L. B. WOOD.
LANTERN.
Patented-Dec. 2 8, 1 886..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUTHER BEOKWITH WOO/D, or OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
LANTERN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,240, dated December 28, 1886.
Application filed June 15, 1886. Serial No. 205,225.
A\VOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns; and I hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same.
My present invention relates to the form of lantern for which Letters Patent of the United States, No. 316,425, were granted. to me on the 21st day of April, 1885. 1
The construction I desire to cover in the present application isidentical with that'shown and described in my said Letters Patent, eX- cept as to the heat-chambers in the. tubes, which I now omit, since the device without them operates more satisfactorily, and affords, as I have discovered by experiment since applying for my aforesaid Letters Patent, a decided improvement upon the device shown and described therein, owing to the tendency of the chambers to accumulate gas and produce explosion, which not only destroys the lantern, but is liable to entail disastrous consequences.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional elevation of my improved lantern; Fig. 2, a side elevation of a portion of the same, showing details; Fig. 3, a sectional plan View taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 a plan view of the burner and oil cup or reservoir of the lantern.
The frame A, globe B, ventilating or draft top 0, and oil cup or reservoir D, with the base D, may be of the'usual or of any improved construction.
'ner to cause the lower bent portions to lie within the oil-cup and extend nearly to the bottom of the same, thus presenting a comparatively large surface for contact with the (No model.)
oil. The shorter arms, 6', of the tubes E project a short distance beyond the upper surface of the top d, through the latter in line with the wick-tubes f and on opposite sides of the same, and are provided with short pipes or tubes 1), bent, as shown, toward their upper extremities and provided with flaring months a, to extend above the wick-tubes. The longer arms, 6, extend vertically through the globe B to or into the draft-top O, and thereby serve as chimneys to create the draft necessary to draw the heat from the flame at the wick-tubes through the tubes 12 down and up through the tubes E, and thereby heat the contents of the oil-cup.
The tubes 1) are not rigid in their positions upon the projecting ends of the shorter arms, 0, of the tubes E, but are adjusted in any suitable manner (by simply seating them as shown, if desired) to permit the flaring months 0 to be turned toward and from the flame, and thus 7 permit the temperature of the oil to be regulated by controlling the degree of heat introduced through the oil-cup.
The heating of the oil renders its combustion perfect to an extent that tends to prevent smoke, and thus the globe B is kept clear.
I am aware of a lamp provided with a bent tube, the bent portion being within the oilchamber and the short arm of the tube having a bellmouth extending over the wick-tube. I i
of the lantern and a drafttop, the combination, with the oil-cup and draft-top, of continuous tubes E, bent to form arms 6, extending to the upper part of the lantern adjacent to the draft-top, and shorter arms, 0, extending through the top of the oil-cup, the bent portions of the tubes being within the oil-cup,
