Description

(No Model.) v
O. E. BLAKE, Sr. ARTIFICIAL TOOTH.
No. 355,126. Patented Dec. 28, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLEs BLAKE, sR, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
ARTIFICIAL TooTl-I.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,126, dated December 28, 1886 Application filed November 18, 1884. Serial No. 148,260. (No molel.) I
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEs E. BLAKE, SE, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of Oalifornimhave invented an Improvement in Artificial Teeth; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to metal crowns (including the masticating-surfaces) with porcelain faces; and it consists in having the thin metal crown perforated upon its labial surface.
and a thin enamel baked thereon.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is aview showing the artificial crown attached to the root and having an enamel front. Fig. 2 shows the crown detached and the small holes or means of securing the'enamel to it.
A is a crown, which ispreferably formed of platinum, and is made to fit the root or any remaining portion of the tooth, being built up therefrom, so as to have a proper shape and height, being in all respects when finished a complete tooth ready for service.
Inorder to produce a natural shade or color for the front of this tooth, so that it may match the adjoining tooth, I apply a thin coating of enamel to the labial face. In order to do this the frontof this crown is perforated with numerous holes, into which the enamel paste may be pressed when it is applied to the front of the tooth in a plastic condition, or the face may be roughened, corrugated, or otherwise fitted to retain the enamel in place. This en- 31116191328136 is made of the proper material and shaped to the front of the crown, so that it forms a thin coating therefor and conceals the metallic portion when observed from the front. After the paste has been applied the crown is placed in a furnace and subjected to a heat sufficiently high to fuse the enamel and fix it to the crown, after which the tooth is finished up to attach to the root or remaining portion of the tooth for which it has been made.
The crown may be attached by bone filling or other suitable means, and when in place serves to perform all the duties of the tooth which it replaces.
I am aware that artificial teeth have been attached to plates or caps which are afterward secured to the root or remaining portion of a tooth by the use of amalgam filling and a screw or pin which is secured in the root of a thin glaze or coating of enamel, which is not intended to do any work, but simply conceals the bright color of the metal and gives the tooth an appearance similar to that of a solid or natural tooth, the metallic or platinum crown having all the firmness and durability of any artificial crown. V
I do not broadly claim a metal crown with porcelain front baked thereon.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A platinum tooth-crown upon which is the masticating-surface, having its front or labial face covered with enamel, which is united to it by perforations in the process of baking, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
