CUTTINGV OIR SEVERING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,136, dated December 28, 1.886.
Application iilod July 23, 1885. Serial No. 172,478. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH A. BUNNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cutting and Severing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices or apparatus for cutting or severing, and the nature and object of this invention are to enable the cutting or severing to be rapidly and easily performed.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure lis a front view of the cutting or severing device. Fig. 2 is a section in the plane :v x, Fig. 1,. Fig. 3 is a front view on a larger scale than Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the cutting or severing device. Fig. 5 is a section in the plane y y, Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a` detail view of t-he presser rod or arm and its adjacent parts.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a The supporting-frame A may rest upon a table, C, or other suitable base. The frame A supports two arms, A3, carrying aledger-blade,A*. The arms A3 support a guide, H, which in the example shown in the drawings consists of a rod. Along this guide travels the cutter-carrier H. The cutter-carrier H is shown as being providedwith a perforation, through which the guide H passes, and the cutter-carrier H" rests loosely on the guide H, so that the carrier `H can easily move back and forth.
The cutter or severing device H2 of the drawings is a rotary severing device. The shaft h of the severing device H2 rests in the carrier H, said carrier H having a perforation or recess for the reception of the shaft h. The severing device or cutter H2 can be held to the shaft 71, by a nut, h', so as to leave the cutter H2 free to rotate. The cutter H2 can be rotated by a pulley, h2, with which pulley engages a cord, strap, or chain, h3. The cord, rope, or chain h3 is secured at each end to arms A or to other convenient parts of the device. The rope or chain h3 also passes around guide-pul leys l, which are mounted on studslgor other convenient parts ofthe carrier H. A presserrod, h", forces the cutter H2 into contact with the ledger-bladeA. The presser-rod h6 passes through bearings fil and hs, which bearings are formed or rest upon an arm, H3. This arm H3 is secured to thecarrior H. The presser-rod h6 is provided with a roller, h". This roller hi rests against an abutment, Al. The abutment A7 is shown as being formed by a rod, along which the roller h can travel when the cutter moves-back and forth. i
The presser-rod h6 is provided with asleeve or abutment, hm, and between this sleeve 0r abutment and the bearing h8 is a spring, hm. A coiled spring surrounding the 'presser-rod h will answer, the spring h12 being so applied as to force the carrier H into such` a position that the cutter H2 will be in contact with the ledger-blade A4. In case the ledger-blade A4 should not have an even surface, the yielding worn away the screw 701.3 can be caused to press the shaft h and cutter H2 nearer to the ledgerblade Ai, thus compensating for wear.
The shaft h is provided with slots or grooves h1, into which slots or grooves h lientm screws hu. The portions of the screws h15 which enter the slots or grooves h are of such size as not to occupy the entire width of the slots h, thus allowing the shaft h, and with it the cutter H2, to rock within narrow limits. This rocking or tipping is caused bythe actuating lever H5, which imparts motion to the cuttercarrier H by means of -the connecting-rods H6 H7 H8. The'connecting-rodv 8 is connected with a stud or screw, h1, secured to the shaft h, said stud h5 passing through a slot or hole, hu, in the carrier H. The slot or hole h is of such a size as to allow the stud h1 some motion in said slot h, thus enabling the shaft h to 'be rocked. As the rod His caused to move the cutter H2 back and forth, the rod H8 at the same time slightly inclines or tilts the cutter H2 to one side or the other against the ledgerblade A4. This inclined position ofthe cutter IOO a perfect severing of any material that is inserted between the ledger-blade A4 and the cnt ter H2-'as, for example, paper, clot-h, and the like.
VA sponge, or its equivalent, 'can be secured to a small arm, h1, which arm h19 can be secured to the shaft 7L. The sponge h1B will serve to remove paste, moisture, or foreign matter adhering to the edge of the cutter H2,which is liable to be the case when the cutter H2 is caused to act on material having paste or moisture.
When the cutter H2 is caused to move rapidly, it may occur that paste, moisture, orfor eign matter-as, for example, particles of the material heilig severed--will lodge or be thrown against the guide-pulleys h. To prevent this I cover or partly cover the guidepulleys with shields or guards c a. These shields or guards a a may befornied of sheet metal or other suitable material, and screwed or otherwise secured to the carrier H in such a manner as to cover or partly cover the guidepulleys ht. (See Figs. 3 and 4.) In Fig. 3 one of said shields or guards a a is removed, so as to expose a guide-pulley, h, while another shield or guard, ct, is shown in position with a guide pulleyV underneath. dotted lines.)
To secure an easy movement of the carrier H along the guide H, the carrier H can be provided with rollers c c. These rollers c c can be made to support the carrier H', and said rollers c c will permit of an easy movement of the carrier H along the guide H. The rollers cc may have their shafts or bearings in arms or lugs secured to the carrier H', or the rollers may be mounted in any suitable way on the carrier H. When the carrier H travels rapidly baek and forth, the blow or jar produced by the carrier H coming into contact with the frame or arms A3 can produce injury. To avoid or deaden such blow or jar, a yielding surface or a buffer or spring, b b, can be placed between the carrier Hand the arms A3. This yielding surface may be formed, for example, by coiled springs Vplaced about the guide H', or by felt, rubber, or yielding material, which rubber, felt, or yielding material may be attached to the arms A3, or to the carrier H; or tubes of rubber,{felt, or other yielding material may be placed about the guide H, between the carrier H and the arms A2.
