BOTTLE-CAPSULE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No 353,751, dated December 7,1886;

My invention relates to paper capsules to be employed for capsuling bottles; and it consists in the improved construction hereinafter eX- plained, whereby such capsules may be more securely applied than heretofore and their efficiency increased.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figures 1, 1-", 2, 3, and 4 show the component parts of a capsule separated and in place on a bottle. Figs. 1' and 2 show a modified form of the cap-piece to be used as that of Fig. 1 in conjunction with the strap, Fig. 3.
In forming my improved capsule I employ thin pliant paper, and first make therefrom a circular cap-piece, A or A, from the circumferential portion of which are removed a series of sections to leave at such circumferential portion a series of isolated fingers, f or f. In connection with this said cap-piecel also make, from thin pliant paper, a strap, B, which is of the configuration shown in Fig. 3, and is adapted to neatly envelop the neck a and head h of a bottle, as shown in Fig. 4.
In practice the cap A or A is placed upon the top of the bottle head or cork, and the isolated fingers f or f are bent down against the vertical sides of the head 71, as seen in Fig. 2, to which they are firmly secured by an adhesive substance. The strap B is then placed upon the neck and head of the bottle, so as to envelop the fingers f or f, as shown in Fig. 4, the strap being likewise firmly secured to the bottle neck and head by an adhesive substance applied throughout its inner face.
In some cases a disk, at, of tin-foil, Fig. 1, is interposed between the cap A and the cork, so as to form a guard for the latter against insects.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the fingers f are represented as of a converging form, while in Fig. 1 the fingersf are of a rectangular form.
The particular configuration of the fingers is unimportant, it being only essential that sections of the circumferential portion of the cap be removed to form isolated fingers, which can be bent down upon the bottle-head without overlapping, thus enabling the strap-piece to be firmly secured in position in a neat and smooth manner.
It will be understood that by forming the .cap and strap pieces of the capsule from a thin pliant paper the-said pieces may be readily pressed to conform to the head and neck of the bottle, and be so intimately secured to the bot tle that neither of them can be removed from the bottle intact, and not so as to be again applied without detection.
Another consideration lies in the fact that the cap and strap pieces of the capsule are separately applied and secured in position, so that a close fit of the capsule is obtained without recourse to the pressing and crimping incident to capsules which are first made up and afterward applied.
The isolated fingersf of the cap A, Figs. 1, 2, admit of the strap B being secured both to the fingers and to the exposed portions of the bott1e-head between said fingers, so that the strap is not only attached to the fingers, but also to the bottle-head between the same, and any torsional strain upon the strap tending to break its connection with the fingers is resisted by the additional attachment with the bottlehead between the fingers.
I claim- 1. The combination, with a bottle, of a cap adhesively secured on the top of the bottlehead, and consisting of a disk of thin pliant paper having sections removed from the circumferential portion thereof to form isolated fingers, which are bent down and adhesively secured to the sides of the bottle-head without overlapping, and a strap, likewise of thin pliant paper, enveloping the bottle-neck and vertical sides of the head to cover the cap-fingers and adhesively secured in position, substantially as set forth.
