BUTTER STORING AND SPREADING PACKAGE Filed Oct. 25, 1968 I /0 I :1 i H "I 4 II J I I/6 v I r- {1 I I II I INVEN TOR. ASAD F. ISAF United States Patent 3,545,873 BUTTER STORING AND SPREADING PACKAGE Asad F. Isaf, 3 Hamlin St., Cortland, N.Y. 13045 Filed Oct. 25, 1968, Ser. No. 770,602
Int. Cl. 865d 15/22 U.S. Cl. 401-98 3 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A package for storing and spreading a spreadable material such as butter or the like including a base receiving a quantity of spreadable material, a transparent cover secured to the base by a tear cord and a pair of tab handles on the base that may be positioned in a stored position against the base, a handle forming position depending perpendicularly from the base, and a display stand position with the tab handles depending in diverging relation to form supporting legs.
The present invention generally relates to the packaging and spreading of spreadable material such as butter, jellies, relishes, mayonnaise or equivalent materials onto a surface such as a slice of bread.
The packaging and spreading of materials such as butter or the like has presented problems in homes, restaurants and wherever people consume food. One solution to the problem has been the provision of individual patties or portions. However, the problem of effectively spreading the material on a slice of bread still exists. Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a package for a patty that effectively stores the patty in a sanitary manner and also enables attractive display thereof and efficient spreading onto a surface.
Another object of this invention is to provide a packaging and spreading device for a patty of spreadable material which is simple in construction, easy to use, and inexpensive to manufacture.
These together with other objects and advantages which Will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIG. 1 is a top plan view of the patty package and spreader;
FIG. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof;
FIG. 3 is a side elevational view thereof;
FIG. 4 is a sectional view taken along section line 4-4 on FIG. 2; and
FIG. 5 is an enlarged fragmental sectional view taken along section line 5-5 of FIG. 1 showing the tear string assembly.
Referring now specifically to the drawings, numeral generally designates the packaging and spreading device for a patty of butter or other spreadable material 12. The device includes a base 14 of heavy paper or cardboard treated to be impervious to the patty of spreadable material. The opposite edges of the base 14 have reverse bends 16 defining underlying flanges 18 attached to the underside of the base 14. Each flange 18 terminates in a fold line 20 and a folding tab handle 22 which may be folded to a position stored against the flanges 18, oriented in depending diverging relation or in perpendicular relation to the base 14 for use as a gripping handle as illustrated in 'FIG. 4.
Mounted on base 14 is a shallow cup-shaped transparent cover 24 constructed of shape sustaining plastic ice material and which includes a flat panel 26 having a depending peripheral flange 28 terminating in an outturned edge flange 30 integrally secured to the base 14 in any suitable manner such as heat sealing, bonding with an adhesive or the like. A flexible tear strip or string 32 is disposed at the juncture between the cover 24 and base 14 to separate the cover and base when it is pulled outwardly radially from the periphery of the base. One end 34 of the string is left loose outside of the package for easy gripping thereof.
When stored, the handles 22 are in a compact condition so that the package occupies a small space. When displayed, the handles 22 act as supporting legs so that the patty may be attractively displayed and observed. When spreading material onto a slice of bread, the handles 22 are oriented in perpendicular relation to the base 14 to enable easy manipulation thereof.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A package for storing and spreading a patty of spreadable material such as butter or the like comprising a base for supporting a patty, a cover attached to the base for enclosing the patty, means detachably connecting the cover to the base, and manually grasped handle means on said base to enable manipulation of the package when removing the cover and applying the spreadable material onto a surface such as a slice of bread, said handle means includes a pair of gripping panels hingedly attached to the central portion of the base for positioning in depending relation thereto to form a handle and disposed against and coextensive with the undersurface of the base when in stored position thereby enabling the package to be effectively stored in a compact space.
2. The structure as defined in claim 1 wherein said cover is constructed of shape-sustaining transparent material including a depending peripheral flange integrally connected with said base, said means providing release of the cover including a tear strip disposed peripherally of the flange to separate the cover from the base.
3. The structure as defined in claim 2 wherein said base is constructed of thin material having a planar upper surface to enable the spreadable material to be moved off the periphery thereof.