When the carrier H comes into sudden contactwith the yielding surface b Z, the yielding surface will gradually retard the movement of the carrier H and avoid a blow or jar,
which might be caused by abrupt stoppage of the carrier H.
The cutter is shown as being adapted to be moved by a treadle. The treadle shown in the drawings contains two pedals, D D, swinging about pivots E E; Ihe pedals are provided with arms F F, which connect with arms A2 A2. 'Ihe arms A2 A2 are firmly connected to or form part of the actuating lever or arm H5, swinging about a pivot or fulcrum, A5.
to a connecting-rod, H".
(Indicated in Y toswing or move in one direction, and by de pressing the other pedal the lever H5 is caused to swing in the opposite direction. The actuating lever or arm can thus be caused to move back and forth by depressing iirst one and then the other of the pedals D D of the treadle. As the arms F F swing with the arms A2 A2, the pedals D D will alternately rise and fall as the arms A2 A2 oscillate. The actuating lever or arm is pivoted or suitably connected The connectingrod H6 is pivoted or suitably connected to a lever or connecting arm, H7, swinging about apivot or fulcruin, G. rIhe lever or arm Hl is piv-, oted or suitably connected to the rod or arm HB, which, as already described, is connected with the cutter H2. The back-and-forth motions of the actuating-lever H5 cause back-andforth motions of the rods and levers H H-T H", and of the cutter H2. The cutting operation can thus be rapidly performed without it being necessary i'or the operator of the machine to use the hands in the cutting operation. The hands of the operator are thus left free to per form other work, as required.
The cutting device above described will be found very useful, for example, in machines or apparatus in which one or more strips of paper or suitable material, B, are led over pasting apparatus and to a box or cover, for the purpose of being applied to such box or cover. In such machine or apparatus such cutting device ean be used to cut or sever proper lengths from the strip or strips B, which strip or strips B can be fed between the ledger-blade A and the cutter H2, as seenin Fig. 5. FAs the cutting or severing operation can be attained by the action of the'feet upon the treadle D D, the hands of the operator are free to properly .adjust and apply the strip or strips B to a box or cover, or to do other work, as may be required. Of course I do not limit' myself to the application of the cutting 4or severing device to box-machines, as said cutting or severing device may be advantageously applied elsewhere than in boX-machines-as, for eX ample, in wrapping-machines, for cutting' proper lengths of wrappers, o r in various other machines or apparatus where cutting or severing is to be done.
It will be noticed that by depressing one of the pedals D D of the treadle the cutter H will travel along to one end of the ledger-blade IOC..
At, er to one side of the apparatus, and will remain there until the other of said pedals D D is depressed, when the cutter H2 will travel to the other end of the ledger-blade -A, or to the opposite side of the apparatus, and will then remain there until the first-named pedal is again depressed. The treadle thus positively moves the cutter H2 both back and forth, and the useof a spring or weight for moving the cutter is dispensed with. A disadvantage of having a cutter moved positively in one direction by a treadle and` returned to its original position by a spring or weight is, that when the cutter has been moved by the -treadle against the action of the spring or weight into a certain position the cutter will be returned at improper periods to its original position by the spring or weight, unless held by a suitable retaining device or by the pressure of the foot upon the treadle until such time as it is proper for the cutterto return to its original position.`
acted upon by the cutter, the progress and quality of the Work may be injuriously affected by the motion of the cutter at improper periods.
In my device springs or weights for moving the cutter are dispensed with. The treadle positively moves the cutter both back and forth, and the cutter remains at rest until the operator desires the cutter to move, when such operator presses upon the proper pedal of the treadle, and thus causes -'the cutter to move.
I am awarethat cutting or severing devices are set forth or described, for example, in United States Letters Patent No. 67,669, dated August 13,1867,and No. 294,486, dated March 4, 1884, and No. 299,225, dated May 27, 1884. I am also aware that it is not new t0 cause a cutting device to move in one direction by a pedal, a spring being employed to return the 'in opposite directions, substantially as set cutter to its original position, such arrangement being set forth in United States Letters Patent No. 278,442, dated May 29, 1883. Such prior known devices I do not claim.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. The combination, with a cutter or severing device, H2, a carrier, H', and a'guide, H, of an actuating lever or arm, H5, connecting mechanism, substantially as described, between the arm Hand the carrier H', and a treadle, D D, for positively moving said arm' 45 forth.
2. The combination, with a cutter or severing device, H', a carrier, H', and a guide, H, of'the swinging lever or arm H5, pivoted at its lower portion and having oppositely-projecting rigid arms, A2 A2, the pivoted pedals D D, connected, respectively, with the rigid arms,Y the swinging vertical rod H', connected with the carrier, and the rod H", connecting the swinging vertical rod with the upper end 0F55 the lever or arm, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set'l my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
