FENCE POST SETTING TOO-L.
No. 353,209. Patented Nov. 23, 1886.

WITNESSES:
N. m'znsw mum hagnphnr. Washington. a c n UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH DU BOIS, OF WAVERLY, NEW YORK.
FENCE-POST-SETTING TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,209, dated November 23, 1886.
Application filed April 17, 1886.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH DU BOIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waverly, in the county of Tioga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Post-Setting Tools; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in tools for setting fence or other posts in the ground, and its object is to provide a cheap, convenient, portable device for making postholes.
It consists in a metallic tube of any suitable or convenient length, (usually about-three feet,) and of any diameter required made in the form of a hollow cylinder, or it may be made to taper toward its lower end in form like the frustum of an inverted code, the
I point or apex being solid and cone-shaped.
WVithin this tube is driven or tightly fitted a core, consisting of a piece of hard wood resting upon the bottom and extending to within about eight inches of the top. A rammer is provided consisting of a piece of tough wood nearly corresponding in diameter with the top of the tube, so that it will easily slip within it, and about one foot in length, fitted at its ends with iron bands to prevent splitting. A heavy metallic cap may, however, be used in place of the rammer when desirable, but for ordinary purposes the wooden rammeris sufficient. A strong bail is attached and secured. to the tube near its top for the purpose of enabling it to be easily withdrawn from the ground.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my device. Fig. 2 is a vertical sec tion. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the rammer. Fig. 4 represents a modification. of the rammer, consisting of an iron cap.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, A is the metallic tube; B, its interior core; 0, the rammer, and D the bail. As before stated, this tube may be made with vertical sides or tapering, as shown. Ordinarily I prefer to Serial No. 199,166. (No model.)
make the tube cylindrical in shape, with vertical sides, as it can be cheaply constructed of ordinary iron pipe; but for loose or sandy soil the tapering form is preferable, as it will more firmly pack the soil around the sides of the hole or opening.
When desired to operate my device, I insert the rammer G in the top of the tube upon the core, its end projecting a few inches above the tube. 1 then place the tube in a vertical position upon the ground where the hole is desired, and force it downward to the required depth, by blows of a heavy maul upon the top of the rammer. \Vhen driven to a sufficient depth, the rammer is removed, the bail turned to a vertical position, and the tube withdrawn from the ground by means of a lever inserted through the bail, leaving a hole for the insertion of the stake or post. In case the rammer is used up or worn out it may be easily and readily replaced by another, and in stifi", clayey, or hard soil the metallic cap may be substituted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A fence-post-setting tool consisting of the metallic tube provided with the solid conical point and interior core, in combination with the removable rammer adapted to fit within the top of the tube and rest upon the core, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, in a fence-post-setting tool, of the metallic tube provided with the conical point and interior core, and adapted to receive a rammer, and the bail, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a fence-post-setting tool, the combination of the metallic tube provided with the solid conical point and interior core, in combination with the removable rammer, consisting of an iron cap adapted to fit within the JOSEPH DU BOIS.
\Vitnesses:
J. B. FLOYD, E. A. DEMOREST.
