SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,397, dated January, 4-, 1887.

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HURLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Coffey and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon,
which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide a novel and simplified construction in elevators to be operated by hand, by means of which grain or other objects are raised and lowered from one elevation to another solely by a crank movement worked by the operator upon the same; and it consists in certain novel features, especially in the arrangement of the draftropes, by means of which the desired result is obtained. Referring to the drawings, A represents the movable platform, of any shape or configuration desired, and carrying upon each side and rigidly secured thereto two uprights, a a,
which form hearings or supports for the shafts B B, forming drums for receiving the ropes when wound upon them. To the inner side of the shafts B B is rigidly secured the doublecrank shaft, terminating into two handles, 1) b, by means of which the drums secured to the shafts are revolved.
O Orepresent two ratchet-wheels, secured to the outer ends of the said shafts, whichcome in contact with the pawls D D, for the purpose of holding the elevator in any desired position or height, at the will of the operator.
To each corner of the platform A are secured rings d, to which the branch ropes E are attached and secured to the main ropes F, which extend upward over pulleys or drums ff, mortised in the joists of the ceiling, and downward over pulleys ec, secured to the platform of the elevator, and'thence upward and attached to the shafts B B, upon which the said ropes are wound by the motion of the crank-shaft. q
In the operation of the elevator it will be observed that the operator, by turning the double-crank shaft, revolves the shafts attached thereto and winds upon the same the ropes which raise and lower the elevator.
Havingthus described myinvcntion, I cla m and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a hand-elevator, the combination of the movable platform A, having uprights a a, carrying the shafts or drums B B, the crankshaft provided with handles 1) b, the ratchetwheels 0 O, and pawls D D, the branch ropes E, and the main ropes F, passing over pulleys ff and e c, as and for the purpose described.
2. In a hand-elevator, the combination of 70 the draft-ropes F F, secured to the movable platform A, and passing upward over pulleys or drums f f, mortised in the joists of theceiling, and downward over pulleys e e, secured within the said platform, and upward over 7 and secured to the shafts or drums B B, provided with thedouble-crank shaft carrying handles 12 b, and the ratchet-wheels O O and pawls D D, as and for the purpose described.
