Cl. 40-140 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An ornamental article of jewelry comprising a first member having slot means therein for receiving ornamental pieces in the form of initials or decorative design, which pieces form a friction fit with the first member, and locking means for securing the pieces in the slot means, and a second member to which the first member is secured.

The present invention relates ornamental articles of jewelry such as tie pins, or tie clasps, rings, cuff links, tie tacks, brooches, and other similar ornamental articles of jewelry, in which individual ornamental pieces in the form of initials or designs or the like, are arranged to form a decorative assembly, such as monogram.

It is an object of the invention to provide an ornamental article of the general type already referred to which can be made in a relatively inexpensive manner and which articles can be mass produced so as to provide different types of articles, such as a tie clasp, or a ring, or a tie tack, or a cuff link, with very minute changes in the structure.

It is yet another object of the present invention to provide an ornamental article having a plurality of individual, separately made letter units secured in a custom designed relationship, such as in the form of initials, in order to provide the specific initials of a party wearing the article.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a highly decorative monogram assembly for securing the individual ornamental units in an assembled position, and to prevent them from being accidentally detached.

It is still a further object of the present invention to provide an ornamental article that can be easily opened and the monograms or the individual initials rearranged in any fashion as desired.

Still another object of the present invention is to provide an ornamental article in which a front member and a rear member are provided, and in which the front member is provided with slot means therein for receiving a plurality of initials in a friction fit and with locking means for securing the initials within the slot means once they are positioned in a predetermined order or arrangement.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a front member with slot means for receiving a plurality of individual ornamental letters therein, and with a slot closing screw means, which also serve to hold the front memher to the rear member.

Another object of the present invention lies in the construction of the ornamental character elements provided which character elements are provided with a substantially I-construction, which is adapted to slidably fit within a slot means of the device, so as to frictionally maintain the character elements within their proper position.

Various other objects and advantages of the present invention will be more readily apparent from the following detailed description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, and in which:

FIG. 16 is a view similar to FIG. 15, but illustrating the tie tack as it is seen from the side, after it has been attached to a tie.

Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral 10 generally designates an ornamental article of jewelry in the form of a tie clasp. The tie clasp is provided with a front member or front bar 12 and a rear bar 14. The front bar 12 and the rear bar 14 may be made of any economical material and may 'be plated with brass or other decorative materials, and these two pieces or bars are connected to each other by a loop 16. The front bar 12 is provided with an elongated slot 18 which extends from a point adjacent the loop 16, and completely to the opposite end of the bar 12. The rear bar 14 is provided with an arcuate portion 20 which is resilient so that the arcuate portion 20 bears against the rear surface of front bar 12 so as to easily engage a tie and a shirt therebetween in order to clamp the tie clasp to the shirt and the tie to hold it in place. The front bar 12 is provided with a threaded aperture 22 therein, adjacent its open end, and contiguous to the slot 18.

The slot 18 is adapted to receive therein a plurality of individual ornamental pieces in the form of initials 24. The initials 24 comprise a letter of the alphabet, in this case D, which is secured by any suitable means to an I-shaped configuration or member 26. The I-shaped member 26, as best seen in FIG. 3, is adapted to slide within the slot 18 so as to frictionally engage the surface of the slot 18. so that the initial can be properly disposed or positioned within the slot 1 8 at any desired point therein, such as the position shown in FIG. 2. It will be noted that the I configuration causes the rear portion 28 of the I, as best seen in FIG. 3, to stay disposed within the slot 18 once it has been positioned there by hand.

After a desired number of initials, such as the initials DOE have been positioned within the slot 18 of the tie clasp, as best seen in FIG. 2, a threaded screw 30 is engaged in the threaded aperture 22, so as to secure and lock the initials in place so that they will not accidentally or inadvertently come out of the slot.

Thus, this embodiment of the invention provides an easily manufactured and ornamental tie clasp.

Referring to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in FIGS. 4 to 6, there is shown therein another tie clasp embodying the present invention, substantially similar to the invention described in connection with FIGS. 1 to 3, except that the front piece or the front bar 34 is thinner than the front bar of the embodiment described in FIG. 1, and except that the rear bar 36 is detachably connected to the front bar 34. It will be noted that in this embodiment of the invention, the initials 24 are identical to the initials in connection with the invention illustrated in FIG. 1, and have the I-shape so as to fit into the slot 38 of the front bar 34. However, the rear bar 36 is provided with a pin 40, having a head 42 thereon, adapted to receive the forked end 44 of the front bar 34 so as to secure the forked end 44 to the rear bar 36. The other end of the front bar 34 is secured to the rear bar 36 by means of a headed screw 46 which extends through an aperture 48 in the front bar 34 and is threadedly engaged in a bore 48' in the rear bar 36. A resilient clamp member 50, as best seen in FIG. 6, presses against the rear bar 36 so as to form the clamping member of the tie clasp.

Referring to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in FIGS. 7 and 8, this embodiment of the invention is substantially the same as that described in connection with FIG. 1, and in connection with FIG. 4, except that this ornamental article is in the form of a ring. The ring 54 is provided with a fiat front face 56 having an apertture therein for receiving a threaded screw member 58 therethrough to secure the threaded screw member 58 to the fiat face of the ring by a knurled nut 60.

