MADISON VEDDER, OF NFVV YORK, .N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CATAMENIAL AND URINAL BANDAGES AND RECEPTACLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.` 35,338, dated May 20, 1862.
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern.- v y Be it known that I, MADISON VEDDER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bandage and Receptacle for Catamenia and Urine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whichi Figure l is a perspective view of the apparatus complete. Fig. 2 is a central longitudi- Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention consists, first, in the combination of a vessel made ot' soft vulcanized india-rubber, or other suitable `dexible soft and impervious material, of `suitable boat -like form to fit the body of a woman around the external orifice of the vagina, for the reception. of the catamenia, and a pouch or bagof similar material connected with the said vessel, for the reception of urine in traveling or under other circumstances in which it is diflicult to iind a suitable place or opportunity to urinate, the connection between the said menstrual vessel and urine4pouch being by a pipe so arranged as to allow the pouch to tit against the back part of the legin walking, or to be suspended over the edge of a seat in sitting down, and the pouch being tted with charged without removing the apparatus from the person, to which it is attachedby means ot a girdle round the waist and suit-able connections.
It also consists in certain means of providing for the ventilation o't the catalnenial retion from the portion ot' the body which it covers, and thereby keeping that portion of the body cool while the receptmzle is worn.
To enable others to construct my invention, l will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A is the boat-like vessel, oi' vulcanized india-rubber, which constitutes the catamenial receptacle and serves at the same time as a funnel to convey urine to the pouch or bag" B, which is connected with it by the small inward all round its mouth to form a good and smooth bearing-surface to it snugly in contact with the body without producing irritation, such flange serving also to confine a sponge within the said vessel, when it is desirable to use one therein, for the absorption of the catamenia, or to prevent the fluids in the said vessel from running out in the changes ot position of the body.
t' c' are holes provided in both sides of the vessel, in the upper part thereof, to permit the C C are exible pipes attached to theupper and lower extremities of the vessel A, to be attached by hooks and eyes c c to straps D and E, attached to the :front and back of the girdle F. The pipe C passes directly up the front otl the body and the pipe C directly backward between the thighs and thence `to the back. The said pipes, being open throughout, serve -as ventilators to the vessel A, besides serving asparts ot the connections with the girdle.
The urine-pouch B is connected with the vessel A, near the rear thereof and at the lowest part, the mouth or upper orifice of the connecting pipe or neck a extending across the whole width of the boat, or nearly so.
convex on the other to give it as great capacity possible without its occupying too much point there is attached a Iiexible pipe, G, which is used for discharging it, but which, except at the time ot discharging, passes round the`ryv back of the thigh and is attached by a hook and eye, d, to a strap, H, suspended from the side of the girdle F, which keeps its eX- tremity elevated to such a position that the urine cannot run or be shaken out. When a desirable opportunity of discharging the pouch occurs, the wea-rer stoops down a dunhooks the pipe G and turns its moutl downward close to the ground and the liquid runs out.
I I are tapes or straps attached to tliecorners of the pouch to Jas* found tie or fasten 1 theret. In traveling in a sit "ting posture these t'a'ps'br straps may be unfastened, and the pouch may be allowed to pipe a. This vessel A has a iiange, b, turned hang` down over the edge of the'seat.
circulation of air through it for ventilation. t
The said pouch is made concave on one side Y to :fit snugly against one of the thighs, andspace between the thighs, and at its lowest Vhat I claim s my invention, and desire ele and the girdle which attaches it to the "no secure by Letters Patent, isbody or any portion of such connections of l.
