Description

Oct. 6, 1970 P. H. BRAY'roN VERTICAL POSITIONER FOR GOLF BAG Filed March 13, 1969 United States Patent Oce 3,532,313 Patented Oct. 6, 1970 3,532,313 VERTICAL POSITIONER FOR GOLF BAG Peter H. Brayton, 1301 W. Agusta Ave., Phoenix, Ariz. 85021 Filed Mar. 13, 1969, Ser. No. 807,000 Int. Cl. A6311 55/04 U.S. Cl. 248--96 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A positioning and supporting device for holding a golf bag in vertical position comprising a frame demountably secured to the base of the bag and having downwardly extending vertical prongs adapted to be engaged in the ground when the bag is vertically dropped.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention pertains to accessories for sporting goods, and is particularly directed to a demountable attachment for the bottom end of a golf bag to hold the bag in vertical position when it is dropped vertically downward on the ground surface.
Heretofore, devices to vertically support a golf bag on the green or fairway were complicated, difiicult to install, and costly to manufacture and did not function satisfactorily to automatically position the bag when vertically dropped on the grass.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION One of the objects of this invention is to provide a support which will automatically position and hold the golf bag in convenient vertical position when the bag is vertically dropped to the ground.
Another object is to hold the golf bag in a true vertical and unimpeded and access position for the player when addressing the golf ball and when selecting the club to use.
Still another object is to provide demountable support for a golf bag which is easy and quick to put on and take off so the bag can be properly carried in an automobile without damage to the interior of the vehicle.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. l is a fragmentary elevational view showing the spiked rack attached to the base of the golf bag.
FIG. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the spiked rack shown in FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is an enlarged plan view of a modified form of the spiked rack.
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of FIG. 4.
FIG. 6 is an exploded perspective view showing the demountable attaching elements of the spiked rack.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT The invention comprises a rack indicated generally at 10 having a pair of horizontally disposed fingers 11 and 12 secured together at their midpoints by a suitable rivet 12. The outer ends of the fingers 11 have upturned portions 13, FIG. 6, in which are fixed the studs 14. Near the outer ends of the fingers 11 are fixed the downwardly projecting prongs 15 pointed at their lower ends 16 for easy projection into the ground surface 17.
Bag engaging clips 18 have an elongated slot 19` fitting over the stud 14 of each upturned portion 13 and a turned in upper portion 20 terminating in a downwardly projecting lip 21 engaging the ledge 22 of the base 23 of the golf bag 24. An elastic strap 25 has its upper end secured in a slot 26 formed in the upper portion 20` by a suitable fastening pin 27 and its lower end fastened by a button hole 28 over the stud 14 to normally yieldingly urge the lip 21 against the ledge 22 to secure the bottom 29 of base 23 of the bag 24 down against the top surfaces 30 of the fingers 11 to thus demountably secure the rack to the golf bag.
A modification to adapt the rack to fit a wide range of sizes of golf bags is shown in FIGS. 4 and 5, wherein a cross spider 31, comprising a fiat plate 31a having a plurality of horizontal guide arms 32 attached thereto which are provided with slotted guideways 33 to receive the horizontal portions 34 of the fingers 11, have clamping screws 35 to lock the fingers 11 in desired radial position to suit the contour of the base 23 of the bag 24 to which it is attached.
I claim:
1. A vertical positioner for a golf bag comprising in combination:
(A) a plurality of radially disposed lingers arranged to supportingly engage the bottom of the golf bag,
(B) upturned outer end portions on each of the fingers,
(C) a radially and horizontally disposed stud in each of the upturned portions,
(D) downwardly extending ground engaging prongs :fixed at the outer ends of the fingers,
(E) bag engaging clips having vertically disposed elongated slots fitting around the studs,
(F) turned in upper portions on the top of the clips each having a lip downwardly engaging a ledge on the bag.
(G) and an elastic tension strap connected between the clip and the upturned portions of the fingers to yieldingly engage the lips on the bag led-ge to demountably secure the positioner on the bag bottom.
2. A vertical bag positioner as in claim 1 wherein the fingers are radially adjustable relative to each other and clamp means are provided to secure the fingers in desired radial position to accommodate the positioner to various sized golf bags.
