other features which are considered as characteristic for the invention are set forth in the appended claims.
Although the invention is illustrated and described herein as embodied in device for removing the starting end of a coilwound textile yarn from the bore of a core on which the coil is wound, it is nevertheless not intended to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope and range of equivalents of the claims.
The construction of operation of the invention. however. together with additional objects and advantages thereof will be best understood from the following description of specific embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a longitudinal view partly in section of the device of my invention wherein a textile coil is being subjected to suetion for removing a yarn starting end from the hollow core thereof;
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the funnel-shaped member contain ing guide vanes in accordance with one embodiment of the invention;
FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the downwardly tapering end portion of the funnel-shaped member formed with air inlet passages in accordance with another embodiment of my invention; and
FIG. 4 is an axial view of the funnel-shaped member of FIG. 3 with part of a textile coil positioned thereon in accordance with the invention.
Referring now to the drawing and first particularly to FIG. 1 thereof, there is shown a textile coil 6 which, in the manner described in the aforementioned U.S. Pat. No. 3,295,775 has arrived on a slideway 7 of a textile machine. Reference may also be had to U.S. Pat. No. 3,1 1 1,280 of Walter Reiners et al. for example, for further and better understanding of the state of the art and for further description of the various structural elements present in a textile machine with which the invention of the instant application may be used.
As seen in FIG. 1, a suction tube 10 has a suction opening that is disposed directly above the tip 9 of the coil core. An arm 11 extends from the suction tube 10 and is articulatingly connected to an actuating lever 12 which can swing the suction tube 10 into a disengaging position in the direction of the associated curved arrow so as to permit other coils 6 to be slid sequentially into position on the slideway 7 after the starting ends of the yarns of the respective preceding coils have been removed from the respective hollow cores thereof, and those preceding coils have then been sequentially removed from the slideway 7. The textile coil 6 has a core foot 8 which is received in the outwardly flaring open end of a funnelshaped member I. As shown in FIG. I, the yarn end 15 disposed in the bore 14 of the hollow core has already been partly removed by the suction tube 10. The funnel-shaped member 1 is connected to a bell crank I6, 17 turnably mounted on a pivot shaft 18 and can be swung in the direction of the curved arrow 16a by means of the actuating lever 19 after the removal of the yarn end by suction. Thus, the coil 6 can slide down the slideway 7 to a new station for further processing and can be replaced at the illustrated station with a new coil 6, from the hollow core of which, the respective yarn end is to be removed.
As shown in FIG. 2, guide vanes 2 are disposed in the downwardly tapering end portion 5 of the funnel-shaped member 1. These guide vanes 2 are advantageously of helical construction as, for example, are the blades of ventilators or fans. Moreover, these vanes 2 can be so mounted as to be tiltable like jalousies to provide a gradation of the air-whirling action and to be adjustable in accordance with the suction or negative pressure. This adjustment can either be effected directly in dependence on the negative pressure or the air velocity corresponding thereto or directly in dependence on the adjustment of the negative pressure or the rotary speed of the nonillustrated blower producing the suction air current drawn through the suction tube 10. The guide vanes 2 may also be rotatably mounted so as to reinforce the whirling action imparted to the air current.
In the embodiment of FIG. 3, there is shown the foot 8 of the core of a textile coil 6 which rests on the outwardly flaring end of the funnel-shaped member 1. To prevent the formation of a laminar air flow in the funnel-shaped member 1, the latter is closed at its narrow end 5 and the wall of the funnel-shaped member is formed with a number of air inlet passages 3 directed toward the opening at the outwardly flaring end of the member 1 and extending transversely to the inner surface of the member 1 Advantageously. the narrow end 5 of the funnel-shaped member 1 is closed by a substantially conically shaped insert 4 which additionally serves as a guide for the air flowing into the funnel-shaped member 1 through the tangentially disposed passages 3.
Because of the novel and inventive construction of the funnel-shaped member 1. the air current produced with the suction tube does not pass through the hollow core of the textile coil 6 with a laminar flow path but is rather strongly whirled about. The yarn or thread disposed in the bore of the hollow core is thereby seized more firmly and held more strongly. This relatively violent movement of the yarn promotes better loosening thereof from the inner wall surface of the hollow core and permits reliable removal of the yarn end proper even when the yarn is of the type having a great tendency to cling or adhere to the wall surface.

2. Device according to claim 1 wherein said means for producing a whirling air current comprises a plurality of guide VLU'ICS.
3. Device according to claim 2 wherein said guide vanes are rotatably mounted in said downwardly tapering end portion of said funnel-shaped member.
4. Device according to claim 2 wherein said guide vanes are mounted so as to be pivotable like jalousies.
5. Device according to claim 4 whereinsaid guide vanes are mounted so as to be pivotable in dependence on the negative pressure in said funnel-shaped member.
6. Device according to claim 1 wherein said funnel-shaped member is closed at the narrow end of said downwardly tapering end portion thereof, the wall of said downwardly tapering end portion being formed with a plurality of air inlet passages directed toward said outwardly flaring end and extending tangentially to the inner surface of said tapering end portion.
7. Device according to claim 6 wherein said narrow end of said downwardly tapering end portion is closed by a substantially conical insert.

Claims (7)

1. Device for removing the starting end of a coil-wound textile yarn from the bore of a core on which the coil is wound, comprising suction tube means having an opening alignable with the bore of a coil core at one end of the core, a funnel-shaped member having a downwardly tapering end portion and an outwardly flaring end, said outwardly flaring end being formed with an opening alignable with the bore of the coil core at the other end of the core, and means for producing a whirling air current located in the downwardly tapering end portion of said funnelshaped member.
2. Device according to claim 1 wherein said means for producing a whirling air current comprises a plurality of guide vanes.
3. Device according to claim 2 wherein said guide vanes are rotatably mounted in said downwardly tapering end portion of said funnel-shaped member.
4. Device according to claim 2 wherein said guide vanes are mounted so as to be pivotable like jalousies.
5. Device according to claim 4 wherein said guide vanes are mounted so as to be pivotable in dependence on the negative pressure in said funnel-shaped member.
6. Device according to claim 1 wherein said funnel-shaped member is closed at the narrow end of said downwardly tapering end portion thereof, the wall of said downwardly tapering end portion being formed with a plurality of air inlet passages directed toward said outwardly flaring end and extending tangentially to the inner surface of said tapering end portion.
7. Device accorDing to claim 6 wherein said narrow end of said downwardly tapering end portion is closed by a substantially conical insert.
