ELIJ AH L. WINEY, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,905, dated December 7, 1886.
Application filed April 13,1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELIJAH L. \VINEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of. reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of burners for lamps constructed to allow the insertion of a match to the'wick without removing the chimney, the object of the invention being to increase the convenience of the burner by securing a larger opening at a point in full view of the person lighting the lamp, through which he may insert the lighted match more quickly and'with greater certainty that it will ignite the wick.
The invention consists in the arrangements and combinations of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a lamp burner and chimney; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same, taken through line to, the cap of the burner being broken away to show more clearly the arrangements and construction of certai 11 parts.
In said drawings, a is a perforated plate providing a seat or bearing for the chimney and support for the wick-tube b and slotted cap 0. The said plate a has therein an opening, (1, of sufficient size to allow the insertion of a lighted match to the chamber beneath the said cap, said opening extending out to the peripheral edge of the plate a and through the said seat for the chimney, so that when opened it will be in clear View of the person igniting the wick. The fingerpiece e of the shutter projects beyond the periphery of the Serial No. 198,670. (No model.)
vides a finger-piece, e, by means of which the shutter may be depressed by the hand to allow the match to be thrust through the opening over said shutter, so that the ascending flame will not be extinguished by the broad surface that would be presented thereto, or said surfaceblackened, orthe depressingfingerburned, and into close contiguity to the wick. The shutter is closed automatically by means of a suitable spring, f, fastened beneath the perforated plate and bearing upward against the shutter. Said spring is preferably of wire; but it may be of flat metal formed in any manner.
Having thus described claim as new is- The improved burner herein described, consisting, essentially, of a slotted cap, a wicktube, a perforated plate having a seat for the chimney, and an opening extending outward through and beyond said seat and the periph ELIJAH L. YVINEY.