The screw member 58 is secured to the rear of a slotted bar 62 similar to the bar 12 described in connection with the embodiment of the invention shown in FIG. 1. This bar 62 is provided with a slot 64 for receiving a plurality of the initials of the I-shaped configuration into the slot 64. The end of the slot is also provided with a threaded bore for receiving a threaded screw member 66, similar to the screw member 30 described in connection with FIG. 1, in order to lock the initials 24 therein, after they have been properly positioned in the slot 64. Thus, instead of having a rear clamping member, as described in connection with FIG. 1, a ring member 54 may be substituted therefor so that the ornamental article now becomes a ring.

Referring to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in FIGS. 9 and 10, this is substantially the same as that described in connection with FIG. 1, except that the ornamental article is in the form of a brooch, or a tie pin. In this embodiment of the invention, a front bar member 68 is provided having the slot 70 therein for receiving the initials of I-configuration indicated as 24. The slot 70 is further provided with the threaded bore 72 for receiving a stickpin 74 therethrough. After the initials 24 are frictionally engaged in the slot 70, the end of the pin 74 is passed through the bore 72 and a nut 76 is disposed on the end of the threaded pin 74 for securing and locking the initials 24 in place on the slot.

Referring to FIG. 10, it will be noted that the brooch is extended through a piece of cloth or material and has its pointed end secured in a hook 78 on the rear side of the bar 68.

Referring to the embodiment of the invention shown in FIGS. 11 to 13, the ornamental article is in the form of a cuff link, and the slotter bar 80 is provided with a a slit 82 for receiving the initials 24 therein. The bar 80 has a threaded bore 84 adapted to receive a headed screw 86 therein. The threaded screw 86 is adapted to be received in a threaded aperture in one end of a rear bar 88 forming the rear of the cuff link. The bar 88 is tubular and has hooked ends 90 and the bar 88 is extended through the openings in the shirt and disposed in a 4 parallel position to the edges of the cuff, indicated at in FIG. 13.

The rear member shown in FIG. 12, and indicated as 92, is identical to the rear bar 88 illustrated in the exploded view of FIG. 11, except that it is wider and flatter and not in a tubular form.

Referring to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in FIGS. 14 to 16, this is substantially the same as that described in connection with the embodiment of the invention shown and described in FIG. 1, and in the other figures of the drawings, except that this ornamental article is in the form of a tie tack or a tie pin. The tie tack is provided with a front slotted bar 94 with a slot 96 extending through one end thereof, and with a threaded screw 98 adapted to be threaded into the bore 100 to lock and secure the initials 24 in the slot 96 after they have been properly positioned therein. The rear of the bar 94 is provided with a threaded member or screw 102 adapted to be threaded into the conical tack 104 which is disposed in the rear of the tie 106, best seen in FIGS. 15 and 16. It will be noted that the threaded member or pin 102 is pointed at 103 so as to be easily pushed through the fabric 106.

From the foregoing description, it is apparent that the present invention provides an ornamental article having a slotted member for securing therein a plurality of individual initials, such as a monogram and the like therein, and other locking means for properly securing the initials after they have been once inserted into the slot, so as to prevent them from inadvertently and accidentally becoming disengaged therefrom.

It is also apparent that the present invention provides a novel ornamental article that can be easily manufactured and which can be utilized as a tie clasp formed of a single piece or a tie clasp formed of more than one piece, or as an ornamental ring, or as a brooch, or as a cuff link, or as a tie tack, or in other desired manners.

Inasmuch as other changes may be made in the form, arrangement and relative location of the several parts without departing from the present invention, it is not meant to limit the scope of the invention except by the following claims.

What is claimed is:

1. An ornamental device comprising an elongated carrier bar with slot means, indicia means for insertion into said slot means, and locking means for securing said indicia means in said slot means, wherein said slot means comprises an elongated slot extending centrally of said bar, and wherein said slot is coextensive with one end of said bar and forms an opening therein for insertion of said indicia means therein, wherein said indicia means comprises an indicia including an I-shaped cross section which forms a friction fit when inserted into said slot, and wherein said locking means includes bore means adjacent said opening and screw means detachably connected to said bore means.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein said device is a tie clasp and includes a second bar disposed rearwardly of said carrier bar and forms a clamping means therewith.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein said device includes a threaded conical tack and said carrier bar includes a threaded member adapted to engage said conical tack.

4. The device of claim 1 wherein said device includes a ring with a fiat face, and said carrier bar has a threaded member for detachable connection to said fiat face.

5. An ornamental device comprising a tie clasp with a front slotted bar having an open end, a rear bar, a resilient clamp bearing against said rear bar, pin means on said rear bar for insertion into the open end of said slot, bore means in one end of said front and rear bars, threaded means engaging said bore means for connecting said front and rear bars together, and indicia means frictionally engaged in said slotted bar and having an I-shaped configuration.

6. The device of claim 8 wherein said front bar is relatively thin and said rear bar is substantially thicker than said front bar.

7. An ornamental device comprising a brooch with a substantially fiat slotted front bar having an open end, indicia with an I-shaped configuration adapted to be inserted into said slot to form a frictional fit therein, a pin with threaded means, nut means adapted to engage said pin threaded means, and bore means adjacent said open end for receiving said pin therethrough to secure said indicia within said slot.

8. An ornamental device comprising a cuff link with a slotted bar having an open end, a rear bar with an open side and hooked ends, indicia with an I-shaped configuration insertable into said slotted bar, and locking means threadably engaged into openings in said slotted bar and for securing said indicia in said slotted bar.
