CIRCULAR SAWING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.355,011, dated December 28, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. GRAY, of Green Point, Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Self-Feeding Sawing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
' My invention relates to sawingmachines which are provided with feed-rolls, whereby the lumber is fed automatically to the saw, and in the machine which I have chosen to illustrate my invention the lower feed roll or rolls is or are movable Vertically with the sawtable, and the upper feed-roll is also movable 1 or adjustable vertically in order to suit the different thicknesses of lumber which may be sawed by the machine.
My invention consists in a novel combination of mechanism for raising and lowering the saw-table relatively to the saw-arbor, as
particularly hereinafter described.
The invention also consists in a novel combination of mechanism, hereinafter described, whereby a single feed-pinion on a shaft which 2 5 is supported in fixed bearings hasimpart-ed to it a variable motion from the saw-arbor, and
-' transmits such variable motion to a lower feed roll or rolls which are movablevertically 'with the saw-table.
0 The invention also consists in a novel combination of mechanism, hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims, whereby the upper feed-roll is supported so that it is vertically adjustable, and also capable of being 5 swung horizontally to one side of the table when it is not desired to be used.
The invention also consists in a novel combination of mechanism, particularly hereinafter described, whereby motion is transmitted 0 to the upper feed-roll in its differentpositions above the table.
The invention also consists in a novel com: bination, with asaw arbor and table, of an upper feed-roll shaft and two feed-rolls which 5 are interchangeably fitted thereto, one roll having a smooth surface for finished lumber and the other having a spurred or toothed surface for rough lumber.
The several combinations of mechanism which are above briefly referred to are hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation .of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan thereof. Fig. 3 is an end view of the machine, looking from the left hand of Fig. 1; and Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively a side view and face view of an upper feed-roll having a spurred or toothed surface, which may be employed in feeding rough unfinished lumber.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates the frame of the machine, which is preferably of metal, and may be of any suitable form to properly sustain the operating mechanism.
B designates the saw-arbor, upon which is fixed the saw B, and B designates the pulley on the saw-arbor, around which passes a driving-belt. (Not here shown.)
' C designates-the table through which the saw B works, and which may be raised and lowered relatively to the saw by mechanism which I shall presently describe. Upon this table 0 a gage of any suitable construction may be employed.
I D D designate two counter-shafts,which are mounted in suitable bearings on the lower part of the frame A, and through which the feed mechanism, hereinafter described, is operated. The shaft D receives motion by a belt, (2, driving from a pulley, b, on the sawarbor B, onto a pulley, d, on the countershaft D, and these two counter-shafts are connected by a belt, d and reversely-arrauged cone-pulleys (l (1", whereby provision is afforded for varying the speed of the countershaft D, from which the feed mechanism is operated.
The table 0 is provided with downwardlyextending guiding-rods O, which are fitted to suitable guides or slideways in the frame 'A, and said table is supported by camsc, which are arranged at opposite ends of two parallel side shafts, O".
O designates a cross-shaft journaled in the frame A, and connected at its ends by bevelgears c with the two side shafts, C Consequently it will be seen that any turning move- :00.
ment of the cross-shaft 0 would be transmitted to the side shafts and to the cams 0, thereby raising or lowering the table. Upon the crossshaft G is an arm, G, provided at the end with a nut, c, and C designates a screw engaging this nut and supported ina swiveled bearing, 0 attached to the frame A. The screw 0 has a handle, 0, whereby it may be turned, and
when the screw is turned in one or other di'-" rection it will swing the arm 0* and the shaft 0 to which it is connected. By this arrangement of parts the table may be conveniently raised or lowered to any minute degree desired without any cramping or binding, as it is supported at four points upon the four cams c, and the screw and nut also serving to hold the table in position after adjustment.
