This arrangement obviates the unseemly fixings of the pawls externally around the hub, looks ncater, is more compact, andl in every respect superior. Thus by drawing it back or forth from-one catch into the other the box s is moved, carrying the shaft and pinion with it out or into gear with the wheel q, acting or arresting the motion of the crank-pulley at lever, rope, or chain being detached from the pleasure, which latter operates the sickles in thel ordinary Way by a pitman or connecting ro My improvement further consists in theY specific construction and arrangement of the sliding boxes H- H2, (shown on the reverse sides,) in the manner they set against therecess cut out of the inner sides of the uprights E, Fig. 1. By means of these screws F acting upon the boxes IIH2 through the thread cut into the flange upon Which they also slide, the reel-shaft can be adjusted to any desired height demanded by the size of the grain to be cut, also affording great facilities in tightening the operating-cord over the pulleys. I have also modified the position of my gum-elastic stuffing-box P and its connection,
for which I obtained Letters Patent bearing date October 4, 1859, being, however, deemed substantially the same. I now place the gumclastic stuffing-box under the front cross-piece of `the truck, and provide the spring-bar lv (connected therewith by a bolt to which itis hinged at one end, the other being furnished with a hook, 1', to embrace the inner shoe, z, of the main bar K) with a perforated lug, t, over which the open slotted end of the shoe locks, so that instead of turning it over on its hinged connection, the main bar K, with its appendages, is simply unhooked by hand and laid (being detached) across the rear of the truck tted for its reception, the ratchetring Z on x to the ring r on the hook, Fig. 8, in order to prevent the spring-bar n and pitman from dragging. The platform, when used, is
readily removed, and so formed as to lodge on the side of the truck under the uprights F of the reel, the reel being first also placed into its appropriate place on the truck when going kto or from the field, being all compactlysecured and readily-put 011 and taken off.
I do not claim the stuffing-box I; no'r do I claim the general construction of the truck and traction Wheels and sickle-bars or gearing, these being common.
W'hat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as an improvement in harvestcrs,
l. The tubulated and iianged pawl-heads (il, connected with the Vmain shaft or axle V of the machine, in combination with the ratchetboX b, Which forms the hub of the tractionwhecls B, and is-supported on the tubes cof the pawl-heads, for the purpose and in the manner specified.
2. The double flanged and slotted hanger, (5,) constructed and applied in the manner and for the purpose specified.
3. rIhe specific construction aud arrangement of the hinge-plate Q, for adjusting the pulley N on the dividing-shoe L, in combination With the loose and changeable perforated lug O, for the purpose set forth.
4. The arrangement and construction of the T-flanged sliding screw-boxes H H2, in combination with the screws F, for regulating the reelshaft in the manner specified.
