IMPROVEMENT IN STONE AND GLASS POLISHING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,937, dated July 15, 1873; application filed I April 3, 1873.
' polishing plateglass, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan view of my machine. Fig. 3 represents parts of the device whereby the glass is polished.
A A represent two tables, of any suitable dimensions, each table turning around a center on a platform, B. These tables may be made, the lower part, of cast-iron or wood,
and the surface, on which the glass lies, also of Wood or of cement. The latter is preferable. The tables are held stationary by means of wedges a 6t upon their respective platforms while the glass is being polished. By removing the wedges the table may be turned so as to bring those parts of the glass which have only been touched by the larger blocks of the polishing device under the smaller blocks of the same. Between the tables A A and above the same is hung a swinging frame, 0, the lower part of which may extend down into the room or cellar below the one in which the tables are situated, and is there, by a pitman, D, connected with a crank-wheel, E, on a shaft, b, this shaft and wheel being revolvedby any convenient or desired power. By this means the frame 0 obtains a swinging motion back and forth. On each side of the swinging frame 0, at about on a level with the tables A, in suitable bearings, is placed a horizontal shaft, 11, to which the polishing devices are connected. Each of these devices is composed of a series of small blocks, Gr G, large blocks H H, and metal frames I I, forming a chain, as shown. The small blocks G Gr are placed in the frames I, and these frames, as well as the larger blocks H H, are notched, as shown in Fig. 3, and joined into each other. Each chain thus formed is connected by a frame, J,
to the shaft cl, said frame being provided with a sleeve or socket, 6, through which said shaft passes. There may be as many of these chains as desired on each shaft, and they are connected together and held the proper distance apart by a perforated metal bar, f, fitting over lugs '5 'i, at the inner ends of the frames J the glass. The blocks have a backward and forward motion on the glass, caused by the swinging frame 0, and they have also a side motion, caused by the following means: The shafts d d have screw-threads cut on them, as shown in Fig. 2, and one of the cylinders or sleeves e for each shaft is provided with corresponding female screw-threads, so that by rotating the shaft in one direction the blockchains will gradually move toward one side of the table at the same time as they are being moved back and forth by the swinging frame, and by rotating the shaft in the opposite direction the block-chains will gradually move toward the other side of the table. On one end of one of the shafts cl is secured a double toothed wheel, K, the two sets of teeth on which stand in opposite directions. On the same shaft, and around the wheel K, is placed a T-shaped frame, L, carrying a heavy roller, M, at the outer end of the long arm, and in each of the shorter arms is pivoted a hook or pawl, m, to operate on the double-toothed wheel, K, according to the side on which the roller L is placed. The opposite ends of the two shafts d d are connected by means of cogwheels 12 02. On the floor of the room in which the tables A A are located are placed and secured two steep inclines, N, so that when the .frame L with the roller M is thrown to either side, and the frame 0 in motion, the roller M will travel up and down one of said inclines, and, by means of the pawl an, then at the top turn the toothed wheel K, whereby the screwshafts d d are revolved and the block-chains on each table moved to one side. By throwing the frame L over on the other side the other pawl will operate to rotate the screwshafts in the opposite direction and move the block-chains to the other side of the tables.
When the glass is taken from a table the blocks G and H and frames I are taken off and the frames J raised up and tied to the swinging frame 0, so as not to be in the way or interfere with the workman when taking off or placing glass on a table while the machine is in motion.
More than one swinging frame may be connected with the shaft b, so as to run more than two tables, in the same manner as the first two with the same engine.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The block-chains herein described, consisting of the blocks G G and H H and frames 1, constructed as described, and connected by means of a frame, J, with the screw-shafts 01, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The eombination, with the screw-shafts d d, of the double cog-wheel K, frame L with pawls m m, and roller M, and the double incline N, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the swinging frame 0, screw-shafts d d,block-chains G H I, frames J with pins i i, and the bars f, all constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto set my hand this 7th day of March,
JOSEPH MEISSE.