In order to properly feed thelumbcr forward to the saw B, I employ upper and lower feedrolls. As here represented, a single upper roll, E, and two lower rolls, E E", are employed. The roll E is opposite and vertically below the'upper feed-roll, E, while the roll E is arranged forward of the roll E. The two lower rolls, E E", are upon shafts e, which are jonrnaled in bearings attached to the table 0, and the rolls operate in openings formed in the table and rise and fall with the table. Upon a fixed shaft or stud, e, secured at the side of the table in a bracket or plate, A, which is fast to the frame A, are a pinion, c and pulf ley e which rotate together as one piece, and which are driven by a belt, 6*, from a pulley, e on the counter-shaftD. This pulley 0 may be operated through a clutch, 6, controlled by a lever, 6, so that the pulley may, when desired, be freed from the shaft and the feeding mechanism stopped. The pinion e and the pulley e I term the feed pinion and the feed-pulley, as it is through them that the upper and lower feedrolls receive motion. Upon the ends of the lower feed roll shafts, c, are gear-wheels e", which engage with the pinion' c, and by the'pinion are driven in the direction indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1, thereby transmitting to both the lower feedrolls, E E", a positive rotary motion. The shaft or stud e on which the feed pinion 0 turns is so arranged that when the table 0 is in or near its lowest position, as shown in the drawings, the center of the pinion will be somewhat above the center of the roll shafts e, and when the table is raised to highest position the shafts e will be somewhat above the center of the pinion e. To provide for this movement of the wheels 6 relatively to the pinion e, the teeth of the wheels and pinion do not intermesh to the full depth.

A designates a non rotary post, which springs upward from the plate A, and is thereby rigidly supported at the side of the sawtable 0.
F designates a horizontal arm,which has at the end an eye or socket fitting on the exterior of the post A and which may be adjustable vertically on the post in order to raise or lower I i quired to be used. As here represented, the horizontal arm F supports or carries the feedroll E and its shaft f, through a swinging frame, F,which is best shown in Fig. 2. This frame has forwardlyprojecting arms f,which are pivoted at f to arms 7, projecting forward from the horizontal arm F. The horizontal arm or bar F has connected with it, and; as here shown, extending at right angles to it, a guidingarm, F which, as the arm F is adjusted upward and downward, rises and falls in a vertical slideway or guide, F This guiding-arm F and the slideway or guide F serve to hold the horizontal arm F and the shaft f of the upper feed-roll, E, in parallelism with the saw-arbor B, and when the arm Fis raised so that the guidingarm F passes above the slideway or guide Fthe arm F,with its swinging frame F, may be swung horizontally forward and outward to the side of the machine, if it is not desired to use the upper feed=roll, E.
The arm F may be raised and lowered on the post A by any suitable means. I have here represented for this purpose a vertical screw, f ,which may be operated by a handle, This screw has a bearing in a segmental slotted plate, f", at thetop of the post A, and
engages a nut, f, in or on the horizontal arm.
'F. The segmental slot in the plate f, in which the screw has a bearing, permits the arm F to be swung horizontally, and may also limit such horizontal swinging movement.
In order to adjust the swinging frame F upward and downward relatively to the arm F, I have represented in the swinging frame a distance-screw, f which bears upon the arm F, and which may beadj usted as required.
It is advantageous to have the arm I supported by a non-rotary post, as distinguished from an arm supported by a vertical shaft through which motion is transmitted to the feed-roller carried by the arm, because the arm has a more stable support and the feedroll and arm are prevented from springing upward, as they would be liable to do if the arm were ona vertical shaft having rotary motion,which would soon produce wear and shake in the bearings of the arm which fit the shaft.
Supported upon the table 0 is a stationary bearing, h, in which is jonrnaled ashortshaft, h, having upon it a pinion, h and a larger wheel, h said wheel engaging a pinion, h, on the adjacent lower roll-shaft, e, and receiving motion from said pinion h". Upon the end of the shaftf of the upper feed-roll, E, is a pinion, 7?, and by means of pinions h h motion is transmitted from the pinion h to the pinion h? and the upper roll-shaft, f. In order to provide for this transmission of power from the pinion h whatever be the vertical position of the upper roll-shaft, f, I have represented the IIC Its
pinions h 717 as having their journals supported in swinging expansion-links h h", which hold the pinions in proper driving engagement, and at the same time provide for their circular adjustment about the shaft h. When the arm F with the swinging frame F is swung horizontally to the side of the machine, the pinion h of course swings out of gear with the pinion h, and in order to hold them in proper driving engagement when the said arm and swinging frame are adjusted to working position, as shown in the drawings, I have represented a hooked lever or latch, h, which is pivoted or fulcrumed concentric with the pinion h, and is notched or hooked at h to fit over the upper roll-shaft, f.
