UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN KOERNER, OF ROCHESTER, YORK.
COMBINATION-LADDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,868, dated December 7, 1886.
Application filed February 13, 1886. Serial No. 191,868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN KOERNER,
of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination-Ladders, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved ladder, with one of the sections omitted, showing it extended in position for climbing a steep roof. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the ladder arranged for supporting a low staging. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modification, showing the ladder extended. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the same; and Fig. 6 is a side elevation showing the ladder arranged for a high staging, parts being broken away.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in the difi'erent figures of the drawings.
.The object of my invention is to provide a simple extension-ladder, which may be employed as a step-ladder, as an extension-ladder, or as a support for staging.
My invention consists in a step-ladder connected with an auxiliary section by separable hinges, the auxiliary section being furnished with one or twoadditional sections, and in the combination with one of the sections of a short ladder, acting in conjunction with the section, to form a trestle for supporting a stage, as hereinafter more fully described.
The step-ladder A is formed of the usual series of steps, a, side pieces I), the brace B, pivoted to the ends of the side pieces, and the folding brace a, connecting one of the side pieces I) with one side of the brace B, to prevent the step-ladder from spreading when in use. To the rear of each side piece I), at the upper end thereof, is secured one half of a separable hinge, d, the other halves of the hinges being secured to the side pieces I) of the auxiliary ladder A, the halves of each hinge being connected by a rod, 6, common to both hinges.
The side pieces I) of the auxiliary ladder A are fitted over the sides of the narrower end of the auxiliary ladder A, and the upper end of the side pieces of the auxiliary ladder (No model.)
A and the lower end of the side pieces I) of the auxiliary ladder A are perforated transversely for receiving rods e e, which pass through thesidc pieces and connect the ladder A rigidly to the ladder A. An additional section similar to section A can be connected by rods 6 e in a similar way with the upper end of the section A.
To the side pieces I) of the auxiliary ladder A is attached a cord or chain, f, having in the middle thereofa screw, eye, or hook, g, to be inserted into the side of a building, as shown in Fig. 1, to assist insteadying and supporting the ladder.
The front edges of the side pieces I) of the ladder A are provided with long hooks h, which are inserted in eyes'vl, projecting from the side pieces b of the stepladder A when the ladder is extended.
The auxiliary ladder A is provided with eyesjon its side pieces for receiving hooks k, projecting from the ends of a short ladder, Z, and the ladderl is provided with a cord or chain, m, which is received in a hook, it, on the ladder A when it is desired to arrange the ladders l and A as a trestle, for sustaining the end of the auxiliary ladder A as a support for low staging, as shown in Fig. 3.
Instead of connecting the auxiliary ladder A with the step-ladder A by means of separable iron hinges d, I may make the auxiliary ladder A sufficiently wide to slip over the sides of the step-ladder and secure it by rods e, passing through holes formed in the side pieces of the step-ladder and auxiliary ladder, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
In Fig. 6 the ladder-sections A A are arranged for a high'staging, with the section A turned down and resting upon the section A, and the brace O of section A is centrally attached to the strip 0, held between two of the steps of the ladder.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a step-ladder, A,
' ofthe auxiliary ladder A, separable-hinges d,
the rod e, connecting the separable hinges, the long hooks h, connected with the auxiliary ladder A, and eyes 'i, projecting from the side pieces of the step-ladder A and adapted to receive the hooks h, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination,with the step-ladder A,
of the auxiliary ladder A, the separable hinges '5 d, the rod e, connecting the separable hinges,
the ladder-section A, having apertured side pieces, rods ee', the ladder Z, and the chain m,
substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with the step-ladder A and auxiliary ladder A, of the ladder-section 10 A, the short ladder I, connected with the ladder-section A by hooks and eyes, and the brace-cord m, substantially as herein shown and described.
