Be it known that I. GOTTLTEB D. HUsE- MANN, of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adinstable Balconies, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists in an improved adjustable folding balcony,which is particularly designed for use in washing the outside of and which is light, compact, and strong in construction, and which can readily be secured in its operative position in any Window of any story, and asv readily removed and x5 folded away in a small space) for storage, or

adjusted in another window.

My invention will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 2Q Figure l is aperspective view from the inner side of the window, showing the balcony adjusted thereto in its operative position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view from the outer side of the window. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the adjustable balcony folded, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the shoes or metal end pieces of the side pieces of the platform, hereinafter described.

The same letters of reference indicate corrego sponding parts in all the figures.

Referring to the several parts by letter, A indicates the floor or platform of my adjustable folding window-balcony, which is secured upon and supported by the parallel rails or side pieces, B B, the inner ends of which are secured in the castings or shoes C C, the inner portions of these castings forming vertical sockets O O', for the reception of the lower ends of the uprights D D, which are rigidly 4o connected at their upper ends by the cross-- piece E; and the vertical sockets in the castings O are of such a shape that when the lower ends ofthe uprights D are placed therein it is impossible for the uprights to be forced back ont of a vertical line standingat right angles with the side pieces, B, as shown. When the balcony is removed from the window and it is desired to fold it together, the uprights D may be readily folded forward and down into the 5o position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings,their Serial No. 209,911. lower ends moving up iu the castings to permit of this folding together, and being prevented from coming out of the castings by the stops D', which engage with the lower inclined sides of the inclined braces C`l on the inner sides of the castings. l

The upper ends of the uprights are provided wilh the metal guide hands or loops F F, in which slide the adjustable arms G G, which are preferably of the same size as the 6o cross-piece E of the uprights, and have at their inner ends the loops G', which encircle the said crosspiece and slide thereon, the metal loops E and G securely holding the arms G in their operative positions, and at the same time vadmitting of their ready adjustment to suit t-he width of the windowin which the balcony is being secured.

To the inner side ofeach side piece, B B, is pivoted a series of stopsor dogs, I I, which 7o are pivotednear their centers, so that their lower ends will normally hang by their own weight below the level of the lower edges of the side pieces, B B, as clearly shown. so that when the balcony is secured in position in a window the lower end of one dog on each side piece will bear against the outer edge of the window-sill, and thus prevent the balcony from being accidentally pushed in the window, which would destroy the level of the platform 8o A, and most probably precipitate the occupant of the platform to the ground. By having the series of dogs arranged one behind the other, as shown, two of the dogs will be certain to automatically engage with the outer edge of the window-sill, no matter what the width of the latter may be.

For the purposes of safety, and also to shield the lower limbs of the occupant (when a Woman) from observation, the platform is pro- 9o. vided with the fence or guard K, consisting of the main portion K and the Wings K2 K2, the lower two thirds of these parts of the guard being preferably covered with canvas, as shown. The wings K2 are hinged at their rear edges to 95 the sides of the main part K of the guard by the hinges L, which, as shown, are fastened alternately at one end to the inner side of the edge of the wing and at the other end to the outer side of the side of the part K', and vice roo balcony together.

Kof the guard is hinged near its lower edge to the platform A by means of the double hinges M, which permit of one of the wings K2 fitting in between the said main part and the' upper surface of the platform when the part K is folded in and down in folding the balcony. The wings are secured in their open operative positions by the hooks N, engaging with the pins N', as shown. ,y

The lower edges of the inner portions of the side pieces, B B, which bear upon the window; sill, and the inner faces of the arms G, which bear against the window-frame, may be respectively provided with the rubber or other elastic cushions O, which prevent those parts y of the balcony frommarking the window sill or frame.

In placing the balcony in position in a window the uprights D are `raised into their vertical position, and the arms G adjusted so as to overlap sufficiently and rmly the inner sides of the window-frame, the inner portions of the side pieces,- B, resting upon the window-sill and the dogs I I bearing against the outer edge of the windowsill, no matter what the width of the latter may be, and it will thusV be seen that the balcony is securely locked in its operative position, without the possibility of slipping in any way, thus insuring perfect safety. The guard is unfolded into its open position, and the wings secured by the hooks N engaging with the' pins N', the lower ends of the side vpieces of the main part K of the guardextending down below the rear edge of the platform, and thus assisting in bracing the said part when unfolded. To fold the balcony together for storage or transportation Afrom place to place, the hooks N are freed from the l pins N', and one of the wings folded in against the inner side of the main part K', while the other wing is folded against the outer side of ,the said part, and the whole is then folded down on the platform. The frame, composed of the uprights and connecting cross-piece, is then folded down on the platform, the adj ust-- able arms being pushed in until their inner ends meet, and the frame when folded down The main part` ts around the folded guard, as shown in' Fig. 3, the balcony when folded in this manner being in a small compact shape, which occupies 6c y but little'space, and vcan be readily carried from one room to another, or from place to place.

By removingv theguard, and securing the balcony in a window with the uprights and adjustable arms on the outside of the'window` frameand the platform extending within the room, theplatform may be usedas a table for various purposes.
