E. H. ROUSSEAU. BUGKBOARDWAGON.
No. 355,215. Paten-5551555. z8, 1885.
l UNITED t STATES PATENT OEETCE.
EDOUARD HEROUL ROUSSEAU, OFAGRANBY, QUEBEC, CANADA.
BUoKBoARo-WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part o Letters Patent No. 355,215, dated December 28, 1886. Application tiled December 4. 1885. Serial No. 184.699. (Ncmudel.) Patented in Canada July 2, 1885, No. 21,955.
To all whom/z5 may concern:
Be it known that I, EDOUARD HEEoUL ROUSSEAU, asubjectof Our Sovereign Lady Queen Victoria, Queen of theUnited Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, &c., residing at the village of Granby, in the county of Sheft'ord and Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, have invented some new and needful Improvements in Buckboard and Buggy Vagons, (for which I have received Letters Patent'in the Dominion of Canada, No. 21,955, dated July 2, 1885;) and I do hereby declare that ,the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make the same, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 isa downward view upon the Wagongear of mysaid invention. Fig. 2 is an isometrical projectionof the said invention.v
The first part of my invention consists in the method of the attachment to the seat of the slats which form the board in buckboardwagons.77 This method is anirnprovement on the old plan of carrying these straight through from the rocker to the hind axle of the wagon.
This method also cmbines the advantages of side springs with buckboard-gear,with none of their drawbacks.
The second part of my invention is the attachment of the foot-rod, which, balancing the springs of the gear, prevents that jar upon the foot-rod which causes numbness in the feet and ankles of persons riding i-n an ordinary buckboard-wagon.
A, Fig. 1, is a frame of hard wood. It is joined at the corners, as shown. On the frame the seat rests, being hinged in front.
To the frame are fasten/ed slats a, in front and behind the seat. Their outside ends are straight. Their inside ends are bent upward, where they are attached to the seat-frame, and where they are fastened by bolts and screws, as shown. The two outside bolts run through the seat-frame, and thereby strengthen it. The outside ends are bolted to the rocker and the axle.
Beginning at the rocker on each side end, bolted toit under the slats at the sides are two steel springs one-fourth of an inch thick by one v them under the seat-frame. They then take the curve of the slats behind the seat-frame, and are fastened with bolts to the axle. -They act to strengthen the gear, which can sustain any suitable weight withoutbreaking, for when the bent piecesthemselves springs-are pressed downward by any weight or sudden impact upon the seat the steel springs bend also. If the weight or force of impact be strong enough to straighten the steel springs,-l
they then bear in a straight line from their bolted ends and hold the rocker and axle, so that the wooden springs can be bent no more. On top of these bent pieces, in front of the seat! frame, rests the foot-rod attachment. This is the second part of my invention. It is made up of steel springs one-fourth of aninch thick by one and onefourth inch wide, c c, Figs. 1 and 2. These springs follow the direction of the curve of the bent pieces a little way, and
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a buckboard, of the steel springs B`B, independent of the seat, secured at one end to the rocker and at the rot-her to the hind axle, with. the bent pieces a a, sub.
stantiall y as shown and described.
2. The combination, in a buckboard, of the springs c c and cross-slats cl d, secured to said springs c c, with the bent pieces a a, substantially as set'forth.
3. In a buckboard-wagon, the combination of the springs B B, bent pieces a a, and seat- `frame A, with thesprings c c and foot-bar. D,
all arranged substantially as and for the purpose shown and described:
Granby, Province of Quebec, this 16th day of October, 1885.
EDOUARD HERCUL ROUSSEAU.
