UNITED STATES PATENT OFF ion.
WVILLIAM A. HINKLE AND FRANKLIN O..JEFFERY, OF GALVESTON, TEXAS.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,080, dated December 28, "1886.
-Se1lalN0. 215,363. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM A. HINKLE and FRANKLIN O. JEFFERY, both of Galveston, in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, haveinvented a new and Improved Door-Check, of which the following is a'specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure l is a perspective view showing the application of our improved door-check. Fig.
. 2 is a longitudinal section showing the door partly open, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section showing the door fully opened and held in position by the door-check.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of our invention is to provide a simple and efficient device forarresting the motion of a door while being opened and for fastening it in an open position.-
Our invention consists in a slotted plate provided at one end with a buifer for arresting the door, and having in the walls of the longitudinal slot series of diagonal slots, in combinat-ion with a counterweighted latch provided with trunnions received in the diagonal slots, all as hereinafter more fully described.
The base-plate A is provided with a longitudinal slot, B, extending throughout the greater portion of its length, and has,at one end an arm, 0, projecting at right angles with the plate, with a chamber, a, in its vertical face for receiving the hemispherical elastic buffer D. In oppositewalls of the slot B of 'the frame A are formed series of diagonal slots 12, inclined away from the buffer D, and to the slot B is fitted a latch, E, having on opposite edges thereof, near its mid-length, trunnions c, which may be placed in different pairs of diagonal slots 12, according to the thickness of the door in connection with which the check is to be used. The end of the latch E nearest the buffer D is apertured to reduce its weight,
while the opposite end ,is made solid and of sufficient weight to overbalance the apertured end, so that normally the apertured end of the latch projects above the upper surface of the plate A and into the path of the door F, in connection with which the stop is used.,
The door-stop is secured to the floor with the buffer D at the pointwhere itis desired to arrest the door when opened, and the trunnions of. the latch E are placed in a pair of the slots 1), so as to leave a space between the end of the latch and the buffer B about equal to the thickness of the'door. When the door is opened, it glides over the latch E, depressing its lighter end and raising its weighted end,
1 .and when the door has passed the latch the lighter end of the latch rises in front of the edge of the door, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and holds the door in its open position. When it is desiredv to close the door, the latch E is depressed by the foot.
The latch is operated by gravity and re-' quires no springs. It is therefore inexpensive in its manufacture, and not liable to derangement. As the check is secured to the floor instead of the baseboard, as is usual, it may be employed for holding the door open at any de: sired point.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent- The combination, with the plate A, provided with the longitudinal slot B, the oblique slots 6, and the arm 0, of the counterweighted latch E, provided with trunnions 0, adapted to be.
received in the diagonal slots b, substantiall y as described.
