Description
` UNITED 'STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VALTER N. LOWELL, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOF TO THE WATERBURY BRASS COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CARTRIDGE-PRI MER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.355,8 77, dated January 11, 1887.
Application filed May 24, 1886.
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, WALTER N. LOWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartridge-Primers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
" My invention relates to improvements in that class of ammunition known as cartridgeprimers, and which are provided in the interior thereof with a suitable anvil' and fulminating compound, whereby said primer is exploded in the pocket of the metallic head of a metallicl or paper shell in a. manner well known.
' Heretofore much difficulty has been experienced in the construction of such class of primers, owing to thefact that when the primer is struck into shape small prolongations or irregular ragged projections are left at the lower edges of the same, which prevent the primer from resting uniformly on all portions of the pocket, and which not unfrequently cause the bottom of the pocket to be pierced through, rendering the shell unfit for reloading or repriming. Furthermore, the irregular length of the primer prevents it from resting in the pocket at the proper distance from the outer surface thereof', rendering one side of the primer liable to project above the same a sufficient distance to cause a premature discharge of the shell by the sudden closing of thebreech of the gun against such projecting end.
My improvements have for their object to obviate the abov'efmentioned imperfections and to furnish a primer which will be efficient and reliable at all times.
Serial No. 203.082A (No model.)
To these ends my invention consists, essen-,45 tially, in trimming the lower edges ol' the primer in such manner as to make the same of one exact and uniform length, and to securea beveled or rounded edge to the outer lower portion thereof, to adapt the same to tit snugly and uniformly within the pocket of the shell, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically designated in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing the gure represented is an enlarged sectional View of my improved primer in position within the pocket of a shell.
Similar letters of `reference indicate like parts.
vIn carrying out my invention the metallic primer A is first struck up into the usual form. The usual fulminate, foil, and metallic anvil are then successively adjusted within said primer. The lower edges of the primer are then cut or trimmed, by means of asuitable tool or tools, to one exact or uniform length, and the lower outer edge finally beveled or rounded inwardly to produce the completed article, as shown in the drawing.
The primer constructed according to my invention rests snugly and uniformly within the pocket of the cartridge-head, with its upper and lower surfaces in a true line with the depth of said pocket.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and useful- 'A new article of manufacture consisting of a cartridge-primer having its inner walls straight, and its inner edge beveled orrounded outward and adapted to fit in tightly in the inner rounded edge of a pocket formed in the shell, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
` W'ALTER N. LOWELL.
