m'ssflQFJE! 2 L KINVENTOR HERBERT EPRIEWF BY F163 M ATTORNEYS PICNIC TABLES My invention relates to picnic tables, and more particularly to a table for use on patios, or the like.
It is a known fact to anyone familiar with the art that picnic tables, or the like, usually are kept in any desirable out of doors location. Chairs for use with the table many times are removed therefrom and are not readily available when needed. Therefore, an integrally constructed and assembled unit is more convenient than a separate table and a plurality of seats. The integrally constructed picnic tables that are in use comprise a rectangular table with long benches on both long sides of the rectangle. A person who wishes to sit at the table must climb over the bench to do so unless he sits at the ends of the benches.
The prime object of my invention is to provide a unique picnic table with benches, that is, a self-contained unit that may be placed into any predetermined location.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device ofthe character described, that has the table and seat units integrally constructed, so it may be tipped into a vertical position for storage, or to protect the table top and seat surfaces from the elements when the unit is disposed in an outdoor location.
Thedevice illustrated and described herein, provides a unit in which all occupants of the seats are all in a position where they face one another. It is also possible for the individuals to occupy an individual seat, without the necessity of stepping over the seat when assuming the desired position.
The device is simple in construction, and highly efficient for the purpose for which it is intended. 7
Other and further objects of my invention will become more apparent as the description proceeds, when taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
FIG. I is a top view of the entire assembled device constructed in a hexagondesign.
FIG. 2 is a view of the device as shown in FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a side view ofthe assembly as shown in FIGS. land 2.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts and features throughout the several views, and referring now to the same, the character shows a table top which is of hexagon shape, but obviously may be round, square or of octagon design. It maybe constructed of wood, metal or the like.
The table top It) is supported by vertical standards shows shown as 11 attached at their upper ends to the table by means of flanges 12 or in any convenient manner. The lower ends of the standards 11 are attached at 13 to horizontal members 14 extending from a centrally disposed member 15 to the support member l6 which is of the same shape as the table top 10 and comprises sections shown as 17 to support a plurality of seats 18, bymeans of the vertical members 19 attached at 20 to the sections 17 and their upper ends at 21 to the seats 18.
Obviously, the parts I1, l4, l6 and 19, may be tubular or solid, and their method of attaching to one another may be by means of welding, or any other practical and efficient manner.
By referring to FIGS. I and 2, it will be noted that the seats 18 are disposed in alinement with the edges 22 of the table 10 theitable 10 is of hexagon design. the member 16 would have a hexagon shape; and support six seats 18.
It will also be noted that the seats I8 are spaced apart from one another, providing spaces generally shown as 23 (see FIG. 1'), between them, to permit the person to have easy access to the seat when he wishes to occupy it.
Inasmuch, as all the parts, constituting the assembled device are rigidly attached to their supports. it will produce an integral unit that may be tipped" and be supported in a vertical manner, which is an advantage when storing the device or placing it in a position to prevent. the elements from effecting the surfaces of the table and seats. In addition, the support member 20 provides a frame for slidably or rotatably moving the inventive picnic table. This is especially apparent when a round table is provided.
In the chosen embodiments of my invention, there are many features and parts that may be varied in form, shape, or contour, and I reserve the rig ts to make such changes as I may deem convenient, or necessary, without effecting the function of the device, and without departing from the spirit of m invention.
Having thus described my invention, which I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States is:
lclaim:
I. a picnic table comprising:
a table section;
said table section mounted on a base section;
bench means supported by said base section to serve as seats for said table section and forming an integral unit with said table section;
said bench means comprising a plurality of spaced apart sections whereby users can sit at said table without having to climb over said bench means; said base section comprising a unitary outer support member frame; 7
said outer support member frame having the same shape as said table section but extending beyond the outer periphery of said table section at all sides of said table section;
horizontal members extending inwardly from said outer support member frame; and
a centrally disposed member for coupling said horizontal members together to form said base section as a stable unit.
2. The picnic table ofclaim 1 wherein:
said outer support member frame comprises frame sections;
and wherein one of said bench sections is attached to each of said frame sections by vertical bench standards.
3. The picnic table of claim 2 wherein vertical table standards are rigidly attached to each ofsaid horizontal members for supporting said table section.
4. The picnic table of claim 3 wherein said frame sections, horizontal members and standards are oftubular construction.
5. The picnic table of claim 4 wherein said table section is polygonally shaped with as many of said bench sections as there are sides to said table.
