Description

1 To" all whom t V777,02/ concern/f ferstown, in the county of `Lebanon and State of `Pennsylr*ania,-haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements on *Harvesters or f Mowing and Reaping Machines; and I do herebydeelare {that the following is a full, clear,
. and exact description ofthe construction and operation ofthe saine, reference being had to,l the accompanying drawings, making a part of p "this specification, inwhichl Figure 1 is a perspective view of the main 1 z parts 0f the m achine withtheseveral improveinentsin place. Fig. 2 shows the connection Hof. the gearing `andshifting lever; Fig. 3, a detached view of the `gearingf and ungearing lever; Fig.` 4L illustrates the sliding` screw-boxes p for the reel-shaft" disconnected. fFigQ is an "enlarged i View of the double flanged and sl ot-l ted/ hangen` "FigllGfillustrates the driving- "wheelwithits ratchet-boxhavingthe pawl- A head 6', removed. (62 shows the inside ofthe `pawl-head.) "Fig, `7 illustrates the outer regudating-plate, Q, `for the pulley Naud its loose "perforated lug O. Fig. 8" showsv the hooked "arrangement forf connecting the spring-bar V V with them ain bar K, removed from each other.
Their connection `is shown in Fig. l. y I deemitsimplynecessary to confine myself l `to those parts consideredasimprovements. In Vthe first place, the construction of the slotted two-flanged hanger attached below the rear J cross-piece ofthe truck, Fig. 5. The vibrating bar "Y is affixed by a pinin the bracket at one end, enters the slot between the flanges 8 8 of the hanger. a'llhesefrflanges and the slot are slightly curved to accommodate Vthe. same to the up-jand-dowii motion ofthespring-arm `V.
p The iianges alsohaveaseries of holes opposite each other fora pin, which confines the p bar. at any. desired pointy and affordsa wide scope.. for adjustment, besides enabling the driver at short notice to raise theentire sicklebar from the ground sufficiently high to carry itover stumps and large stones (especially when cnttingvgrass) by means' of the l ratchetlever T, with its cord orfchain passinglover the pulley G and its connection to the arm X" K at Z.` The bar-Y, being connected to the main or finger .bar K, `supports it, `together with the inner shoe,.Z, sickle-barl, by means y ofthehanger,l Fig.`5,-and` obviates the neces- "sity of a supporting-pulley under the shoe.
.rim-ED' STA*f1-ts. PATENT;- metg f DWD GZG., oF,` YSHEFriar!-SToW-N, PENNSYLVANIA' l 11M PROVEMENT N j H ARVESJ' RS- u Specilieatiii forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,118.5, dated Junel, 1862.
Q, Fig. 7, having projecting knuckles or ears l, 2,-and 3. For the adjustment of the arm` n n of the pulley-wheel N,Fig. l, a pintle of sufiicient length enters these ears and pulleyarm. I also employ a looseperforated lug,
O, which may be set under or overa pulleyarm on either side of the ears, and thus Vform `an intermediate support, also steadying the connection ofthe arm n n on the hinge-plate Q, with its flanges 4t 4- 5,k constituting the second' improvement.
My improvement further consists in the peculiarf-arrangement of the 'click orlpawl-head operating within the ratchet-box b, Fig-6.
tube slipping over the axle fw of the machine andentering the bore of the traction-wheels u arrest the forward motion of the traction' wheels B, thereby operating the connected` i gearing c 11, q, tc.
however, the traction-wheels arenot arrested yby the pawls, but revolve on the tubes cwith- In backing the machine,
out giving any or a'reverse motion to the gearing,y 6 is the external and 62 the internal face of the pawl-head; f, the `covering-iiange;
d, theclicks or pawls; g, the springs; c, the tube. This arrangement obviates the unseemly fixings of the pawls externally around the hub, looks ncater, is more compact, andl in every respect superior. The box s, which supports the end ofthe shaft I I and the beveledpinion l operating the crank-pulleyal gr, is supported by and slides upon the `boxes y y, (which latter support the axle w of the machine.) The external portion of box s has araised iiange over,
which the forked end of the shifting-lever u y ts, which `lever has its fulcrum in the curved bered plate. Thus by drawing it back or forth from-one catch into the other the box s is moved, carrying the shaft and pinion with it out or into gear with the wheel q, acting or arresting the motion of the crank-pulley at lever, rope, or chain being detached from the pleasure, which latter operates the sickles in thel ordinary Way by a pitman or connecting ro My improvement further consists in theY specific construction and arrangement of the sliding boxes H- H2, (shown on the reverse sides,) in the manner they set against therecess cut out of the inner sides of the uprights E, Fig. 1. H2 shows the inner raised T-flange into which the screw-threadis cut, and the f supporting-groove for the reel-shaft I I I, with its pulley I. H shows the hole for the reception of the inner end of the shaft. The reel attached to the outer end is not shown. F are long screws resting Within the Wood-work of the uprights, and the broad heads on the top of the cross-piece, Fig. I. By means of these screws F acting upon the boxes IIH2 through the thread cut into the flange upon Which they also slide, the reel-shaft can be adjusted to any desired height demanded by the size of the grain to be cut, also affording great facilities in tightening the operating-cord over the pulleys. I have also modified the position of my gum-elastic stuffing-box P and its connection,
for which I obtained Letters Patent bearing date October 4, 1859, being, however, deemed substantially the same. I now place the gumclastic stuffing-box under the front cross-piece of `the truck, and provide the spring-bar lv (connected therewith by a bolt to which itis hinged at one end, the other being furnished with a hook, 1', to embrace the inner shoe, z, of the main bar K) with a perforated lug, t, over which the open slotted end of the shoe locks, so that instead of turning it over on its hinged connection, the main bar K, with its appendages, is simply unhooked by hand and laid (being detached) across the rear of the truck tted for its reception, the ratchetring Z on x to the ring r on the hook, Fig. 8, in order to prevent the spring-bar n and pitman from dragging. The platform, when used, is
readily removed, and so formed as to lodge on the side of the truck under the uprights F of the reel, the reel being first also placed into its appropriate place on the truck when going kto or from the field, being all compactlysecured and readily-put 011 and taken off.
I do not claim the stuffing-box I; no'r do I claim the general construction of the truck and traction Wheels and sickle-bars or gearing, these being common.
W'hat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as an improvement in harvestcrs,
l. The tubulated and iianged pawl-heads (il, connected with the Vmain shaft or axle V of the machine, in combination with the ratchetboX b, Which forms the hub of the tractionwhecls B, and is-supported on the tubes cof the pawl-heads, for the purpose and in the manner specified.
2. The double flanged and slotted hanger, (5,) constructed and applied in the manner and for the purpose specified.
3. rIhe specific construction aud arrangement of the hinge-plate Q, for adjusting the pulley N on the dividing-shoe L, in combination With the loose and changeable perforated lug O, for the purpose set forth.
4. The arrangement and construction of the T-flanged sliding screw-boxes H H2, in combination with the screws F, for regulating the reelshaft in the manner specified.