In sawing smooth or finished lumber it is desirable to employ a smoothsurfaced upper feed-roll, E, so as not to impair the surface of the lumber; but in working rough lumber the upper feedroll may have a spurred or toothed surface. I have shown in Figs. at and 5 an upper feed-roll, E, which consistsof a toothed disk, 1', secured between plates or flanges i, the whole forming an upper feed-roll'having a spurred or toothed surface. The smoothsurfaced roll E and the spurred or toothedroll should be interchangeably fitted on the shaft f, and for this purpose they may be fitted to said shaft with a spline or key and a groove, and be secured, one. or other of them, on the shaft by means of a key or pin inserted through the end of the shaft, or in any other suitable manner. A
"What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i.S-
1. The combination, with a sawarbor and a table vertically movable relatively thereto, of parallel side shafts, each provided at opposite ends with cams for lifting the table, a
cross-shaft geared to the side shafts, an arm upon the cross-shaft, and a screw whereby the arm may be operated and the shafts and cams turned to raise orlower the table, and whereby the shafts and cams are held in place after adjustment, substantially as herein described. 2. The combination, with the saw-arbor B and movable table 0, of the side shafts, 0', provided with cams c, the cross-shaft Gigeared with the side shafts, the arm 0 on the crossshaft provided with a nut, c", the screw Ciand the swiveled bearing 0 supporting the screw, substantially as herein described.
3. The combination, with a saw-arbor and a table movable vertically relatively thereto,
of a lower feed roll'or rolls movable with the I table, a feed-pinion gearing with a wheel or wheels on the lower roll or rolls, and apinionshaft having a fixed bearing and provided with a feed-pulley, a pair of counter-shafts connected by a belt and cone'pulleys, a belt and pulleys whereby one counter-shaft is driven from the sawarbor, and a belt and pulley whereby the feed-pulley is driven from the other counter-shaft, substantially as herein described.
4c. The combination, with a saw-arb0r and a table movable vertically relatively thereto, oftwo lower feed-rolls movable with the table and provided with gear-wheels, and a-single feed-pinion and pinion-shaft journaled in a fixed bearing between the said feed-rolls and from which they are both driven, substantially as herein described.
5. The combination, with a saw arbor and table, of a non-rotary post supported rigidly at the side of the table, a horizontal arm vertically adjustable on the non-rotary post and carrying an upper feedroll, and gearing independent of the post for driving said feedroll, substantially as herein-described.
' 6. The combination, with a saw arbor and table, of a non-rotary post supported rigidly at the side of the table, a horizontal arm carrying an upper feed-roll, and which is vertically adjustableon the post and turnable thereon to move the upper feed-roll out of position when not required for use, and gearing independent of the post for driving said roll, substantially as herein described.
7. The combination, with a saw arbor and table, of a non-rotary post, A, rigidly supported at the side of the table, a horizontal arm, F, carrying anupper feed-roll and vertically adj ustable'and turn'able on the post, the screw j, for adjusting said arm vertically, the segmental guide and bearing f for the screw, whereby the turning movement of the arm on the post is permitted and limited, and gearing independent of the post for driving the feed-roll, substantially as herein described.v
' 8. The combination, with a saw arbor and table, of a post, A supported rigidly at the side of thetable, an arm, F, carrying an upper feed-roll and which is vertically adj ustable and turnable on the post, and provided with a guiding-arm, F, and a slideway or guide, F for the guiding-arm F and which permits the arm F to be turned on the post when raised sufficiently to free the guiding-arm from the slideway or guide, substantially as herein described.
9. The combination, with a saw arbor and table, of a post rigidly supported at the side of the table, a horizontal arm vertically adjustalole on the rigid post, and aframe having an upper feed-roll and shaft journaled in it and pivoted to said arm so as to swing in a vertical plane transverse to the length of the arm and feed-roll shaft, substantially as herein described.
10. The con1bination,'wit.h a saw arbor and table, of the rigid post A, the arm F, verti cally adjustable on the post, the frame F, pivoted to said arm to swing in a vertical plane transverse to the length thereof, the upper feed-roll and its shaft f, journaled in said frame, and the distance-screw f, for adjustingjustable on the post, an upper feed-roll shaft carried by said arm and provided with an upper feed-roll and a pinion, a shaft journaled in stationary hearings on the bed and provided with a pinion through which motion is to be transmitted to the upper feed-roll shaft, and a pinion or pinions supported by expansion or swinging links to provide for the vertical adjustment of the upper feed'roll shaft, and serving to transmit motion to said feedroll shaft from the shaft in stationary bearings, substantially as herein described.
